The US is underestimating Huawei, says founder Ren Zhengfei

Ren Zhengfei

Huawei founder, Ren Zhengfei, has downplayed the impact of the US executive order that could cripple Huawei’s ability to collaborate with American companies like Google and Qualcomm.

In comments to Chinese media gathered at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters, reported on by the Global Times state newspaper, Ren says the 90-day extension to normal business relations granted by the US won’t make much difference to Huawei due to the company’s existing contingency plans.

“In such a critical moment, I’m grateful to US companies, as they’ve contributed a lot to Huawei’s development and showed their conscientiousness on the matter,” Ren says. “As far as I know, US companies have been making efforts to persuade the US government to let them cooperate with Huawei … We always need US-developed chipsets, and we can’t exclude American products with a narrow mind.”

Ren says that the trade restrictions won’t affect Huawei’s 5G rollout and doesn’t expect anyone to catch up to the company’s technology in the next two to three years, according to Reuters, which quotes him as adding that the US government is “underestimating Huawei’s capabilities.”

Ren, 74, is a famously private individual who almost never gives interviews, but he’s found himself in the limelight more often of late due to the recent escalation of tension between his company and the US — not least the US-ordered arrest of his daughter, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou. Ren’s time as an engineer in the People’s Liberation Army before founding Huawei has also contributed to the air of suspicion over the company.

Google revoked Huawei’s Android license on Sunday in compliance with President Trump’s executive order, while Intel and Qualcomm have reportedly instructed employees to stop working with the Chinese telecoms giant.

The moves would prevent Huawei from selling devices running Google apps and the Play Store, as well as building phones with US-made components, but Huawei says it has built an alternative OS and stockpiled hardware for this eventuality.

Dangote named among greatest leaders on Earth…global leaders laud his public spirit

Aliko Dangote

The rating carried out by the Fortune Magazine, an American multinational business magazine headquartered in New York City, United States was released recently and focused mainly on the businesses run by the men and how they have used it to impact their society positively.

The time-tested magazine, which first edition was published in February 1930, said the world’s greatest leaders both men and women are transforming the world and inspiring others to do so in business, government, philanthropy and the arts.

“These thinkers, speakers, and doers make bold choices and take big risks- and move others to do the same”, the magazine declared.

This is the first time Fortune magazine is recognizing and including Aliko Dangote in the annual ranking. Specifically, Dangote having popped up in the magazine’s radar earned nomination after being adjudged as having used business to acquire wealth and who is now converting his wealth into impactful philanthropy through his Aliko Dangote Foundation.

The top 10 greatest men and women, according to Fortune are: Bill and Melinda Gates, Jacinda Ardem (Prime Minister, New Zealand), Robert Mueller (Special Counsel, Department of Justice), Pony Ma (Founder and CEO, Tencent), Satya Nadella (CEO, Microsoft), Greta Thunberg (Student and climate activist, Sweden), Margrethe Vestager (Commissioner for Competition, European Union), Anna Nimiriano (Editor-in-Chief, Juba Monitor), Jose Andres (Chef/Founder, World Central Kitchen), and Dough Mcmillon and Lisa Woods (CEO; Senior Director, Strategy & Design for U.S. Benefits, Walmart).

The ranking of Dangote as one of the greatest business leaders has attracted comments by eminent persons around the world who described him as worthy of the nomination going by his business acumen and philanthropic gestures.

Global business giant and founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gate extolled the efforts of Dangote in making businesses play roles in provision of sound public health through his various interventions in health care issues especially in the fight against malnutrition and routine polio.

Gates, who himself was ranked along with Dangote, said “Aliko Dangote, through his leadership at the Aliko Dangote Foundation, is a key partner in the Polio eradication effort, strengthening routine immunisation and fighting malnutrition in Nigeria and across Africa. Aliko bridges the gap between private business and public health in a unique way and our shared belief that Nigeria will thrive when every Nigerian is able to thrive drives our partnership.”

Renowned activist and co-founder of ONE, Paul David Hewson, popularly called Mr. Bono said he was not surprised at Mr. Dangote’s feat globally, saying his vision is as big as the African continent.

