The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has sealed off stores and seized confectioneries that include sweets and chocolates from Luck Star Business Link located in Ntinda industrial Area.
According to a statement by the standards’ agency, the products in store were found with conflicting and tampered-with expiry dates.
“Locally printed stickers that were being used to re-label the products were also recovered from the stores,” the statement reads in part. The products seized include ‘magnetic eggs’, ‘duo de le’, ‘lollipop and choco’ and milk.
‘UNBS officials seized the products in question as they are suspected to be expired and substandard,’ the statement indicates, adding that further investigations into the case were ongoing.
In late July UNBS has destroyed goods worth Shs900 million at Luweero Industries in Nakasongola. The destruction of goods followed countrywide seizures carried out the agency’s market surveillance team and Uganda Police Force.
UNBS is the custodian of national standards and quality. The agency develops and promotes as well as enforcing the standards.
In mid-June UNBS also destroyed substandard goods worth Shs50 million from Mbale and these included extension cables, solar panels, primary batteries, percolators, sockets and compact fluorescents.
