Uganda Waragi’s exciting ‘Cocktails in the Wild’ headed for Lake Mburo

This upcoming weekend, Uganda Waragi in partnership with Roundbob will be sponsoring a unique cocktail event known as ‘Cocktails in the Wild’.

This experience is targeted at encouraging Ugandans to venture out and explore their country in bid to grow the tourism industry in Uganda.

Roundbob, an online tour and travel company, has organized the two-day venture dubbed ‘Cocktails in the Wild’ where participants will enjoy a road trip to Lake Mburo National Park, wildlife and a Uganda Waragi sponsored overnight cocktail party.

“This trip is about giving Ugandans an unforgettable party experience. There could be no better venture than this partnership for Uganda Waragi which has for the last 50 years embraced the passion for celebrating the spirit of Uganda. UG is famously known as The Spirit of Uganda that has over the years taken a leading role in bringing people together. We are doing it yet again!” said Rhona Namanya, the Uganda Waragi Brand Manager.

According to David Gonahasa, the Managing Director of Roundbob, this trip has been organized to encourage the ordinary Ugandan to go out, explore and appreciate Uganda. “We want Ugandans to go and see Uganda, and to appreciate the beauty that lies in our backyard before venturing out to outside countries to appreciate their beauty there. Even charity begins at home.” He added that this experience will be different from the familiar bar partying that Ugandans are accustomed to today.

Participants in the experience will get a chance to wild game like Zebras, Impala, Elands, Warthogs, Buffalos, Hippos in Lake Mburo National Park all with a cocktail in hand.

Gonahasa had this to say about partnering with Uganda Waragi on this experience, “We are excited to be partnering with Uganda Waragi on this trip as a true testament to the great Ugandan Brand it is. We would encourage other Ugandan brands to take part in such initiatives that seek to redefine the Ugandan story.”

Ug

Uganda Waragi, with the UG Mixology Initiative recently innovated ’50 ways to drink you UG’ that offers consumers the best chance of enjoying The Spirit of Uganda. UG’s signature cocktails, Kololo Sunset and Muyenga Sunrise together with UG’s newest flavors, coconut and coffee will make ‘Cocktails in the Wild’ even more exciting.

“UBL is committed to delivering the ultimate drinking experience to the consumers who enjoy our spirits. Taking the cocktail experience out of the ordinary bar setting to the wild is the ultimate Uganda Waragi adventure. We encourage all our customers to become part of this wild adventure,” Namanya remarked, adding “However, we continue to remind our consumers to practice responsible enjoyment of our beverages.”

Judiciary ‘to probe’ Besigye ‘tormentor’ Steven Kavuma

Uganda’s Judicial Service Commission has given in to the pressure of former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye and promised to ‘look into’ the suitability of Justice Steven Kavuma serving as a justice of the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court.

Dr Besigye, who is currently incarcerated in Luzira prison on treason charges, alleges that Justice Kavuma is close to the Executive and that his professionalism is compromised.

Dr Besigye, a four-time FDC presidential candidate, recently wrote a wordy letter to the JSC, whose core mandate is to recruit and discipline errant judicial officers, charging that Justice Kavuma is doing the bidding of President Yoweri Museveni, the appointing authority.

Judicial Service Commission has received a complaint against Deputy CJ Kavuma,” Judiciary spokesman Solomon Muyita told NBS TV on Monday. “It will be looked into.”

JSC Secretary Mr Kagole Kivumbi, also confirmed receipt of Dr Besigye’s complaint against Justice Kavuma.

“JSC currently has no chair but the public can still lodge complaints. Once we have a chair, they will be handled,” Mr Muyita supplemented.

“If anyone is unhappy about the outcome, they should appeal. That is why we have an appeal system.

“The judiciary is open. That’s why we allow cameras into courts for live coverage.

Deputy Uganda Chief Justice Steven Kavuma
Deputy Uganda Chief Justice Steven Kavuma

Mr Besigye’s troubles with Justice Kavuma reached boiling point at the beginning of May this year when the Judge made an ex parte order placing an interim ban on the FDC’s ‘defiance’ activities.

However, Dr Besigye contends that Article 43 of the Constitution only limits one from enjoying his rights if it is in the public interest.