Bono, a global campaigner on taking action to end extreme poverty especially in Africa said: “Aliko has a vision just the size of his continent, but with humility of somebody who has just started his first job. It’s no surprise to me that Fortune would recognise his leadership because we have seen first-hand, through his service on ONE’s Board, the benefits of his wise counsel and grace.”

Also, the popular Economic analyst, Mr. Bismark Rewane stated that “Aliko remains understated but very potent and Africa’s most successful and decorated entrepreneur. He is a global financial and managerial behemoth.”

Dangote as the Africa’s richest – worth $16.4 billion, according to Bloomberg – and the four publicly traded companies under the umbrella of his Dangote Industries now account for about a third of the value of the Nigerian stock exchange.

That wealth is based on a big bet on Nigeria’s economic independence: Dangote’s peers give him credit for helping the country become self-sufficient in the sectors in which his companies compete (cement, agriculture and mining).

The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) is the Philanthropic endeavor of Aliko Dangote. The main objective of the Foundation is to reduce the number of lives lost to malnutrition and disease.

The Foundation is poised to combat Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in children, as the core of its programming. It has also resolved to use its investments in health, education, and economic empowerment to help lift people out of poverty.

It would be recalled that Dangote was last year ranked among 75 most powerful persons on the planet, ahead of the Vice-President of the United States of America, Mike Pence.

Aliko Dangote has been named among most powerful persons in the world for the past five consecutive years. According to the Forbe’s 2018 ranking of the World Powerful people, Dangote ranked among world leaders like Xi Jinping, the Chinese President, Vladimir Putin the Russian President and Donald Trump, the President of the US, all of whom were ranked first, second and third respectively.

He was the only Nigerian on the list and one of the only two Africans who made the list with the other being the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who was ranked 45thmost powerful.

In the same vein, he was named among the 100 most influential personalities in the world in 2018 by Time Magazine, leading business broadcast organisation. The CNBC had earlier in same year ranked Dangote as one of the 25 people which have had most profound impact on business and finance worldwide.

He was rated the most influential African by Jeune Afrique in their classification of the most influential 50 Africans in 2018, and was also named the 6th most charitable person in the world in the same year according to Richtopia, a United Kingdom-based digital platform. He is, in addition, the richest African, according to Forbes.

Dangote stepped up his humanitarian activities recently spending billions of Naira to build hospitals and critical hospital equipment, the lack of which has forced Nigerians of means to seek medical attention abroad.

He also donated a N1.2 billion Business School complex to Bayero University in Kano and another one for the University of Ibadan Business School. Last month he donated 10 blocks of hall of students’ hostel that can accommodate 2,160 beds to the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna state.

The business mogul has continued through the Foundation by disbursing N10 billion to vulnerable women across the 774 local governments in the country.

Dangote made a donation of $2 million to the World Food Programme as part of efforts to help Pakistani nationals devastated by floods in the year 2010.

Aliko Dangote was made the chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief, which raised in excess of N11.35 billion, of which Dangote himself contributed N2.5 billion, an amount higher than the entire contribution from the 36 state governors in Nigeria.

So far, the Foundation has spent over N7 billion in the troubled North Eastern part of Nigeria to see that the Internally Displaced Persons as a result of the activities of insurgents, are re-integrated back to the bigger society.

Vanilla prices hit Shs250,000 per kilo

Ugandan vanilla beans

The State Minister for Agriculture, Christopher Kibanzanga, has said that the price of vanilla continues to rise due to the increased demand against very low supply of the beans.

Remarking in Kampala while addressing the media, the minister, said in Uganda, the price has reached as high as Shs250, 000 per kilogram for green vanilla beans at the farm-gate and therefore asked farmers to be vigilant as vanilla harvesting period draws closer.

He declared June 15th onwards and December 15th as the appropriate Dates for the first season and the second season of harvesting vanilla.

Last year, Uganda produced about 300,000Kg of Vanilla and exported 23,000Kg of cured vanilla worth US $6.40 million. “It is not surprising to hear that vanilla is now referred to as the ‘Green Gold’. This is because of the price fetched from cured vanilla which is higher than the value of one kilogram of silver.” He said

He said government is taking precautions on vanilla harvesting because it’s a high value crop especially for the international market. There have been cases of theft the crop and murder of farmers already recorded in Kasese district and others.

