Farouk Miya, a Uganda national team hero of the current Cranes generation, finally made his Belgian Premier League debut for Standard Leige.
Miya came on the 46th minute for Darwin Andrade with the Leige already trailing, and by crunch time the team suffered a 4-0 defeat at Mechelen.
“Obviously, it’s unbelievable to make my debut here,” Miya told EagleOnline on Monday morning, adding: “It’s something I’ve looked forward to for a while now. But the circumstances weren’t the best. It’s disappointing, lost the three points. We’re going to have to come back and get those points back.”
Miya was sold to Standard Leige last January for a fee of about Shs1.3 billion (US$400,000) after helping local side Vipers SC win the Uganda Premier League. He also had a sparkling run for the Uganda Cranes during qualification for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda, where he scored a penalty and made an assist in a 2-2 draw with Mali in Uganda’s opening match at the finals.
Miya is expected to be part of the Uganda Cranes squad to be announced on Wednesday ahead of this month’s double header against Burkina Faso in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers.