He also termed as ‘very strange’, a decision by Justice Kavuma to bar the magistrate at Kasangati court from ruling on whether his confinement at his residence in Kasangati by police, was legal.

Justice Kavuma is no friend to some opposition politicians who accuse him of bias and last year Gerald Karuhanga, then Western Youth MP, tried to sue President Museveni insisting that he illegally appointed Justice Kavuma  on March 5, the same day Mr Museveni also named Bart Katureebe chief justice.

Justice Kavuma has also once come under attack when, sitting as a single judge, he  on March 31, 2014, issued an order against Lord mayor Erias Lukwago’s reinstatement to office, which was issued by the High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe.

Until his appointment, Kavuma had led the judiciary for two years both as acting chief justice and acting deputy chief justice. His leadership was attacked in court, in speeches and through a lawyers’ boycott.

Heartbroken Messi retires from international football

Lionel Messi has said his international career is over at the age of 29 after he blazed a penalty over the bar in Argentina’s defeat in the Copa América final to Chile.

The Argentina captain missed his spot-kick in the decisive shootout at Met Life Stadium, which Chile went on to win 4-2 and secure a second Copa crown in two years, and was disconsolate on the pitch after the game. “It’s tough, it’s not the time for analysis,” he said. “In the dressing room I thought that this is the end for me with the national team, it’s not for me. That’s the way I feel right now, it’s a huge sadness once again and I missed the penalty that was so important.

“I tried so hard to be [a] champion with Argentina. But it didn’t happen. I couldn’t do it. I think it’s best for everyone, for me and for many people who want it. The choice for me is over, it is a decision. I tried many times [to be a champion] but did not.”

Sergio Agüero and other Argentina players could now follow Messi’s lead, with the Manchester City forward telling Olé: “The likelihood is that Messi is not the only one that will leave the national team. There are several players like me that are evaluating whether or not to continue.

“One doesn’t want to think about it but at times, there are things that happen and the thought [of retiring] comes into your mind. Afterwards, it’s difficult to get it out. Unfortunately, the one that leaves most affected is Leo Messi after his penalty miss. This is the worst that I’ve seen him in the changing room. We are all affected and we will try to think about something else and move forward. Again, luck was not on our side.”

The defeat continued Argentina’s 23-year trophyless run and Messi’s own personal misery now extends to four lost finals with the national side – at the 2014 World Cup against Germany and at three Copa Américas, in 2007, 2015 and now 2016.

Argentina coach Gerardo Martino said: “The burden of the consecutive games [lost] has been accumulating these last two years. He feels like you would expect a player to feel after playing and losing a final.”

Messi had enjoyed another impressive outing in the latest final of his international career but failed to find a finishing touch over 120 minutes of play. Still, few would have expected him to miss from 12 yards after Chile’s Arturo Vidal had seen the first kick of the shootout saved by Sergio Romero. But the Barcelona forward conspired to balloon the ball over the bar and pass up the chance to give his side an early advantage.

Lucas Biglia also missed for Argentina with his penalty being saved by Messi’s Barcelona team-mate Claudio Bravo, before Chilean midfielder Francisco Silva scored the decisive spot-kick.

Messi, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, was representing his country for the 112th time since making his debut in 2005 as an 18-year-old.

In that time he scored 55 times, including five this tournament. He surpassed Gabriel Batistuta’s all-time leading mark of 54 for Argentina with a superb free-kick in last week’s semi-final against the US.

“Messi’s numbers are unparalleled and I think they’ll remain that way forever, because it’s impossible for a football player to do what Messi has done,” said Juan Antonio Pizzi, the Chile coach who is from Argentina. “My generation can’t compare him to [Diego] Maradona that’s for my generation, because of what Maradona did for Argentine soccer. But I think the best player ever played today here in the United States.”

Immediately after Sunday’s shock announcement, goalkeeper Romero said he hoped Messi would change his mind. “I think Leo spoke in the heat of the moment because we missed that great chance,” said Romero.

Messi now stands to miss the 2018 World Cup, with the odds of Argentina breaking their long-standing major trophy drought in Russia just having lengthened significantly.

