Kyambogo University has suspended physical lectures after a number of students tested positive for Covid-19. The suspension of physical lectures was confirmed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Elly Katunguka who said that six students and two staff members tested positive.

In his letter to all Deans and Heads of Departments, Prof. Katunguka said that many students have been coughing, however many of them declined to be tested.

“In a bid to be safe, students have to stay at home or hostels and engage in the online learning and whoever has cough or flu to go for medication,” he said.

He urged Deans and Heads of Departments to engage students through the online learning system as planned and shown on the schedule released by the Academic Registrar.

“I want all members of staff to get their vaccinations. Students should observe the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures,” he said.

According to the orders of the Ministry of Health, the administration has to identify and isolate these students to curb the spread of the virus to other students in the University.

On a sad note, students have declined to adopt online learning saying that it is expensive and a lot of tuition has been paid including the surcharges on delayed payments.

According to Akim Kiyengo Lwanga, the Kyambogo Guild Information Minister, online learning’s implementation should be a gradual process depending on the readiness of students, parents and lecturers.

“Therefore the University Council must reduce tuition or functional fees to enable student’s purchase what is needed to have online studies. We are saying no to online learning,” Kiyengo said.
