GULU-The Acholi Paramount chief, David Onen Acana the II has warned members of the public in Acholi to stop engaging in domestic violence as the New Year begins.
His Highness made this remark while delivering his new year message from the Acholi cultural headquarter in Gulu town.
He said domestic violence is still highly prevailing in Acholi among both women and men resulting from poverty, lack of respect, and denial of property rights among others.
He urged that as the people usher in to the New Year they should stop domestic violence which is leading to high family breakdown and contributing to high levels of child neglect to day.
However, reports say many issues have caused women to continually come second place after men , one of the reason hurting women is domestic violence .this is according to research by the United Nation sustainable Development goal program in address to domestic Violence .
More than 1 in 15 women aged between 15 – 49 which is approximately 22 per cent report that they have experienced violence at some point in time as compared with only 1 in 10 (8 per cent) of men cases reported .
The vice has been higher in rural areas than in Urban with highest reported cases for women in Bukedi Region with 39.8 per cent and 12.5 per cent for men in south Central Regions of Uganda.
