Government has lifted the ban on licensed labour exporting companies and allowed them to resume business after further relaxation of more Covid-19 lockdown restrictions by the Ministry of Health. This is to allow Ugandans seek jobs abroad.
The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Frank Tumwebaze confirmed the development saying the ban has been lifted following the relaxing of a number of Covid-19 lockdown measures.
“This is to inform all licenced companies involved in the sourcing of external employment for Ugandan migrant workers, that following the relaxing of a number of COVID-19 lockdown measures by Ministry of Health and resumption of air travel, Ministry of Gneder, Labpour and Social Development will be lifting the ban on labour export by licenced companies in accordance with the existing mandatory COVID SOPs for all travelers,” Tumwebaze said.
He further noted that the Gender ministry will issue guidelines in a detailed statement.
“The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development will issue a detailed statement on this. I thank the sector stakeholders Uganda Association of External Recruitment Agencies (UAERA) for their patience,” he added.
Exportation of labour was suspended by the government in March this year as a means to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The industry is highly lucrative with companies minting millions of shillings from exporting workers to especially the Middle East.
