Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to be announced as Manchester United’s first signing of the Jose Mourinho era in the next 48 hours, according to reports.

Departing PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has agreed to join Manchester United.

De Telegraaf, which has close ties to Ibra’s agent Mino Raiola, says the Swede’s next club will be United.

Ibrahimovic’s move will be confirmed once Jose Mourinho is installed as new manager this week.

The Swede has rejected a Chinese offer worth €50 million to remain in Europe and play for Mourinho at United next season.

Celebrating Uganda Martyrs

Some of the pilgrims at Namugongo Shrines during a previous pilgrimage

Every 3rd of June is a very special day for Christians in Uganda and several others from the neighbouring regions. Thousands of faithfuls trek from their homes to reenact the journey to the Namugongo shrines, the same way the martyrs did years before they were killed.

The journey always starts with faithfuls visiting the different martyr sites within the city such as those in Munyonyo, Kisenyi and top it off with a mass by the Bishop at a selected area. Within the holy week, several people trek for the final journey that leads to the shrines in Namugongo with a mass that is attended by dignitaries and worshippers from all over the region.

The Uganda martyrs were a number of believers who were killed because of their beliefs on orders from Ssekabaka Mwanga II, the then King of Buganda between the years 1885 and 1887. There were twenty two believers who were beatified by Pope Benedict XV on the 6th of June in 1920 and later canonised in 1964 by Pope Paul VI as Saints.

The martyrs belonged to diverse religious beliefs including Catholics  and Anglicans, among them two catechists who were beatified in 2002.The commemorations of the event is to celebrate their Faith in God and how they keep inspiring other believers to stand for their faith and beliefs.

Over the years, the celebrations have evolved from not only being a public holiday for the faithfuls in Uganda, but also an event that brings together several companies in the economy such as; beverage, hospitality and food.

Food venders, are allocated space along the stretches of the Namuwongo- Kyaliwajjala road as well as outside the entrance of the shrine. Hotels, guest houses and hostels are usually fully booked by the day the of the event with faithfuls who came in a little early.

There are many important occasions that take place in the course of every given year in Uganda. But the most important question is; how do we promote them to the rest of the country and to the world?  How do we keep them alive and make returns out of them for our tourism sector?

Using such popular holidays as a platform to showcase Uganda’s tourist attractions is quite a valuable step for the tourism sector, towards producing even bigger and better numbers in terms of revenue generation.

When domestic tourism is put at the forefront of promoting the sector, it easily inspires ordinary Ugandans to become involved in appreciating what our country has to offer to the rest of the world.

South Sudan oil production to increase – minister

South Sudan’s newly appointed national minister of Petroleum in the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU), Dak Duop Bichiok, has said his ministry is working to ensure that the oil production in the country should increase by July 2016.

Minister Dak said that he has set up a team of 21 members to work on the process to increase the oil production, adding that the team will kick off with the implementation of the reform and review in the oil sector as stipulated in the August 2015 peace agreement.

“We have formed a technical committee of 21 members chaired by the Under-secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, Engineer Mohamed Lino, to work out plans for reform and review in the oil sector,” Minister Dak said. He added that the review process will include oil companies operating in the country.

Minister Dak took over the petroleum ministry from his predecessor, Stephen Dhieu Dau, in accordance with the executive power sharing in the peace agreement which gave the petroleum ministry to the opposition faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO).

Oil production in South Sudan reduced significantly from the beginning of the two years of the civil war when almost all the oilfields in Unity state were shut down as well as some others in Upper Nile state.

It reduced from over 300,000 barrels a day in 2013 to about 165,000 barrels per a day in 2014 at the peak of the war.

The reduction of the oil production, which the nation depended on for 98% of its budget, coupled with reduction in global oil prices, has resulted to lack of revenues to run the government.

Minister Dak, a veteran politician, was formerly a national minister in Khartoum before the split of South Sudan from the rest of the Sudan in 2011. He was also governor of Upper Nile state for several years.

Delegates to the NEAR launch held on the eve of the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit held in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Executive Director of Interaid Uganda Scholastica Nasinyama has welcomed the formation of a new global network for local and national humanitarian organizations, saying the development will transform activities related to humanitarian aid work.

Speaking at the launch of the Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR) held on May 22, on the eve of the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey, Ms Nasiyama, who is also a Leadership Council member of NEAR said: “We are looking forward to a long but exciting journey of creating a truly transformative humanitarian and development system.”

Giving a keynote opening speech Mr. Fuat Oktay, President of AFAD, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said: “The reason we are gathered here is because more and more people believe that the humanitarian system cannot cope with the challenges of today.”
Mr Oktay applauded the formation of NEAR, calling it the new way to engage local organisations and communities better able to deliver humanitarian and emergency aid. He said today’s challenges call for innovation, creativity and courage.

