Stella Nyanzi arrives at CID Headquarters amid cheers

SCARY ARRIVAL: Dr. Stella Nyanzi arriving at CID headquarters in Kibuli early last month.

Celebrated Makerere University researcher Stella Nyanzi, who was last week summoned by CID for interrogation over her posts on social media, has finally turned up amidst cheers from fans that have been waiting for her since 9am.

Though, she didn’t turn up dressed as many had anticipated.

“Perhaps I will visit my tailor tomorrow and order her to make for me a new tight mini-skirt with the longest slit at the front that will expose my juicy brown-skinned thighs. I will also borrow a tighter wonder-bra from my young sister, to hike up my adult breasts so that the nipples on my tutus are re-modeled to be saluting the CID boys throughout the interview,” Nyanzi wrote.

However, she turned up dressed casually in a red ‘kitengi’.

Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima told media that Dr. Nyanzi is to be interrogated on a case related to Offensive Communication and Cyber Harassment.

“This women’s month, the interrogators at the Criminal Investigations Department are going to poke and prod me about my critique, musings and rantings on my social media platforms. If Janet Kataaha Museveni and her ilk think that threatening me with interrogations will cower me into silence, I laugh at the folly of their dark humour.

Unless these useless powerful women use their might to dig out my voice box and cut off my tongue, I will continue speaking out about the plight they have reduced Ugandans to. And if they crash my voice box and slash out my tongue, I will continue to write and type my critique of their regime’s wanton abuses. Short of killing me, nothing will silence me. Getting a continuous supply of the promised sanitary pads is a lot more useful than CID interrogations,” the outspoken activist and feminist said.

Dr. Nyanzi says the particular post that rubbed the authorities the wrong way is one where she criticized the First Lady, Janet Museveni’s declaration that there was no money to buy sanitary pads for school going girls as earlier promised by her husband, Yoweri Museveni during last year’s presidential campaigns.

Dr. Nyanzi first came to public attention when she took on renowned Professor Mahmood Mamdani, the Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), accusing him of harassment.

In the ensuing scenarios that almost affected the smooth running of the university, Dr, Nyanzi undressed and chained herself to the door of her office, setting off a scene that sent many, including the police to scamper.

Jennifer Musisi will lead to Museveni downfall – Tamale Mirundi

PUT NBS IN TROUBLE: Senior Presidential Advisor on Media and Communication Tamale Mirundi

Acerbic-tongued former presidential spokesmen Joseph Tamale Mirundi has said that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Jennifer Musisi Semakula will lead to the collapse of President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

Without explaining his reasons for making the unsubstantiated allegations, Mirundi was quoted as saying: “Jennifer Musisi is deceptive. Her ways may lead to the downfall of President Museveni.”

However, Mirundi’s utterances seem to suggest that Ms Musisi is hobnobbing with Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, an opposition politician, to the detriment of the sitting National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

“What bonds Lukwago and Jennifer Musisi Kisekka market. They sold it to vendors but I hear Museveni is not happy,” he was quoted as saying while appearing on the NBS TV Morning Breeze talkshow.

Further, according to Mirundi, Ms Musisi is groping in the dark because she has been edged from the limelight by Kampala Minister Beti Olive Kamya.

“Jennifer Musisi should concede defeat to Beti Kamya; if they steal your bride, you don’t go looking for her in the tent,” he said chidingly, adding: “Jenniffer Musisi is acting the way she is because Betty Kamya has stolen her show.”

However, a source said that Mr. Mirundi is fond of attacking Ms. Musisi and Lord Mayor Lukwago because of an grudge he harbours against the two for allegedly ‘disorganizing’ his taxi business.

Meanwhile, known for his ferocious attacks against high profile public servants, Mirundi also said Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) boss had fallen on her own sword, and was now probably on a slippery slope at the tax body over the now infamous Shs6 billion ‘presidential handshake’.

“I remember telling you (NBS programme moderator) that the shillings six billion handshake will displace someone; Akol has been displaced,” he said.

New Travel ban: Somalia, Sudan and Libya on list

NEW ORDER: US President Donald Trump signing the new travel ban

United States President Donald John Trump has signed a revised travel ban banning citizens of six Muslim-majority countries including Somalia, Sudan and Libya from entering the United States.

