Ssemujju opts for billboard campaign posters

Must read

Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the Member of Parliament representing people of Kira Municipality has opted for billboard campaign posters to reduce on poster defacing.

This comes at a time when some political party supporters are engaging in defacing and removing posters of the opponents in different parts of the country.

Ssemujju who is also the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC spokesperson claims that his paper campaign posters have been defaced by a group of youths from the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM.

Because of this challenge, Hon Ssemujju hopes that it will be hard for the people who are fond of defacing his posters to do so since they are raised high and they are hard to remove.

Meddie Mayanja one of the people found flaming Ssemujju’s posters argues that posters hung outdoors are exposed to weather conditions and could be subjected to pranks or vandalism therefore, billboards will help them since billboards are hard to destroy by either people or any weather conditions.

According to Farouk Kabuye who works with galaxy signs limited, a company that prints billboard posters, billboard posters is expensive. Saying that an example of and a half meter billboard costs around shillings 250,000.

Ssemujju further cautions people who engage in defacing posters of the opponents, adding that there are specific spaces where everybody would like to be but if you find other people pinned their posters first, they should not tamper with it.

This website established that there are other campaign posters of other candidates in areas of Namboole, Kireka, Bweyogerere among others where many posters have been covered and others removed especially those of people power candidates, FDC, NRM and others for independent candidates.

Section 83 (2) of the Parliamentary Election Act 2001, states that “Any person who maliciously defaces or removes or tears any election poster of any nominated candidate commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding thirty currency points or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.”

In Kira Municipality, the toughest battle is between the FDC flag bearer Ssemujju and the NRM flag bearer Emmanuel Ssenkeezi Katumba. However, Ssemujju says there are other competitors who think that by defacing other peoples posters will make them visible.
