Giovanni Kiyingi to showcase his art at next Blankets and Wine

Ugandan folk singer-songwriter and Afro-fusion multi-instrumentalist, Giovanni Kiyingi, will be one of the acts to look out for during the hugely anticipated 14th Edition of Blankets and Wine happening at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on 25th September, 2016 that will have South African sensation – Mafikizolo as the lead act.

Well known for his multi-instrumentalist skills, Kiyingi plays drums, guitar, harmonica, flute, local Ugandan fiddle (endigidi), conga, adungu (a stringed musical instrument of the Alur people of northwestern Uganda), akogo (finger piano), djembe (rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa), maracas (rumba music shakers) and the calabash.

Kiyingi has performed at major music festivals like the Bayimba International Festival, Pearl Rhythm Festival in Uganda; Santuri Safari Projects Kenyatta University Cultural Exchange, DOADOA, Utam Festival, Sondeka Festival in Kenya and at the Irimba Cultural Festival in Arusha, Tanzania.

Kiyingi has performed alongside veteran artist Harry Lwanga, Kora Award winner Suzan Kerunen, multiple award winner, folk artists Joel Sebunjo, and also with bands like Ssarabi and Afrigo.

With two albums under his belt namely Essanyu Ly’omufilika (Joy of an African) and his latest Akondeere (Trumpets and Hones), he is certainly destined for bigger things.

“Performing on a platform like the 14th Edition of Blankets and Wine is an entirely different audience. So I am putting in more studio time to perform my voice, and polishing up with my instrument selection so that my set can be as invigorating as it will be entertaining. Since I only recently dropped a new album (Akondeere) I will be able to maximize the huge numbers here to raise my flag even higher and gain more recognition,” Kiyingi remarked.

Commenting about the myriad of talent that Blankets and Wine brings to its audiences, Tusker Malt Lager Brand Manager, Alex Tusingwire said that they make it a point to have every edition remarkably different from the other.

“This time round, Mafikizolo as the headlining act are in a league of their own. But regardless, the Ugandan performers too will undoubtedly sizzle. For example Giovanni Kiyingi as a multi-instrumentalist is also a great singer and even better performer. Nkwesunga, one of the songs he performs often is a marvel to listen to. He defines what Tusker Malt Lager and Blankets and Wine stand for.”

Entrance fee is 100,000 UGX at the Lugogo Cricket Oval and gates open at 12:00pm.

Revive district farm institutes – LOP

LOP and other legislators delivering her message during the 2016, Uganda UK Convention.

The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Ms Winfred Kiiza, has called for the revival of district farm institutes and development of agro processing facilities in zones with a comparative production advantage.

“District farm institutes are essential in developing skills, promoting modern technologies and high yielding varieties,” she said.

Speaking at the close of the Uganda UK Convention in London on Friday September 9, 2016, Kiiza said improved accessibility to water for production would provide viable investment opportunities for maximizing agricultural production.

She said consistent and adequate produce was a basis for value addition, food security and creation of employment.

Speaking at the same event, the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, urged Ugandans in the diaspora to extend their funds, skills and experience in the development of Uganda, particularly in agro processing.

Lord Dolar Amarshi Popat, the UK Trade Envoy to Uganda appreciated the bilateral trade between the United Kingdom and Uganda.

“Uganda has become a key economic partner in the region and it is the right time to exploit her utmost potential,” he said.

Convention speakers reinforced the need to address skills and entrepreneurial deficits that are constraining value addition, a necessity for the positive transformation of livelihoods.

The Uganda UK Convention started in 2011 as a trade and investment forum that engages leaders, technocrats, entrepreneurs, institutions and Ugandans in the diaspora in promoting investment opportunities in Uganda.

South Sudan’s Machar and Kirr enriched themselves during war

South Sudan’s political and military elite have made themselves rich while the country has struggled under a civil war of their making, a report says.

Commissioned by actor George Clooney, the document accuses President Salva Kiir, opposition leader Riek Machar, and top generals of profiteering.

It follows the trail of money with links to the families of both Mr Kiir and Mr Machar.

Those named have not yet responded to the allegations.

The report’s authors spent two years collecting evidence and testimony on behalf of a new investigative unit – called The Sentry – which was co-founded by the US actor.

Entitled War Crimes Shouldn’t Pay, the report has found that “top officials ultimately responsible for mass atrocities in South Sudan have at the same time managed to accumulate fortunes, despite modest government salaries”.

“Some have been involved in questionable business deals while others have apparently received large payments from corporations doing business in South Sudan.”

A fall-out between President Kiir and former Vice-President Machar – the most powerful members of their respective Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups – led to the civil war which erupted in December 2013.

Terrible atrocities have been carried out by both sides – often along ethnic lines.

Mass rape has been used as a weapon of war and United Nations reports have detailed human rights abuses.

Some 2.5 million people have been forced from their homes, and millions more need food aid.

When a peace deal between the two men fell apart amid heavy fighting of the streets of the capital Juba in July, any chance of a quick resolution to the crisis crumbled.

“This war is about rival factions of a kleptocratic network trying to gain control of the state,” said JR Mailey, the author of the report by The Sentry, which is a collaboration between The Enough Project, Not On Our Watch, and C4ADS.

It says President Kiir’s wife and at least seven of his children were linked to a whole range of businesses, and has evidence that Mr Kiir’s 12-year-old son had a 25% share in a holding company.

It says a company linked to his brother-in-law, Gen Gregory Vasili Dimitry, supplied fuel to the military while he was a senior officer.

It details business connections between Gen Vasili and the Kiirs, and says that the two families hold interests in almost two dozen companies.

“I was mostly struck by the breadth of sectors in which these top officials are involved,” said JR Mailey, the author of the report.