An earlier ban which affected seven countries was suspended by a federal judge, the result of which is the current one, which is expected to take effect after 10 days.

The 10-day period is believed to be in place to avert some of the chaotic scenes that were seen at US airports after the first ban which was to take immediate effect. The current order has also ‘freed’ Iraq from the ban. Syria, Yemen and Iran complete the latest list.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) last month slammed the earlier order describing it as ‘selective and discriminatory’. The OIC said it was of the view that the ban will further complicate the grave situation that refugees find themselves.

They also held the view that it would only play into the hands of violent terrorists to continue their acts.

‘‘Such selective and discriminatory acts will only serve to embolden the radical narratives of extremists and will provide further fuel to the advocates of violence and terrorism at a critical time when the OIC has been engaged with all partners, including the US, to combat extremism and terrorism in all their forms and manifestations,’‘ an OIC statement read.

OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations. It has 56 other member states across the world. The Gambia is set to host the next summit of the body.

SPLA General announces formation of new rebel group

VOWS TO JOIN WAR TO OVERTHROW KIIR: Former SPLA officer Gen. Thomas Cirillo Swaka

A senior South Sudanese military official who resigned last month said he has formed a new rebel group to fight President Salva Kiir.

General Thomas Cirillo Swaka released a statement declaring himself chairman and commander-in-chief of the National Salvation Front.

It was not immediately clear how strong the group might be, or if it will ally with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO), the rebel group that has battled Kiir’s administration for more than three years.

In Gen. Cirillo’s mission statement he accuses the Kiir administration of seizing power and property for his own Dinka tribe at the expense of other ethnic groups that supported the country’s liberation war against Sudan.

“The Regime has created a highly selfish class that ensures its continued existence for the singular purpose of illicitly amassing personal and family wealth, and imposing tribal hegemony on the country,” it said.

Other sections accused the administration of corruption, failing to provide basic services and neglecting agriculture, the last a major issue in a country where conflict and drought have left millions short of food.

South Sudanese Defense Minister Kuol Manyang Juuk downplayed Cirillo’s accusations, saying they are inconsistent with what he called the government’s progress in implementing an August 2015 peace deal and ongoing work to bring peace to the country.

He said Cirillo’s resignation from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has been blown out of proportion.

“There are so many people in the army so three or four people, they don’t matter,” he said. “The army continues to go on. The place vacated will be filled by those who are there.”

The South Sudan war, which erupted in December 2013, has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than 2 million people from their homes.

Kiir’s government has been promoting a ‘national dialogue’ to resolve the country’s issues, and Manyang said if Cirillo is willing to participate, he [Cirillo] will be given a chance to address his concerns.

Cirillo was active during the liberation war with Sudan and is believed to command respect among his former army colleagues. He held various senior positions in the army and was deputy chief of staff for operations before resigning in February.

Muhammad Ssegirinya: ‘Tell Kamya I am on my way’

I AM ON MY WAY: Kawempe Councillor Muhammad Ssegirinya has threatened Kampala Minister Beti Kamya.

Maverick Kawempe councilor Muhammad Ssegirinya has been out of the country for close to two weeks. Actually, last week’s eviction of traders from Park Yard market didn’t find him in the country. But we can confirm the cantankerous councilor will be in the country by the day’s end, and Kampala Minister Beti Kamya is his ‘first target’ on return.

Ssegirinya being arrested by police

Kamya is the Minister of Kampala, who ordered for the eviction of traders from Park Yard Market. Over 5000 traders were evicted from the market that has been in operation for over three decades.

“Happening now Schiphol Airport Netherlands. Alaba ku Betty (sic) Kamya amugambe nti omusajja ajja (Whoever sees Beti Kamya inform her that I am on my way),” he warned.

FDC to drag tycoon Ham Kiggundu to court over Park Yard

IT IS LIKE THIS: Hamis Kiggundu shows President Museveni documents for the anticipated development of Park Yard market.

Uganda’s biggest opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has threatened to take city businessman, Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, to court.

