Over 64 cases to be disposed of in a Criminal Appeal Session

Must read

The Court of Appeal has started a Criminal Appeals session in Kampala where 64 cases will be handled in a month. The Deputy Chief Justice, Richard Buteera, is leading a team of seven Justices in the session.

Justice Buteera, alongside Justices: Geoffrey Kiryabwire, Catherine Bamugemereire and Remmy Kasule, will handle 40 criminal Appeals, whereas Justices: Kenneth Kakuru, Stephen Musota and Christopher Madrama will handle 24 criminal applications.

The DCJ said his participation is in line with his earlier promise to take part in the sessions as an onerous effort to deal with the case backlog and bring hope to the court users.

Court of Appeal’s Deputy Registrar, Ayebare Tumwebaze, says the new session, and many more to come before the end of the year, are part of the Court’s backlog management strategy aimed at improving Justice Service delivery.

“We have actually planned a series of activities before the end of the year,” says Mr. Tumwebaze.

“Following this session, we shall open another Criminal Session in Fort Portal by Justices: Kakuru, Madrama and Irene Mulyagonja to deal with another 40 Criminal Appeals. Also, Justices Elizabeth Musoke, Hellen Obura and Remmy K. Kasule will be heading to Lira for another session of 40 cases, just before the Christmas break.”

Besides, Justices Bamugemereire, Musota and Muzamiru Kibeedi will handle a Civil Session of 40 appeals in December 2020.

The deputy registrar who could not hide his excitement over the “exceptional performance” by the Court of appeal, said, “All judgments and rulings are expected before January 2021,” says Mr. Ayebare. He added that Court had already completed 1,256 cases between January and October 2020.