Other people who spoke at the launch included Degan Ali, the chair of the network’s Leadership Council (and Executive Director of NEAR founder’s Adeso); Ms. Naomi Tulay-Solanke, a NEAR member and Executive Director of Community Health Initiative in Liberia; Azwar Hasan, Executive Director of Forum Bangun Aceh; Manu Gupta of SEEDS; Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of COAST Trust Bangladesh and the Treasurer of NEAR and Claus Sorensen, former Director General of ECHO.

In his speech Mr Sorensen advised NEAR to ‘keep an eye’ on one of the key commitments emerging from the ‘Grand Bargain’ (in the recent Humanitarian Financing report) concerning a 25% increase in all humanitarian funding to local and national organizations by 2020.
Dubbed the ‘first baby’ of the summit, NEAR brings together 30 African organizations, 21 from Asia and five from the Middle East, to focus on four main areas of aid work including advocacy, financing, organizational development and research.

Sudan to build nuclear reactor

Nuclear power plant in Sudan

Sudan and China have signed an agreement to construct the first nuclear powerhouse in the east African country.

The framework agreement to develop peaceful uses of nuclear energy in Sudan was inked following the first meeting of the China-Sudan Joint Energy Cooperation Commission in Khartoum.

In December 2012, Sudan announced an agreement with China to build a research nuclear reactor, with the approval of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

According to a government official at that time, the reactor aimed to conduct research and scientific applications, and to encourage the use of atomic energy. Sudan carries out 10 projects with the help of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency.

The Sudanese Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity has started the actual preparations for producing power using the nuclear energy in cooperation with the Sudanese Atomic Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as the first nuclear plant is expected to be built in 2020.

The visiting Chinese delegation for the joint energy cooperation meetings is chaired by Nur Bekri, Director of the Chinese National Energy Administration, while the Sudanese side is chaired by the Minister of Finance Badr al-Din Mahmoud.

Speaking after the signing of the framework agreement, Mahmoud said the two sides agreed to discuss the problems that energy production is facing in Sudan and to reach effective solutions.

He added that they will also work to solve challenges facing the new projects, especially Al-Foula electricity plan and the transmission network in South Kordofan.

The government says the lack of funds and economic sanctions impede its efforts to extend electricity service and cover areas in Darfur and South Kordofan.

President Omer al-Bashir met the Chinese delegation on Monday, and discussed bilateral ties and means of bolstering them further.

Al-Bashir directed following the meeting to develop cooperation with China in areas of economy and trade, and expand it in fields of oil, gas, renewed energy, agricultural and industrial investment and infrastructure, said a statement issued following the meeting.

China has invested more than $20 billion in Sudan mostly in the oil sector during the past two decades. Beijing provides low-interest loans and weapons transfers in return for oil.

Minister Mahmoud said they reached an agreement with China to strengthen oil capabilities, to build new facilities and additional oil exportation ports on Red Sea.

Also, they agreed that Chinese companies will explore oil in new blocks, and increase the production of existing fields, besides an agreement for gas exploration and production.

The minister announced that the Chinese oil investments in Sudan have reached 17 billion dollars.

Speaking at the joint meeting; the Minister of Oil and Gas, Mohamed Zayed Aw, said that Sudan exploited only small amounts of its oil reserves, and called on China to increase its investment in the oil sector.

On his part, the Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity, Mutaz Musa, pointed out that the ministry is implementing 155 electricity projects with China at a cost of 10 billion dollars.

He said that his government will fund the $10 billion projects from multiple sources, adding that the five-year plan includes power plants and dams.

Juba hospital in power blackout

The entrance to the Juba Teaching Hospital in South Sudan

South Sudan’s main referral hospital has been without power for seven consecutive days, as medical practitioners used candles and torches to aid work.

The country’s ministry of finance, health and electricity and dams is yet to officially explain the cause of the current power crisis.

Workers at Juba Teaching hospital confirmed the power problem at the facility has persisted for about a week.

Unconfirmed reports say for doctors to carry out an emergency operation on patient in a critical condition, relatives would be asked to provide fuel to run the hospital generator during an operation.

This situation, officials said, had never ever occurred in the institution’s history.

A medical source speaking on condition of anonymity said that medical personnel had to use oxygen cylinders for patients who needed oxygen and candles to light some general wards as they do not have fuel to run the generators.

The hospital’s sensitive areas such as the Neonatal intensive care unit that utilizes incubators for the premature babies and the operating theatres have been affected by the power failure because the hospital lacks backup generators.

The main referral institution has since failed to secure fuel to run its standby generators.

