Ever since Betty Nambooze announced her own faction of DP, called the ‘Bad DP’, one of the people who have always been by her side is musician Ronald Mayinja.
Mayinja, who has for a very long time been seen as anti-government, is known for his conscious music that preaches against bad governance, corruption and uplifting of the poor. Among such songs is his hits like; Africa, Bunkenke, Ssente Y’ekibi and Tuwalana Nguzi.
However, he says that despite singing various songs against bad governance, little has changed thus the need to change tactics.
“I am not a politician per say but as musicians, we too have a lot of problems but I have come realise they can’t be solved through music alone. I have recorded a lot of songs highlighting the problems of the poor, against corruption and bad governance but this hasn’t solved anything,” he said while appearing on NBS.
According to Mayinja, this is what compelled him to join mainstream politics so he can be directly involved in the formulation of policies.
Mayinja is a member of Nambooze’s faction that has come to be known as ‘Bad DP’.
Mayinja is not the first entertainer to join politics. Lubaga South MP, Kato Lubwama also joined Parliament on the ticket of ‘Truth and Justice’, a breakaway faction of DP headed by Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.
Other entertainers who joined mainstream politics include Judith Babirye and Peter Ssematimba