“We have observed each time vanilla prices rise, we receive cases of theft, and loss of lives, wide spread premature vanilla harvesting which ultimately compromises the quality of Ugandan vanilla. Worse of all, the vanilla farmer is the most affected party.”

In 2017 and 2018, the major importing countries for Ugandan vanilla included USA, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, Israel, South Africa, Turkey and Hungary.

Mr Aga Sekalala senior lauded government for finally hearing their plea as vanilla farmers and setting dates for harvesting which is an international practice that comes with safety measures.

Vanilla is one of the high value crops grown in 25 districts of Uganda, mainly in Central, Eastern and Western parts of the country. Global consumption of vanilla ranges between 2,100 metric tons to 2,400 metric tons per year over the last 10 years. However, there is now increasing demand for all-natural and organic vanilla from major Global food companies.

Entrepreneur attributes that will make you a star

Martin Zwilling

By Martin Zwilling

To be successful as an entrepreneur, you don’t have to be a fabulous person, but it helps. Some people, and some entrepreneurs, have that something extra that you can’t quite put your finger on, like Ryan Seacrest is searching for on American Idol. But the entrepreneurs that have it, including Elon Musk and Richard Branson, seem to be able to effortlessly get team members, investors, and customers to follow them anywhere.

In her classic book on this subject, “The Essentials of Fabulous,” Ellen Lubin-Sherman, who has been tracking fabulous people most of her life as a writer and journalist, tried to net it out. She identifies less than a dozen primary qualities for fabulous people in general, and I have honed and tuned these to ten that apply especially to entrepreneurs, in my experience:

Be passionate about life, as well as your business. Entrepreneurs who have passion in business, as well as their life, may drive us all batty, but there is never a dull moment. These moments are always being transformed into options to be explored. They make life interesting and an adventure, and everyone loves an adventure.

Be delightfully authentic and honest. Authentic entrepreneurs are destined and determined to have fun, as well as move forward in business. They have an unerring confidence that’s inspiring yet attainable. They savor relationships, and are generous with themselves and their smarts, so they attract a savvy following.

Be revered for an amazing positive attitude. Rather than cave when things get tough, optimistic entrepreneurs go analytic, looking for pivots that keep their goals in sight. They are disciplined, upbeat thinkers, but they don’t take themselves too seriously, and know how and when to laugh it off. A negative attitude takes everyone down.

Be warm and completely accessible. Warmth comes from your smile, and facial expressions that indicate genuine interest. Investors and partners look for entrepreneurs that will look them straight in the eye when speaking, and give their full and undivided attention while you’re speaking. Everyone looks for “rapport talk” rather than “report talk.”

Have impeccable manners and flair. Entrepreneurs who are always looking for opportunities to be gracious and considerate are going to be liked, admired, sought after, and trusted. In business, that means staying connected, showing up on time, with no signs of boredom or preoccupation. It’s not always about you, so dress and talk for them.

Be competent and confident. Competent people accomplish more in business because they’re driven by a pronounced sense of purpose. They are willing to put themselves on the line, and have confidently done their homework to know what it takes. They are reliably consistent, and unafraid to ask for help.

Able to just “get it.” Entrepreneurs who “get it” are emotionally attuned to peers and customers, so that their gut-level instincts become informed judgments that move the business forward. “With-it”-ness takes work, like reading the right blogs every day, challenging yourself to stay abreast of the latest technology, and social media marketing.

Have a big bandwidth. Can you talk, with equal engagement and respect, to your company’s CFO and the guy who pumps your gas? Look for opportunities to praise and nurture the people with diversity. Get comfortable out of your circle of interest and expertise. Go for that black belt in networking.

Be vivid virtually. Developing a superior virtual presence requires a mastery of several mediums – phone, email, text messaging, as well as handwritten notes – but the payoff is undeniable. But don’t overuse virtual communication to the exclusion of face-to-face time In all cases, don’t forget your sense of aplomb, mastery of tone, and the spell-checker.

Attract a superstar board of advisors. The right board is a group of individuals who may not know one another, but know you, and know your business domain. Plus, they need to be willing to put their brains and their expertise at your disposal as long as you need it. No entrepreneur is an island, so take the initiative to build an advisory board.