Saudi Arabia warns citizens over recruitment of EA maids

Public Service Minister Wilson Mukasa Muruli

Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry has warned its citizens against travel to Tanzania and Burundi to recruit domestic workers unless all legal measures have been completed and an official recruitment office has been opened.

With the possible exception of Rwanda, the issue of maids suffering at the hands of their employers in the Middle East is a contentious barb between almost all East African countries and the Arab world and mid last year then Uganda Gender and Labour Minister Wilson Mukasa Muruli issued a statement suspending the travel of maids to the ME for employment.

And, in a statement, Mohammed Al-Marool, the director general at the ministry’s Department of Public Relations and Media, said the ministry had been informed by the Foreign Ministry that the authorities in Tanzania and Burundi were investigating some Saudi citizens, accused of human trafficking, illegally recruiting domestic workers and working without a government permit.
“The Interior Ministry urges all citizens to keep themselves abreast of the laws and regulations in other countries,” said the statement.

‘Sudan withdraws troops from border with South’

An image of the joint border between Sudan and its southern neighbour, South Sudan

The Sudanese national army announced that it had completely withdrawn from its joint borders with South Sudan.

This is said to be the first move of its kind between the two countries since the separation of South Sudan in 2011.

The two countries have had hostile relations over the years, with each trading accusations over the alleged support for rebels in their respective nations.

Sudanese Armed Forces spokesman Brig Ahmed Alshami said in a statement that the military had carried out a complete redeployment of its troops out of the safe demilitarized zone between the two countries.

Alshami pointed out that Sudan had also reported the move to the African Union mediation panel headed by the former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

”By now, Sudan can declare that it has completely withdrawn from the joint border with South Sudan,” he added.

Alshami also noted that the withdrawal was consistent with the implementation of decisions of the joint political and security committee between the two countries.

On June 4, the two countries agreed in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to withdraw forces to pave the road for the creation of a demilitarized buffer zone, which would eventually stop the alleged support for rebels in the two countries.

Sudan closed its borders with South Sudan after a brief opening last March, threatening that it would treat more than 200,000 South Sudanese in Sudan as foreigners.

According to an earlier 2012 deal, South Sudan was to pay $9.10 per barrel for oil flowing through Sudan, plus a fee of $15 per barrel to fulfill a $3 billion obligation called the Transitional Financial Arrangement.

David Anthony Kanuma: the guy behind the XZone microphone

IN STUDIO: radio Presenter David Anthony Kanuma

We often hear their voices over the radio, playing us our favorite tunes whilst they talk to us about any various issues in life; they offer an array of anecdotes to the various challenges and mishaps people face. Encouraging several listeners to participate in their talk shows is another proven task, buttressed by their ‘presence’ in your home, car, at work, in the restaurant or the taxi you used during rush hour; they keep you company even when you’re in bed at night. These people called radio presenters make it a point in their lives to keep you entertained; from the daily countdown to the drive through, different radio stations cough up different programmes to keep you and thousands other listeners tuned in. And because of that the radio personality is created forming a special bond with the listener thus creating a fan base for the personality they exude over the air waves. We’ve seen the likes of Seanice Kacungira, Gaetano Kaggwa, James Onen aka Fat Boy, Mackenzie and Bizzle among others and despite their ‘lack of physical interaction’, these people have relied on their voices and diction to make it in life and also make a name for themselves.

However, sitting for hours in a sound-proof room talking to yourself for hours despite the air conditioning (in most cases) can prove to be a bit monogamous if not boring. So, in a bid to decipher the day-to-day lives of a radio personality in their line of work and how best they try to handle whatever this life throws at them, The EagleOnline sought out David Anthony Kanuma, a radio presenter with Xfm. He provided insight.

CHILLING: At home with David Anthony Kanuma
CHILLING: At home with David Anthony Kanuma

People say most radio personalities are two different beings. Does this cause any confusion in your work?

Yes, some radio presenters are two different people or things, for example someone might be a radio presenter and a construction engineer at the same time. And it affects my line of work because sometimes I am required to be online yet there is pending work somewhere else.

People often confuse DJs and radio presenters; why is that and do you find it offensive?

Yeah, people do confuse radio personalities with Djs which is really irritating because not all radio personalities can DJ and yes I do find it offensive because I have to explain to them that its not the same thing.

