KIU suffers defeat at home

Must read

KIU 1:2 Makerere University

The ‘great Makerere’ yesterday reaffirmed its sporting worth with a 2-1 win over resilient Kampala International University (KIU), during a well-attended match played at Ggogonya Grounds in Nsambya.
Both teams came for the game well prepared and played to a goalless first half, before a tricky Simon Kazibwe gave the visitors the lead on the sixth minute of the second half, with the KIU back line caught flat-footed.
But eight minutes to the end, a resolute KIU had Umar Kagere connecting with Ibrahim Kazindura in the Makerere box, forcing a defender to handle the ball. A penalty was awarded and kazindura converted it to level the score.
However, the KIU joy was short lived four minutes later when Dan Kasoma sealed the game with a fine goal, and minutes later the host’s coach Eduardo Kajoba expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance.
“We tried our best but our tactics were not fully utilised due to lack of team work but were going to go back and train on our mistakes especially fitness and team work,” Kajoba said.
However, his captain Jeff Akabwai was optimistic their performance would improve.
“It is a game of football and we have lost but we are a focused and confident that we shall put up a spirited fight in Makerere for the return leg,” Akabway told The Eagle Online.
Delighted Makerere assistant Captain Simon Kazibwe, who was crowned ‘man of the match’ said the team’s mission was to win the away tie.
“Our mission was to win an away game and the rest is history at home. We are proud and safe to have beaten KIU because we had a bad record against them,” Kazibwe said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ndejje University beat Nkumba University 2-1 in Luweero.
Meanwhile, the 1st leg of the UFL will resume next week with defending champions MUBS battling Banda-based Kyambogo University, a match that is expected to attract the biggest crowd due to their teams’ rivalry and history.