Paying attention to all these things is how you become a fabulous entrepreneur, another entrepreneur idol. I’m sorry, but there is no magic, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Of course, it will never happen if you don’t start or don’t believe. But it’s worth the effort, unless you have something better to do?

Guinea disqualified from U17 World Cup over age-cheating, replaced by Senegal

Guinea U17 team

Guinea U-17 football team has been disqualified from taking part in the 2019 U-17 World Cup after it was found out that two of their players were more than the 17-years old they claimed.

Guinea, who lost to Cameroon in the final, thought they had secured their World Cup spot by reaching the semi-finals.

“The players Aboubacar Conte and Ahmed Tidiane Keita were not eligible to participate with Guinea in the Final Tournament of the U-17 Afcon played in Tanzania,” Caf said in a statement.

“Due to the existence of two different passports for each of the players concerned, one passport was used for the International Under-16 Cup held in Japan, the year of birth date being 2001, and the other for the final U-17 Afcon tournament in Tanzania, which indicated the year of birth as 2002, which clearly shows that there was forgery.”

“Because of their participation, the team is excluded from the competition and all its results and achievements during the competition must be cancelled.”

“The Guinean Football Federation, following its disqualification, is prevented from representing Caf at the Fifa U-17 World Cup to be held in 2019.”

They will be replaced by Senegal for the U17 World Cup in Brazil this year and have been slapped with a U-17 Nations Cup ban in the next two editions.

“The Organizing Committee will be invited to reinstate Senegal and the Executive Committee to approve the participation of Senegal as Caf’s 4th representative at the Fifa U-17 World Cup to be held in 2019,” Caf stated following a meeting of its disciplinary committee.

The runners-up silver medals which Guinea received in Tanzania must be returned within 21 days and if they fail to do so a penalty of $US 20,000 will be imposed.

Caf had also stopped six players – including one Guinean – from taking part at the Nations Cup in Tanzania following MRI tests before the tournament.

Senegal now joins Cameroon, Nigeria and Angola as Africa’s representatives at this year’s U-17 World Cup in Brazil.

Morocco also reported champions Cameroon for allegedly fielding over-age players at the tournament in Tanzania, but the final decision is yet to be confirmed by Caf.

Petitioner calls for disciplinary action against UPC’s Akena and Betty Amongi over ties with Museveni

Jimmy-Akena-and-Betty-Amongi.

The President of the Uganda People’s Congress Jimmy Akena and his wife Betty Amongi Akena, who is the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, could face the party’s disciplinary committee if the letter written on May 17, by a party member is to go by.

Mr Okello Kokas in his letter to the Chairman of the disciplinary committee of the party accuses Akena, minister Amongi and two other members Onac Okello and Celestino Ouma of hobnobbing with President Yoweri Museveni to the extent that the accused have endorsed Museveni’s 2021 presidential candidature without the authorisation of the party.

The petitioner alleges that Akena received billions of shillings from Museveni on behalf of UPC but has never declared it to the party organs. “He has received billions of money from President Museveni in the name of UPC and for the UPC though he has gone ahead to personalize it without declaring it to the party,” he says.

He alleges Akena hoodwinked the UPC Cabinet when he promised to convene the national council to discuss the approval of the appointment of Amongi as minister by Museveni and that he has never done so to date. Mr Akena couldn’t answer his mobile phone when contacted by Eagle Online.

“He (Akena) has abused the party constitution by not calling any organs of the party. It is compulsory for him to call for the meetings at least once in a year,” he says.

The petitioner also accuses Amongi of accepting to work with Museveni’s NRM as minister of lands without the approval of the UPC’s national council or delegates’ conference.

He further accuses of mobilising support for Museveni. “She (Amongi) is busy rooting support for President Museveni using UPC structures,” he alleges.

Further the petitioner accused the two other party members Okello and Ouma of moving a resolution in the name of UPC and on behalf of the UPC without authorization by the party to endorse Museveni’s 2021 candidature.

He also accused the latter two of mobilising UPC structures in Kole without authorization by the party to support Museveni come 2021 presidential election.

“I request the committee hearing be called so that I can give evidence to support my complaint against each of the above and I am looking forward to hear from you within one week from the date of this complaint,” Kokas says in his petition.
