Singer Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleon has hit back at fellow music star and former Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine saying he is a beggar.
Last month Bobi Wine criticised a group of singers led by Chameleon for meeting the Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) Gen Salim Saleh seeking to be compensated with over Shs 2 billion which they allege to have lost since the outbreak of Covid-19 Pandemic in Uganda.
“This is not a time for artists to line up before the despot and beg for a few crumbs that fall off his plunder of our nation. Many Ugandans are grappling untold poverty, hunger, disease and oppression. Many of our people are dropping dead because of starvation. It is in such times that artists should rise to the occasion and speak on behalf of the millions of their fans whose voices have been suppressed and locked down,” Bobi said.
Bobi Wine said Uganda Musician’s Association (UM), an association which we started to fight for the industry, has been loudly silent about all this injustice. It was reduced to a beggars’ association.
Speaking to NBS, Chameleon said Bobi Wine is a beggar as well, noting that he went out in the campaigns begging people to vote for him for the Presidency.
“We didn’t go to beg, we went to meet our fan. Salim Saleh is my fan and Bebe Cool’s fan. We once saw Bobi Wine with Gen Saleh, had he gone to beg? We went to advocate for our industry,” Chameleon said.
He said he went to see what he can get out of his music and he dares no explanation to anyone about his music. “I have a right to sell my music in Nigeria, South Africa.”
