“The formal disciplinary proceedings into the aforementioned individuals stemmed from an extensive investigation into various international matches that Mr Wilson Raj Perumal attempted to manipulate for betting purposes. This large-scale investigation was conducted by FIFA over several years through its Integrity Department and in cooperation with the relevant stakeholders and authorities.

“The decisions were notified to the individuals concerned, and the relevant bans come into force immediately.”

However, it is said that Owino has appealed the ten-year ban slapped on him by Fifa.

NRM Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba

Secretary General (SG) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Justine Kasule Lumumba has attributed the recent disaster in which at least 18 people perished when a rain storm hit Buyende and Kamuli districts to the rampant cutting down of trees for charcoal burning.

Charcoal burning is a major economic activity to majority in the Eastern districts of Buyende and Kamuli.

While at the burial of some of the victims in Kidera sub county, Lumumba said on Wednesday that the authorities should jealously guard against deforestation and instead crusade for the planting of trees in the area be implemented.

“You should arrest and prosecute whoever is involved in deforestation because it is what has left Buyende in a state of drought and at risk of disaster”. she said.

Adding “RDC please make sure you don’t allow the cutting down of trees to continue because it is now a security matter. The district should introduce an ordinance that would protect all trees in this district, said Lumumba to the applause from the crowd.

The district Woman MP, Veronica Kadogo had earlier in her speech indicated that the storm only ravaged those areas where trees have been cut.

The SG also said that the NRM would top up some Shs200,000 to the Shs500,000 from government being given to the affected families for decent burial of each of the deceased.

“I am also going to champion a campaign to lobby seeds for farmers to plant in order to prevent hunger in the future since floods destroyed all what you had planted,” added Lumumba.

She pulled out Shs7 million and gave it to the district to help in free registration for Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) to all candidates in the affected villages. Part of the money would be spent on medical, or any other deemed by district authorities.

She applauded the quick response by the local leadership, councilors, LCV chairman, Robert Ziribasanga and MPs, Robert Musoke (Budiope West) and Veronica Babirye (District Woman), the security under the leadership of the RDC, Col. Richard Ogwang.

She appreciated the healthy workers who were on duty in both Buyende and Kamuli hospitals to save lives of the survivors. Lumumba said that the unity demonstrated during this difficult time should be upheld.

At least 18 lives were lost and hundreds of families left with no food stuffs, livestock and homes in Busoga North after six hours of heavy rainfall that ravaged several villages on Monday night.

In Buyende district, Kidera Sub County alone lost at least 13 lives, according to police reports while more than 200 others remain hospitalized.

Hundreds of people were left homeless and with no food and clothes.

African Development Bank boosts cyclone response with emergency relief package

Cyclone in Mozambique

Malawi’s recovery and reconstruction plans in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai has received a boost from the African Development Bank, which is supporting the country with an emergency relief package and measures to combat the effect of climate change in the Southern African region.

Mateus Magala, the Bank’s Vice President for Corporate Services and Human Resources, led a delegation to Lilongwe this week, to discuss the institution’s intervention plans with public and civil society officials in Malawi.

Magala conveyed Bank President Akinwumi Adesina’s sympathies to Malawian President Peter Mutharika and the people of Malawi.

“We have come to express our support to Malawi and to partner with the Government of Malawi in its ongoing efforts to provide immediate relief and reconstruction in affected sections of the country,” he said.

Magala informed officials that the development finance institution had set up an Emergency Recovery Fund, which will disburse US $100 million to jumpstart reconstruction efforts in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Bank is also planning to redirect funding, totaling $1.4 million, to the immediate relief effort, reallocated from savings and extensions of ongoing Bank projects in Malawi’s water, roads and agriculture sectors.

The Bank has already availed $250,0000 to Malawi, from its Emergency Relief Fund, for the purchase of emergency food items to avert hunger following the loss of crops damaged by the severe floods. Gondwe acknowledged receipt of this fund during his meeting with the Bank delegation.

He said, the Bank’s Climate Fund will also release $150,000.00 to Malawi to enable authorities to assist communities and internally displaced persons impacted by the cyclone. The Bank’s long-term plans include designing and developing mechanisms for climate insurance and mitigating climate change.

Close to sixty people have died, and about 1 million persons across 15 districts have been displaced by the severe floods, mostly in the south of the country, where entire villages were submerged in water. Private sector activities and operators in the land-locked nation of about 18 million people were also severely impaired by the cyclone.

“Now is the time to talk about long-term and permanent solutions to the problems of floods in Malawi. We need to build houses and new structures but, above all, we ought to take advantage of this calamity to accelerate our irrigation development systems,” Gondwe remarked.

Cyclone Idai hit Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe in mid-March 2019. Hardest hit was Mozambique, where the cyclone killed about 600 people. More than 1,600 people were injured, according to the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. Malawi’s Homeland Security Minister Dausi estimates that about $365 million will be needed immediately for the reconstruction of bridges, schools, hospitals and homes.

Van Dijk to be crowned PFA Player of the Year as Pogba is included in Team of the Year

Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has beaten Raheem Sterling to become the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year for 2019.

But perhaps the biggest surprise is the inclusion of Manchester United’s Paul Pogba in a PFA Team of the Year that does not include Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The official announcement is due on Friday and, as MailOnline revealed on Wednesday, Liverpool centre half Van Dijk has won the backing of his fellow professionals for his outstanding contribution in the best defence in the Premier League this season. As well as losing only one game in the League so far, they have kept an impressive 18 clean sheets.

The Dutchman was on a six-man shortlist that included his Anfield team-mate Sadio Mane as well as Sterling, fellow Manchester City players Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva and Hazard.

And while five of those shortlisted are in the team of the year, Hazard has been excluded in a team that includes Pogba despite a lack of consistency for Manchester United this season.

Pogba is the only player outside Liverpool and City to make the XI, with six City and four Liverpool players reflecting the dominance of the clubs battling for this season’s Premier League title.

Ederson, Aymeric Laporte, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva, Aguero and Sterling are the City six, and Van Dijk is joined by Mane and Liverpool’s full backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

It’s the first time in the 45-year history of the award that the team has been selected from just three clubs.

Victory for Van Dijk means the prize remains with Liverpool, following Mohamed Salah’s win last season. Other Liverpool players to have been awarded the honour are Luis Suarez (2013-14), Steven Gerrard (2005-06), John Barnes (1987-88), Ian Rush (1983-84), Kenny Dalglish (1982-83) and Terry McDermott (1979-80). – Story via Daily Mail UK

The 46th edition of the PFA Awards will be held in London this Sunday, the 28th of April 2019.
