Makerere University Guild Health Minister Ssewanyana Nelson has petitioned the administration calling for lobbying and mass vaccination of students.

According to Ssewanyana, the University administrators in partnership with the University Hospital can safely lobby for doses for all students. He said that they can anticipate and plan for safe reopening of the university by setting up a functioning strategy to acquire vaccines from the government.

“We appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of the University staff, medical students and Students’ with disabilities. We therefore believe that now, the strategy can be modified and ensure that all our students can be a priority and be vaccinated as soon as possible,” part of the letter reads.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and closure of schools in March  2020, academic activities at the mighty University and other institutions of learning have negatively affected, leaving many students uncertain about their studies.

Recently,  the minister of health Jane Ruth Aceng said government committed to secure 45 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines with 9 million of Johnson and Johnson vaccine and 18 million of Sinorpharm vaccine expected to arrive in September and October respectively.

The government is currently conducting a mass Covid-19 vaccination campaign for all teachers.