And how do these professions differ?

Well a Dj is a music ‘mixologist’ who selects music according to BPMs(beats per minute) and a radio presenter does not select the music. But he/she is responsible for the content that the listeners get to listen to.

So you have to play whatever is already selected on the playlist before engaging your listeners. Isn’t that frustrating? Wouldn’t you rather play something of your own choice?

Yes, I have to play what is already scheduled in the system. I would love to put in my songs as well but rules are rules. But luckily enough all the music played in the system is ‘today’s hit music.’

Have you always thought about working in radio all your life?

It has crossed my mind a lot and I wouldn’t mind doing it all my life; I love it and not many people get this opportunity of waking up everyday to do what they love all their lives.

How long have you been at is and how did it come about?

After University, finding a job was a hustle (laughs). So, I have a few friends at Xfm, Libolo Chaii and Rudende who encouraged me to come out and try out for radio. At first I was afraid but they pushed me and I did eventually try it out and the station manager by then was Ssiima (Sabiti) who liked my voice and put me on probation for a while until I was given a show and the rest is history.

What is so unique about your voice and why do you think you were picked? Was it the accent, the husk or the crisp?

Well to be honest I haven’t yet found out why my voice is unique. However, I think I was chosen for radio because of my passion; every time I go on air I put my heart and soul into it.

Tell me a little about your show(s). What is it about? What happens on your show and how does it impact on your listeners?

Thank you…I host two shows and both are on Saturday. The first show is from 2pm till 4pm, it’s called the X-zone where I basically play latest hits; carry out celebrity interviews and brand new music premieres. The second one starts at 7pm to 12am with DJ Ali Breezy and it’s called the ‘Party Starter’.

And yes, every time I go on air I want the person listening to say: “This dude is fresh and I love his hour.”

How do you get your news updates? Do you use Google like everyone else or do you guys have a secret means of getting your stuff since its always the latest. How do you get it so quick?

Well, sometimes I do Google things since Google is our best friend these days but I am always reading and researching, be it newspapers, TV, the internet or anything with information I can get my hands on.

God bless Google. I feel you. Did you always want to be a radio presenter or did you dream of something else before radio?

Before radio I wanted to do anything and everything involved with events. I love entertainment, media and music and by God’s grace I am still able to do that when I am not on radio.

Do you consider yourself some sort of entertainer?

Yes I do!

Something tells me to ask you: How do you sit and speak to yourself for hours? Does it not get boring?

I always imagine I am having a conversation with someone in the room even though there is no one there but it helps me and feels good plus it’s not like we speak for hours; a standard link is one minute maximum. It also never gets boring because you can decide to put some sounds (hot keys) in between your links or even background music helps.

And the topics you talk about; are they random or pre-selected as well?

The topics I discuss are not random. I try to find out what is relevant and what our target audience relates to.

Who are your target audience and how long have you been working with radio?

Our target audience is basically people between the ages 18 to 28. So, basically the youth, and I have been working for radio for two years now.

Are there any other skill sets you harbour apart from being a radio presenter?

Yes, off air I’m also the Promotions Officer for Xfm and Urban Tv. I am basically the link between Vision Group marketing and the two brands.

Is being a radio presenter an easier job compared to most 8-5 (day time) jobs?

No. I would say its very demanding but not like most 8-5 jobs. The beauty about it is once your show is done, you have a chance to prepare for your next show and you can go on and do other things as well.

Are there any particular people who inspire you?

Yes, there a re several people I look up to in this industry… Siima Sabiiti is one of them; a very phenomenal radio personality who always pushes herself to be great and Mr Keith Kuyoh, my boss, who is one of the smartest and intellectual marketing managers I have the pleasure of working under.

Are there any particular challenges radio presenters face in the media industry?

Yes, we are in the media all the time and the main challenge is that our private lives off of radio are prone to being also put in the media and some people might take that opportunity to create scandals which damage our images.

You’ve been a radio presenter for two years now, how do you deal with the attention, is it stressful keeping up this image or do you bask in all its glory?

I have managed to acquire a following especially on social media and a loyal fan base. However, I don’t do it for the image, its all about being humble and down to earth and constantly interacting with the fans be it on a social media platform or face to face.