Meanwhile, health ministry officials say their counterparts at the finance, petroleum, and the electricity and dams ministries were notified about the problem, but no action has been taken.

Kanungu MP uses Museveni’s Shs.5m to feast with Mbabazi

James Kaberuka a former district councilor for Kihiihi town council is now an MP in the 10th Parliament

It’s a normal thing for a politician to switch posts but the speed at which newly elected Kinkizi West MP Nigirimana James Kaberuka does it is alarming.

During his post swearing in party at a top city hotel, the former district councilor for Kihiihi town council changed allegiance from his NRM boss Museveni to ex-mentor and failed presidential candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi who he replaces in the August House.

The novice in Kaberuka did Museveni dirty when he used his “5m gift money” to organize a party, invite Mr. Mbabazi, pledge to become loyal to him again and go ahead to thank GoFoward — because they and not NRM people voted for him.

It’s a huge distinction from how Kaberuka distanced himself from the Amama camp back in 2014 and later during the campaigns when he was sacked as Prime Minister. While the people of Kanungu saw it as a witch-hunt of a long-serving NRM cadre and a leader who has recruited so many people into the NRM, Kaberuka is said to have spotted Mbabazi’s woes as an opportunity to approach Museveni for a chance to take back the Kinkizi East seat for the ruling party his selling tool was convincing the President that the people of Kanungu were 99 per cent NRM; not because of Mbabazi but Museveni before also begging the former premier to financially bankroll his campaign and retain ‘their’ control over the district. Still, we’re told Mbabazi took the comments as low key betrayal talk, and he was unhappy about them until now.

When the Kanungu bigwigs gathered, everyone in the house was busy bowing for Mbabazi
When the Kanungu bigwigs gathered, everyone in the house was busy bowing for Mbabazi

Since then, a lot of water has passed under the bridge, with the situation complicated by Mbabazi’s disappearance from the political scene

According to a source who was at the party … when the Kanungu bigwigs gathered on last week, everyone in the house was busy bowing for Mbabazi and calling him the King of Kanungu. We’re told what really happened is Kaberuka and his family served Mbabazi cake and champagne — as part of the show — and during the merrymaking the new legislator said when he was campaigning, Mbabazi did everything he could to help him win … because he is a loyal cadre who only publically supports Museveni for the sake.

Not to say that during the cleansing ceremony, Mbabazi himself was more gracious, thanking the Kinkizi people for the gift of electing Kaberuka and vowed to work well with him as his predecessor like he did in campaigns.

UCC lauds Airtel’s Tugabane promo

Airtel Uganda team led by Legal and Regulatory Director Dennis Kakonge receive an award from UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi at the 2016 ACIA awards.

The Uganda Communications Commission, has recognized Airtel Uganda for their contribution to ICT development at the sixth edition of the annual ACIA Awards.

Airtel Uganda won the “ICT for Development” award for their “Tugabane” product; an enhanced internet product which allows an internet customer to subscribe to a data bundle on one mobile line while adding up to 4 other mobile numbers to surf from the same bundle. This data sharing option has close to no restrictions- allowing customers to surf from any geographical location using any internet enabled device.

The award was presented to representatives from Airtel Uganda during the ceremony held at the Kampala Serena Hotel Conference Centre.

Established in 2010, the ACIA Awards purport to foster innovation through the recognition and reward of outstanding ICT innovations. They provide a platform upon which outstanding ICT innovations can be showcased and propelled to further success. The awards were established in 2010 by the Uganda Communications Commission and have since recognized and awarded various innovations across several sectors including: Young Innovators, Business Excellence, Service Excellence, ICT for Development, and Digital Content. These winners and runners up of these five categories are determined by a panel of eminent and independent judges.

Commenting on the win, Airtel Uganda’s Marketing Director, Prasoon Lal said “Tugabane” was launched to enhance internet connectivity among Ugandans.

Since its inception, “Tugabane”, the first innovation of its kind in the Ugandan Mobile Internet industry, has seen continued increase in uptake by Airtel Uganda customers. The product has also rivaled traditional Wi-Fi hotspots which have limited coverage.

“On behalf of Airtel Uganda, I would like to express our gratitude to the Uganda Communications Commission which has provided a platform that allows for companies like ours to be celebrated for both our innovations and passions,” Lal said.

‘”Tugabane” is more that sharing data. It is convenient, fast, transcends location and finally, gives our customers data bundles at the most affordable rates,” he concluded.

Godfrey Mutabazi, Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission said “…the purpose of the ACIA awards is to encourage individuals, academia, industry, government agencies and other entities to harness ICTs in creating solutions to Uganda’s development challenges.”

He thanked this year’s participants and called for increased participation in the coming year.
