One person has allegedly been shot dead during chaotic scenes that ensued at Kalerwe northern wing of the Market earlier today. The death has been confirmed by the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.
The deceased has been identified as George Ssejjemba, a hawker working in Kampala. According to Owoyesigire, Kalerwe police was alerted about the chaos at the northern wing of the market and swang to manage the situation.
According to Owoyesigire, the chaos was started by two night security guards contracted by the Hajji Abasi, one of the managers of the market. The two are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station, the two were demanding their pay of Shs35 millon noting that they had gone several months without pay.
“It is averred that the two and others at large started destroying various goods and food however, police led by Inspector of police (IP) Mariam Ato intervened and started dispersing the crowds but during the scuffle, Ssejjemba was it by a stray bullet,” he said
