Telecommunication Company MTN Uganda has taken over the naming rights of KCCA FC stadium in Lugogo for the next ten years.
The facility will now be known as ‘MTN Omondi Stadium’. This puts an end to StarTimes deal that saw the Philip Omondi Stadium called ‘The Startimes Stadium’ since 2017.
The new name of the stadium is a move by both parties KCCA and MTN to uphold the legacy of club legend Omondi.
“Phillip Omondi had an illustrious career, so MTN and KCCA felt that his name should be kept alive in the home where he spent much of his career,” Somdev Sen MTN’s Chief Marketing Officer said.
Omondi played for KCCA FC from 1973 to 1979. He also went on to coach the club, and is considered as one of the greatest players KCCA and Uganda has ever produced.
“As the leading supporter of sports in the country, we considered it befitting that we further cement our association to this club,” Somdev Sen added.
KCCA FC Patron and City Lord mayor Erias Lukwago said; “This partnership will be executed as part of the club’s bigger plans to upgrade its home. This is a great day for the two giants (MTN and KCCA) and a huge milestone for the development of local football and also for promoting our brand.”
“There is a huge challenge of managing and financing local clubs in the country, but with support we are getting, we can achieve the dream of becoming the number one club in the region, there is truly light at the end of the tunnel,” he added.
KCCA FC chairman Martin Ssekajja, club CEO Anisha Muhoozi and KCCA players were among those present during the launch of the partnership in Lugogo.
The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.
