Uganda Cranes are looking to secure their spot in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations when they finish their Group B campaign away to Malawi on Monday evening.
The Cranes are second behind already-qualified Burkina Faso, while Malawi occupy third spot, one point behind Uganda ahead of this key encounter.
Uganda just need to avoid defeat against the Malawi Flames to reach the third consecutive Afcon finals while the hosts need nothing else but a win to qualify for the third time in their history, having previously competed in the finals in both 1984 and 2010.
“We now know that job must be completed in Malawi. Even before this game, we know that no matter the outcome, we had to secure a good result away in Malawi. Therefore, we shall use the time between now and Monday to polish up,” Abdallah Mubiru said after the goalless draw against Burkina Faso on Wednesday.
This will be the 30th meeting between the two nations – Uganda won 15, lost 6 and drawn 8. The Cranes won the first meeting played in Kampala 2-0; Okwi and Bayo were the goal scorers.
Fahad Bayo, Patrick Kaddu, Timothy Awany, and Allan Kyambadde are doubts for today’s game to be played in Lilongwe owing to injuries picked during their home game against Burkina Faso.
