Former Security Minister Gen. Henry Tumukunde has been cleared for nomination as presidential candidates after the Electoral Commission verified the signatures of supporters who endorsed his candidature.
Tumukunde joins the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and independent candidates Nancy Linda Nakalembe and Fred Mwesigye who were cleared for nominations.
The Electoral Commission gazetted November 2nd and 3rd as the nomination dates for presidential candidates.
According to spokesperson of the electoral commission, Paul Bukenya, they are verifying signatures of National Unity Platform (NUP)’s presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine, the Alliance for National Transformation’s (ANT) Gen. Mugisha Muntu among other aspirants.
“Nominations will be conducted in accordance with the measures and guidelines put in place by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Electoral Commission to prevent and combat person-to-person, person-to-object and object-to-person spread of the COVID-19,” the chairperson of the electoral body Justice Simon Byabakama said last week.
Ahead of the 2021 elections, candidates will be allowed to organize or hold campaign meetings, in a regulated manner, preferably outdoors, with limited attendance of a maximum of seventy (70) persons, to enable the observance of the two meters social distancing rule for the persons attending the meeting.
