President Museveni has today commissioned a fleet of multi-billion road construction equipment at Bbuto-Bweyogerere, Wakiso District.
Over 1,000 units were bought from Japan and each district will get a motor grader, wheel-loader, vibrio roller, water bowser and two dump trucks, all valued at Shs 2.7 billion.
The equipment was purchased through a loan acquired from the Japan Bank for International Development Cooperation, in a bid to construct feeder roads in different areas of the county that will link farmers to markets.
“No more road tenders at district level,” Museveni said upon commissioning the equipment, adding that each district should be able to plan and work on their road network, including expansion.
He also advised the Ministry of Works and Transport to establish a central workshop, where the machines can be overhauled, and also to explore ways of assembling similar machines in Uganda.
“In the past, we had a few and fragmented road equipment, inadequate for the whole country,” Mr Museveni said and cautioned district leaders to put them to proper use because “they have a ‘GPSR system that will help in locating them in case of theft.”
