Former Security Minister Gen. Henry Tumukunde has become the second candidate to be nominated to contest in next year’s presidential elections.
Escorted by two police patrol vehicles, Tumukunde arrived at the Kyambogo Sports Ground for his nomination in the company of his seconders after a brief standoff with police as several of his supporters gathered near Nakawa Market before they were dispersed by teargas.
The Chairman of his campaign team Omar Kalinge Nyago, and former East African Community Deputy Secretary General Beatrice Kiraso who is his chief of staff among others, presented the credentials at 12:35pm to the Electoral Commission. He was also accompanied by his wife Stella Tumukunde.
According to the commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, the documents submitted by Tumukunde had a slight anomaly which were later corrected by 2pm.
“I, Justice Simon Byabakama, declare Henry Tumukunde Kakurugu, a duly nominated presidential candidate for the 2021 general election having fulfilled the needed requirements,” Justice Simon Byabakama said.
Tumukunde’s campaign is themed on ‘Kisoboka’ meaning it’s possible and he chose the clock as his symbol.
While addressing the nation after nomination, Tumukunde said, “I’ve just received the symbol of the ‘clock’. I chose it deliberately because the time has come and the time is now.”
“I have a belief that we shall have fair competitions with all aspirants in the general election therefore Uganda Electoral Commission should ensure Uganda achieves a free and fair election,” he added.
