The First Lady Janet Museveni who doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports has been impressed by the construction of Hamz Nakivubo stadium which has been revamped by businessman Hamis Kiggundu under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) deal ahead of the 2027 AFCON tournament.

“The NRM government is very proud to see the example of our young people beginning to build Uganda by putting up projects such as this one. We congratulate Ham Kiggundu for this excellent job,” Mrs Museveni said.

The First Lady also commended Hamis Kiggundu for his substantial contribution to improving the country’s sports infrastructure.

“This incredible partnership between the government and the private sector showcases the NRM’s commitment to fostering youth involvement in national development; and I congratulate Ham on this truly remarkable achievement,” Janet Museveni applauded.

The stadium is expected to be commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.

The playing turf and seats have already been installed, and the engineers have erected goalposts and laid the foundations for the floodlights.

A FIFA-licensed Swiss company specializing in goal-line technology has recently assessed the stadium with the possibility of deploying goal line technology at the facility which has a sitting capacity of 35,000 people.

In terms of Nakivubo’s redevelopment progress, which was initially approved by President Museveni in 2015 but only commenced in 2021, the stadium will have boardrooms and conference facilities, changing rooms, rooms for indoor games, an athletics track, a gym, netball, basketball courts, a hotel, and multi-level parking for up to 9,600 cars.

Uganda successfully won the bid to host the 2027 AFCON together with Kenya and Tanzania and Nakivubo is one of the stadiums to be used for the tournament.

The Minister further toured Mandela (Namboole) stadium as well and commended the UPDF construction team for the job well done.
