Opposition MPs storm out in protest

Must read

There was drama in Parliament this afternoon when opposition MPs stormed out of the house during the presentation of the minority report by the legal and parliamentary affairs committee, only to return some minutes later, just in time for Kumi Woman MP Monica Amoding to present the ‘Minority Report’ of the legal and parliamentary affairs committee.

Earlier in the afternoon, the opposition had accused Speaker Rebecca Kadaga of bias after suspending six opposition MPs, who were reportedly ‘misbehaving’ during the morning session. Those suspended included Ssemujju Nganda, Allan Ssewanyana, Gerald Karuhanga, Mubarak Munyangwa, Anthony Akol and Jonathan Odur.

Speaking to journalists after her colleagues stormed out this afternoon, the Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza said Kadaga had continued conducting parliamentary business in respect to the age limit bill, even when the matter is before the court.

“It is unfortunate that the article is being entrenched to support a one man rule and that’s President Museveni,” Ms. Kiiza, who also doubles as Kasese woman MP, said.

She was supported by Manjiya MP John Baptist Nambeshe, who said Kadaga had failed in her role as the custodian of parliamentary business.

“The Speaker has deliberately violated the rules of procedure just to justify Museveni’s interests,” Nambeshe said.

Thereafter the walked back into chambers and Kumi woman MP Monica Amoding presented the minority report which criticizes age limit bill that is fronted by the Igara west MP Raphael Magyezi supported by the majority legislators (NRM MPs)
