Kenyan soldiers are poised to rejoin the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) after President Uhuru Kenyatta and the new UN Secretary General Antonio Gueterres agreed to reset relations.
The two leaders agreed to the new terms during a meeting held on the sidelines of the ongoing 28th AU Summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
Strained relations between Kenya and the UN developed late last year following an attack on the world body’s installations in South Sudan that led to the sacking of the UNMISS Contingent Commander Kenyan Lt. Gen. Johnson Kimani Mogoa Ondieki by former Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. Following Mr Ban’s decision, President Kenyatta in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, ordered for the withdrawal of the Kenyan contingent.
Meanwhile, Guinea’s President Alpha Conde has been named the new chairperson of the African Union.
