Must read

Uganda will host the four-day African Insurance Organisation (AIO) conference at the Commonwealth Speke Resort at Munyonyo from May 21-24.

To be held under the theme: ‘Furthering the financial inclusion agenda of African nations through insurance, the conference will bring together over 800 insurance practitioners from all over the continent.

Speaking ahead of the conference, the Chairman AIO Local Organizing Committee Alhaj Ibrahim Kaddunabbi Lubega said the issues to be discussed will drive the uptake of insurance services for both the ordinary Ugandans and the continent.

“Sustainable financial inclusion is only possible with an effective risk management mechanism in place. In the absence of such a mechanism, those included are bound to fall back to the excluded. This conference will therefore provide a platform for the entire continent to discuss insurance, our challenges as well as opportunities for growth. The core of the discussion will be strategizing on and agreeing on plans to ensure the improvement of lives through the products and services that we provide at affordable prices, through appropriate channels that are relevant to our markets,” Kaddunabi said.

The conference is therefore aimed at facilitating the sharing of knowledge and best practice among insurance business leaders and professionals; provide a forum for insures to contribute to the policy debates and issues driving the sector’s growth within the region.

“We expect that His Excellency the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will officially open the conference in the spirit of Pan Africanism and in a show of support that the government has for the industry. We will therefore use the opportunity to show case our developments as well as to dialogue on how governments can partner with our industries to ensure that the general public can continue benefiting from insurance, “added Mr. Deepak Pandey, Chairman of Uganda Insurers Association.

In addition to the above, the conference will also tackle issues to do with achieving sustainable agriculture insurance, developing effective consumer education approaches, accelerating financial inclusion through regulation and driving insurance penetration by developing affordable, need-based products and building appropriate delivery systems.

This will be the second time that Uganda is hosting this continental conference, the first time being in 1998.
