The Kalungu West Member of Parliament Joseph Sewungu has called for a revision of the Electoral Commission Act, to strip President Yoweri Museveni of the powers to appoint the EC commissioners.
Sewungu said the EC is wrought by incompetence, citing the over 100 petitions filed in high courts that he said, are as a result of returning officers’ mistakes including wrong tallying of the results, smuggling in of declaration forms and the avoidance of announcing the real winners of the election.
“People must apply for the various posts in the Electoral Commission body and later be approved by the Parliament not head picking as it is done,” MP Sewungu said, noting that the government has lost over one billion shillings in conducting the various by elections in the country which resulted from EC’s failure to observe electoral laws among others.
‘’I must initiate the resignation or firing of Kalungu district returning Jacqueline Muhindo who smuggled in already tallied results and declared NRM’s candidate Richard Kyabagu,” Sewungu said during a press conference held at Democratic Party headquarters at City House in Kampala.
He said the Court of Appeal had directed the EC to conduct fresh elections.
By press time EC spokesperson Jotham Taremwa could not be reached for comment.
