Kampala-Former Vice President Professor Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya has failed to turn up for the reconciliation meeting that was scheduled for later today as Mr Mbabazi attends.
According to Capt Mike Mukula, the National Resistance Movement Vice Chairman for Eastern Region, Bukenya has instead opted to attend the Democratic Party (DP) Delegates Conference taking place at his hotel, the Katomi Kingdom Hotel along Entebbe Road.
The former Vice President and former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi have declared their intentions to contest for the presidency against party Chairman Yoweri Museveni, throwing a spanner in the works, something that has rubbed their parent party, the NRM, the wrong way. This has prompted the NRM to call the two for ‘reconciliation’ talks as a means of exploring the best way forward, in respect of party cohesion.
However, by the time of filing, it was not possible to get a comment from Bukenya but Mukula said Mbabazi was on his way to State House, Entebbe to attend the meeting.
But speaking to Eagleonline last week, Prof Bukenya said he would not attend the scheduled meeting, saying he ‘was above summons’.
“I am not going there and I have same story like Mbabazi. Why waste my time because I don’t know that committee” Bukenya said in an exclusive interview last week. He added: “If they want me, they can come and meet me here at my residence rather than them summoning me, I am above that kind of intimidation.”
Meanwhile, the NRM ‘reconciliation team’ is comprised of Dr Ruhakana Rugunda (chairperson) Major General Matayo Kyaligonza, Hajj Abdul Nadduli and Capt Mukula, all members of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), the highest decision-making organ of the party.
