The task to reach onto a unanimous candidate for Arua by- election began early this month at Democratic party (DP) President General Norbert Mao’s residence in Pece, Gulu district however opposition politicians have been meeting for a single candidate in a hotly contested race.

Remarking at Speke hotel, former presidential candidate and president general for peoples development party (PDP) Abed Bwanika said they are convinced that Mr Wadri is the only person who can represent Arua municipality and the people of west Nile who requires representation.

In a bid to build a block that can cause change, Abed said they considered Wadri who has withered storm in Ugandan politics is the only capable candidate to represent Arua municipality.

Jinja east MP Paul Mwiru said they had to come together for a joint candidate as they did in Jinja.

“Even when we said we decided to deliver it ourselves, voters united in the ballot box and surprised us in Bugiri municipality endorsing Asuman Basalirwa to represent them in August house, the only way to deliver an apology is by winning Arua municipality parliamentary seat,” he said.

It is a vote for NRM not individual – Engola tells Arua

Nusra Tiperu, the NRM flag bearer for the Arua Municipality By-Elections

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman for northern Uganda, Sam Engola has urged the Party supporters in Arua Municipality to prioritise the Party against an individual candidate in the ongoing by-election.

Engola made the remarks while meeting party supporters at Anyafio South cell and repeated the same message in another meeting at Republic Hotel in Nvara ward this Thursday afternoon.

He emphasised that under multiparty politics, the candidate’s party is considered stronger than an individual carrier of the flag.

He however added that the NRM voters had equally made a good choice in voting Nusura Tiperu in their primaries.

“Nusura Tiperu is here to carry our flag and as party leaders we are also here to remind you to vote NRM. It is all about NRM here and not individualism” he further preached to his attentive audience.

He was in company of the Deputy Secretary General, Richard Todwong and the candidate herself.

The ruling party is in efforts to maintain Arua Municipality Parliamentary seat.

NRM party has intensified its campaigns with improvised new strategies that will leave no single voter isolated.

Stop violence against children—Ambassador Malac

US Ambassador to Uganda Deborah Malac

US Ambassador to Uganda Deborah Malac has called for creation of conducive environment for reporting and prosecution of perpetrators of child abuse for curtailing of Violence against children.

Ms Malac who marked during the Launch of Uganda Violence against Children Survey Report said, globally it is estimated that over 1 Billion children experience severe physical abuse each year, however it is quite disturbing by the high level of violence against children in Uganda.

“It is every one’s obligation to protect the victims of violence, Parents have critical roles to play and being part of the solution. Children need safe spaces to be but we who are supposed to provide are not doing enough, we need collective efforts in this,” She said.

Alluding to the report, in Uganda, 11per cent of boys and 13 per cent of girls experienced Sexual Violence every 12 months in the last three years. Further indicates that Most of the people who sexually predate on Ugandan children are relatives and neighbours. However Only 9 per cent of children that experienced sexual violence sought help and Only 6 per cent received the help they wanted.

Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Uganda Noreen Prendiville said emotional or psychological violence includes restricting a child’s movements, denigration, ridicule, threats and intimidation, discrimination, rejection and other non-physical forms of hostile treatment.

The report found out that 1 in 3 females and 1 in 6 males experienced child violence while growing up. It also indicates that children that face violence are likely to commit suicide, “Protection of Children against violence is incomparable and noble. We all need to take part in this noble course,” added Ms Prendiville

Junior minister for education Rosemary Seninde submitted that government is committed to ensuring a positive legal and policy environment where children’s rights is a priority.

“School is supposed to be a safe environment for children and not a hell of a place for torture, my Ministry banned corporal punishments and we continue to engage teachers and parents to completely abandon this way of disciplining children. Sexual harassment in schools is not right. Action should be taken against the culprits,”

“Violence will always beget violence, if children are raised in a violent household chances are they won’t be any better as parents when they grow up. Violence against children has no reasonable degree or situations of acceptability. As long as it’s against their rights its violence and therefore illegal,” said Dr Jessica Nsungwa Commissioner for Child Health.

Finance Minister Kasaija ready to drop Bagyenda nomination on FIA board

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija has said he is ready to withdrawal the nomination of Ms. Justine Bagyenda to serve on the board of the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) should Parliament decline to vet her as stipulated by the law.

Months ago, Kasaija nominated Ms Bagyenda who was the Executive Director Supervision at Bank of Uganda (BOU) to serve a second term on the FIA board despite ongoing investigations against her for alleged illicit enrichment.

Sections of the public including the civil society and politicians did not support Kasaija’s nomination of Bagyenda because she was and is still a subject of investigation by the FIA and the Inspector General of Government (IGG) for alleged money laundering.

Yesterday legislators under the African Parliamentary Network (APN) against Corruption said in a statement that Ms Bagyenda doesn’t deserve to serve on the FIA board because of the controversies surrounding her.

The investigations became paramount after a whistle blower leaked her bank account details showing she had over Shs19billion in three different banks and 17 properties in prime areas.

Last month MPs queried why minister Kasaija had nominated Bagyenda on the FIA board well knowing she was under investigation and had been fired from her position by BOU Governor Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile who replaced her with Dr. Tumubweine Twinemanzi.

Kasaija now says he will listen to the directive of Parliament on the matter.

“I proposed her name to Parliament. It’s up to Parliament now to tell me what to do, because if I took a decision it would mean I’m prejudging Ms Bagyenda,” he said, adding; “I cannot appoint until Parliament has given me the authority to do so.”

NRM members ignorantly killing the party in Busoga – NEC Member

PLEASE RETIRE: NRM party National chairman, Yoweri Kaguta. Museveni.

During Tufumintirize, a political talk show on the Jinja based 87.7 Baba FM on Wednesday 08 August, 2018, National Executive Committee member of NRM, Hajji Abubaker Walubi accused members in Busoga of fighting and undermining their own party.

Walubi who is also the party chairman for Iganga district said the many bitter in-flights have done a lot of damage to NRM.

He was responding to word that members of his own District Executive Committee (DEC) were supporting independent candidates in the race for Bugweri Woman MP.

“It is true, two of my members of DEC who are supposed to be exemplary are instead fighting NRM in support of people who have quit the party. But of course I doubt whether genuinely one of those is our member,” he said.

Asked how a nonmember go such a big appointment, Walubi said: “Interest groups hold separate elections to get own league leaders. This is how we sometimes end with wrong people getting big positions.”

According to Walubi, the indiscipline of party leaders in the greater Iganga district is eroding the efforts of the top party leadership at organising free and fair primaries.

“There is need to build cohesion in the NRM. It is time to work together. Leaders should stop conflicts and embark on working for the party,

“But because our members especially the youth lack mentorship they have no respects for the superiors. Because, how could someone on a district exexutive belittle the secretary general?,” wondered Walubi.
