Parliament has today paid tribute to the late Dr. Margaret Mungherera, a consultant psychiatry at Mulago Hospital who succumbed to cancer recently.
This followed a motion moved by the Prime Minister, Rukahana Rugunda requesting for the tribute.
However, the tribute ended up into a renewed demand for the radiotherapy machine also known as the cancer machine.
“The only tribute we can pay to Dr. Mungherera is by paying attention to the cancer institute,” Kiira Municipality MP, Semujju Nganda submitted.
He further added, “The cancer bunker is still not operating yet we allocated money for it.”
The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga reiterated Semujju’s demands. “We got money from the consolidated fund to pay for the cancer machine, where is that Machine?” she requested.
Responding to the demands, the Minister of Health informed the house that the machine will start functioning in May.
Mulago’s only radiotherapy machine broke down in April last year (2016), leaving the lives of over 2,000 patients at stake. Dr. Mungherera, the first female and first Ugandan to head the world Medical Association died early this month in India where she had gone for medical treatment.
At the age of 59, she succumbing to cancer it the abdomen, according to Rugunda.
She held a bachelor of Surgery degree from Makerere University and a Masters in psychiatry from UK. Meanwhile, the House also adopted the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on the Auditor General’s report on the health sector.
