KCCA ‘fetching’ 11th Uganda league title from Wankulukuku

Must read

The Azam Uganda Premier League (UPL) could have new champions by the end of today.

Eight fixtures are lined up on the day, with fixtures involving the top two sides enough to decide the destiny of the title.

Eyes will be firmly fixed in Buikwe, where Vipers host URA, and at Wankulukuku, where KCCA travel for their clash against Express.

The odds are so much staked in manager Mike Mutebi’s KCCA that his side could lose to the Red Eagles and still win the title, their 11th, for as long as their defeat at Wankulukuku is corresponded with Vipers’ at the hands of URA.

KCCA come into Tuesday’s tie topping the log on 55 points, four ahead of Vipers with two matches to go.

The only way KCCA’s title celebrations can be postponed to the final day of the season is by dropping points and Vipers beating Kefa Kisala’s URA in Buikwe.

Vipers coach George Nsimbe seems low on confidence that KCCA will falter but believes they have enough to upstage URA.

“I have never lost a game to URA in my coaching career,” Nsimbe assured on the club website, “I think winning this game is very important for the fans in Buikwe as well.”

Vipers have, however, won just three of the 21 encounters against URA in all competitions.

URA themselves, sixth on 43 points, long gave up on the title chase and will be playing just to finish further up the log.

Vipers have had an on and off campaign, winning 14 out of 28 matches, two fewer than KCCA’s. Both sides have lost five matches apiece.

KCCA have not won at Wankulukuku in recent years, but that they have drawn there since the 2011/12 season will give them confidence as a point could land them the title.

Express are third on 49 points and their coach, Wasswa Bbosa, says they plan to postpone KCCA’s title celebrations. “Our duty is to win our remaining two matches and finish as high as possible,” he said.