“We’re talking everything from airlines, to banks, oil companies, mining companies, casinos.

“It seems that a very small number of people control a large swathe of South Sudan’s economy – and many of these people are also the people that are in power,” he said.

Mr Machar is accused of dealing with a Ukrainian arms company through a Russian intermediary with multiple aliases.

“What we found on Vice-President Machar, [he] had been engaged in negotiations to sell the country’s oil production for defence products – for weapons in order to fuel his rebellion,” said Mr Mailey.

“We also found evidence that a nephew of his was involved in a violent and hostile takeover of a security company operating in South Sudan.”

New approach

Among the many details outlined in the report are pictures of luxury villas, said to be owned by politicians and generals in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Australia.

It says both President Kiir and Mr Machar have luxurious homes in the same upmarket neighbourhood of Nairobi.

Mr Clooney and John Prendergast, a human rights activist, have taken a practical interest in Sudan and South Sudan over a number of years.

Their publicity campaign helped pressure the US government to push Sudan towards the peace deal which ended decades of war, led to a referendum on self-determination, and eventually independence in 2011.

Top generals are also implicated in business deals, with large amounts of money going through their bank accounts.

Army chief of staff Gen Paul Malong Awan is accused of having close business connections to President Kiir and his family and having luxury villas.

The report says Deputy General Malek Reuben Riak, and a general sanctioned by the US, Gabriel Jok Riak, had millions of dollars passing through their foreign bank accounts, despite salaries of less than $50,000 (£37,730).

The investigative unit says it tried to get comment from each of those people named in its report – War Crimes Shouldn’t Pay: Stopping the Looting and Destruction of South Sudan.

“The Sentry endeavoured to contact every individual and entity… in most cases they did not respond,” the report said.

It recommends using a “new approach to countering mass atrocities”.

“That involves using the tools of financial pressure that were developed to counter nuclear proliferation and organised crime and terrorism,” said Mr Mailey.

“We want those tools to be deployed aggressively in South Sudan. In the past these sanctions have only been applied in a piecemeal fashion and we think sanctions need to be accompanied by robust anti-money laundering measures,” he said.

An expanded international peacekeeping force for South Sudan is due to help bring a peace deal back on track, but there’s little confidence the crisis – affecting so many millions of people – will be resolved any time soon.

Uganda’s Queen of Katwe premier rocks Toronto International Film Festival

It was all pomp and glamour as the film of a Ugandan chess prodigy has premiered at the 41st Toronto International Film Festival.

The uplifting drama follows Phiona Mutesi who becomes becomes passionate about chess despite of her background.

The film also stars award winning American actress Lupita Nyong’o and actor David Oyelowo.

“It’s a life-affirming African story and as someone of African descent, we don’t see enough of that I believe in cinema, in the press as well so I’m very proud to see a story like this made by Disney as well,” said Oyelowo

“I learned a lot about motherhood. I’m not a mother and yet I had to play a mother and I learned what it takes…. a bit about what it takes to provide for your family and to be concerned about so many people’s well-being. It’s almost like your heart is dislocated and running around and just feeling the fear, inhabiting the fear of a mother letting her chicks out every day to survive,” said Nyong’o.

Based on the novel, The Queen of Katwe, the Disney film explores the story on Mutesi who is said to have overcome challenges through playing this skillful game.

“I just can’t believe it right now that there’s a movie about me and a story. I just can’t believe it because when I look at myself, I’m just a person from nowhere and now I’m coming to this. I can’t believe it. It’s just exciting. I’m just excited, it’s just overwhelming me,” said Mutesi.

The movie which has largely been shot in Uganda has been directed by Mira Nair a Ugandan filmmaker based in the US.

The film will be released on September 23.

Bobi Wine tips Kiwanda on how to attract tourists than using ‘Rolex’

Bobi Wine, photo credit, The Observer.

Uganda’s showbiz is never out of controversy. If it’s not musicians fighting over who is bigger, or over who has stolen another’s song then it would have to be about a musician’s nudes leaking.

But that has been in the previous years. This year, however, the controversy is over the sale of the Uganda National Cultural Center popularly known as the National Theater.

The news of the sale-off of the historical building to a private developer has seen artistes unite for the first time. They are against the giveaway of the theater to a private developer. Among those very vocal about the giveaway of the theater is President Yoweri Museveni die-hard fan, Anne Kansiime. The other is Phillip Luswata, who has been acting at the theater for over 20 years.

Protesting over the sale of theater landed him in jail last week, though he was later released.

The latest artiste to join the fight against the giveaway is the ‘Ghetto President’, Bobi Wine, who met his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi at the theater, where both had gone to act.

“To our Minister of Tourism Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda, arts and culture are a much more effective way of promoting our country’s tourism sector rather than ‘Rolex’ because Chapati is Indian bread and eggs are not exclusively Ugandan, In my opinion the art of rolling them together wouldn’t be reason for any tourist to come and see,” he writes.

“Preserve the Uganda National Cultural Centre #NationalTheatre and you will see more of this or better still, promote arts and culture at all levels.”

Despite the protests, Janat Mukwaya, the Minister for Gender Labour and Social Development said last week that the government is going to continue with its plan to develop the Uganda National Cultural Centre commonly known as the National Theatre.

The ministry recently unveiled blue prints of a 22 storage building to be built before the 3rd edition of the East African Community Arts and Culture Festival also known as the JAMAFEST that is scheduled to be held in Uganda come 2017. The building is supposed to sit on the National Theatre land which the artists disagree with saying it’s a fraud staged by government.

The National Theater is among the buildings in Uganda listed by UNESCO. UNESCO advocates for the preservation of all buildings that were built before 1969.
