Judgment on Dominic Ongwen’s appeal set for December

The International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber has set December 15, 2022 to pass judgment in a case where former commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) Dominic Ongwen is appealing against a 25-year jail term.

“Judgment in the above-mentioned appeals [In the appeal of Mr Dominic Ongwen against the decision of Trial Chamber IX entitled “Trial Judgment” of 4 February 2021 and; In the appeal of Mr Dominic Ongwen against the decision of Trial Chamber IX entitled “Sentence” of 6 May 2021] will be delivered in open court on Thursday, 15 December 2022,” read in part the statement from the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court on November 30th.

The Trial Chamber IX found Dominic Ongwen guilty on 4th February 2021, of a total of 61 crimes comprising crimes against humanity and war crimes, committed in Northern Uganda between 1 July 2002 and 31 December 2005.

On 6 May 2021, Trial Chamber IX sentenced Dominic Ongwen to 25 years of imprisonment. On 21 July and 26 August 2021, the Defence filed its appeal briefs against the conviction and sentence, respectively.

The Appeals Chamber held a hearing on 14 – 18 February 2022 to hear submissions and observations by the parties and participants on these appeals. A phase dedicated to the reparations to victims is ongoing.

Ongwen is currently being held in detention in the Netherlands. He was found guilty for the crimes committed in northern Uganda that left more than 100,000 people dead and over 1.8 million displaced.