TO BE SUED: City Tycoon Hamis Kiggundu

Speaking to journalists at the weekly briefing held Monday at their party headquarters in Najjanakumbi, the party’s spokesman Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said they were taking Kiggundu to court over illegal eviction and demolition of Nakivubo Stadium.

He was reacting to last week’s eviction of traders from Park Yard Market and sealing off of Nakivubo stadium. The market was recognised by both the Nakivubo Board of Trustees and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

“Nakivubo is a national property that was put in place by an Act of Parliament and in case it was to undergo redevelopment, the right developer is the government, henceforth as the party, we have to guard the properties of the country,” Semujju said.

To support FDC’s stand on the development of Nakivubo, he gave an example of Shimoni land as part of government land that had been given to private developers only for the land to end up being misused.

Meanwhile, Ham came out at the weekend and defended the eviction of the traders, saying that he demolished the temporary structures at Park Yard ‘to construct a modernised parking’ that he said would be ready next year.

“I have got all the necessary requirements to redevelop Nakivubo stadium. I am ready to take on anybody who isn’t satisfied with my contract. All those parties that are not contented should seek court redress because I am doing this in line with the law. We discussed it with the vendors and they accepted to vacate the land,” he was quoted by the media as saying.

Apparently, Kiggundu says he plans to build a 930-vehicle capacity parking lot with 670 slots for open parking and another 260 slots for under building parking.

In a related, Mr Kiggundu has refuted claims by Butambala MP Muwanga Kivumbi that he is acting as proxy foir trhe First Family

Shs10b for city roads’ naming

HOME OF KCCA: The Authority will soon embark on naming roads in the city

The Kampala Capital city Authority Director of Physical Planning Moses Atwine has today unveiled a US$2.8 million plan by the city authorities to name 2050 roads in the city.

Addressing a press conference at Uganda Media center this morning, Mr Atwine said the money is to kick start the process, and that KCCA expects the public to foot part of the bill by buying plates which will cost between Shs50, 000 and  Shs100, 000.

According to Mr. Atwine, the process is the second phase of the Kampala Infrastructural Institutional Development Programme (KIIDP) whose funding is a loan from World Bank worth US$183 million.

The KCCA supervisor of training of operational guidelines and public awareness Mr Daniel Nuwabiine, said about US$3 million will go to revenue collections.

He said there was a 20% increment in the revenue collection by KCCA in the 2015-2016 financial years, bringing it to Shs15b, and added that the Authority expected to raise, adding that at least Shs112 billion by the end of 2016-2017 financial year.

He attributed the raise to the automation of payment platforms, tax payment sensitisation and accepting of part payment of tax.

Mr Nuwabine said money collected from property rates will be used in road maintenance and construction, garbage collection and other service delivery, adding that about Shs 40 billion is required to boost the current KCCA budget.

Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch back on sale

ON SALE AGAIN: Pop star Michael Jackson at Neverland Ranch

Michael Jackson’s famous Neverland Ranch has returned to the market at a discount price, after failing to find a buyer.

The 2,700-acre (4,218 square mile) property was put on sale for $100m two years ago, but the price has been slashed by a third to $67m (£54m).

Now called Sycamore Valley Ranch, the California property was home to the King of Pop but no longer carries some of its most famous features.

Jackson bought the property in 1988 and added an amusement park and zoo.

The approximately 12,598 square foot French-Normandy style main house is still there, including two master baths, two walk-in cedar-lined closets, a private outdoor garden and four additional bedrooms.

According to real estate website Joyce Rey, the house is “surrounded by manicured lawns, gardens, and magnificent trees, as well as a gorgeous lake with waterfall and swans, boat stops and beach”.

There’s also a 14ft-deep pool, a tennis court, a cellar, a wet bar, a five-bay garage, a movie theatre, a dance studio, barns, corrals, a fire station, five staff houses, a ranch house and a Disney-themed train station with private bedrooms.

The pop star stopped staying at the property after police searched it to investigate allegations of child abuse.

The ranch was acquired after Jackson faced financial troubles in 2008 and put on sale after he died in 2009.

“The initial pricing afforded Colony Capital time to better determine the future of the ranch and today we look forward to this magnificent property being enjoyed by a new curator,” the real estate firm said.

“This quintessential California estate is now ready for the next chapter in its journey.”
