The National Drug Authority (NDA) has blocked the sale of Mbarara University’s Covidex which purports to treat and prevent Covid-19. The herbal medicine is manufactured by Jena Herbals (U) Limited.
The past few weeks, Covidex herbal medicine developed by Mbarara University hit the market. The medicine has been on sale at various pharmacies and drug shops around the country.
“NDA informs the general public that it has not undertaken any assessment or approved Covidex neither has it received any applications from the inventor as required by NDA policy and Act cap 206,” NDA said.
“The Authority has since authorised various products from Jena and they are aware of the processes with regard to drug development, clinical trials and authorization, drug promotion and licensing before sell and production of herbal medicine,” NDA said adding that they have met with Jena Herbals (U) Limited led by Prof. Patrick Ogwang and resolved to follow all the procedures.
According to the Vice chancellor of Mbarara University of science and technology, the drug leaked before going through the necessary procedures of certification.
NDA urged all manufacturers and innovators to seek guidance before production and sale of any drugs and medicines. They encouraged more research in herbal medicine noting that they are always ready to provide guidance to ensure safe, efficacious and quality to the entire population of Uganda.
“The public is warned against the use of products that are not authorised by NDA purporting to treat Covid-19. The public is also advised to follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) to curb the spread of COVID-19 and seek treatment from licenced health facilities,” NDA said.