Have there been any mishaps with any one of your fans or have they managed to behave themselves around you this year?

(Laughs)…No mishaps yet and I hope there will be none in the future, but they have managed to behave so far.

Anything you want to leave your listeners mulling about?

Tune in every Saturday from 2pm to $pm for the X-Zone and from 7pm to 12am on 94.8 Xfm. Cheers.

Uganda Cranes to face Egypt, Ghana & Congo in World Cup qualifiers

The Uganda National Football team (The Cranes) has been drawn to face three African football powerhouses in arguably the hardest group ever.

Micho’s charges are in Group E with eternal rivals Ghana, Egypt who they have never beaten at senior level and new giants Congo Brazzaville for the FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia qualification round 3 which were today in Cairo.

Uganda Cranes’ first group matches will be played October 3rd just a  couple of days after facing Comoros in their final 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier at Namboole Stadium. They will end on November 14th 2017which will see the groups winners pick the five tickets reserved for the continent at the World Cup.

It is the final round of qualifying, which follows two previous knockout rounds,

Four big names were drawn together in Group B, with Cameroon, Nigeria and Algeria – who have all been at the past two World Cup finals – placed alongside 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winners Zambia.

Cameroon have appeared at the tournament seven times – more than any other African country – but have suffered in recent years and could struggle in what looks to the toughest of all the groups.

The Indomitable Lions’ last two appearances at the World Cup were a disaster. They lost all three of their group games in South Africa in 2010 and in Brazil four years later.

Algeria, the highest ranked side on the continent, were among the top seeds for the draw, with Nigeria included in the second seeds.

Morocco coach Herve Renard will come up against the side he helped to make African champions last year as he tries to steer his Morocco team past the Elephants, Gabon and Mali.

Meanwhile, neighbours Libya and Tunisia were paired in Group A. Libya’s last international match – against Morocco in June – was hosted by Tunisia because of ongoing security issues in the north African country.

WC

To reach the group stages, Uganda Cranes produced a virtuoso performance to thrash Togo 3-0 and qualify in an exciting match played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in November 2015.

Skipper Geoffrey Massa drew first blood with just five minutes gone with a 20 yard thunderbolt that left Djehani Gussad sprawled on the ground for Cranes’ first goal. Man of the moment Miya was on the mark again completing his brace in stoppage time after Walusimbi’s beautiful cross headed back across goal by Massa for Miya to volley home for Cranes third goal.

Uganda went to the break leading with a comfortable which they held on to the end finishing 4-0 on aggregate to qualify for the group stages.

Newly appointed Minister of Education and Sports, the first lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni will be the chief guest at the upcoming Uganda Premier League awards ceremony at Serena Hotel, Kampala on Friday August 12th, 2016.

This will be the first sports ceremony to be attended by the First Lady since her appointment by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

According to the Uganda Premier League (UPL) chairman, Arinaitwe Rugyendo, Janet has been approached to grace the crowning night as the chief guest and her reps replied affirmatively according to a source.

“We hope to use the occasion to tell her (Janet) the real troubles of football in Uganda.”  Rugyendo revealed.

One of Uganda’s seasoned writers and media entrepreneur who is also one of the founders of Uganda’s leading tabloid Red Pepper, Mr Rugyendo is a close confident of the First Lady and in March 2015 even made his intentions to ‘replace’ Janet as Ruhaama Constituency Parliamentary seat holder before backing out unceremoniously.

The awards

In a press conference held on Thursday at Mandela stadium, Namboole Boardroom, the organizers revealed that the awards are aimed at rewarding best performers from the 2015/2016 Azam Uganda Premier League season besides motivating footballers in the country..

The best senior player of the season to be drawn from KCCA’s Joseph Ochaya, Viper’s Erisa Sekisambu and reigning topscorer Robert Sentongo (URA) will walk away with a price of a brand new car that evening.

Miya Farouk, Robert Ssentogo and Brian Umony are the past winners of the top accolade.

NTV’s Uwitware gives birth to baby boy: find out his name

And a baby makes three!

NTV’s reporter Gertrude Tumusiime Uwitware has given birth to her first child with husband Rodger Ariho.

The two welcomed a baby boy named Junior Ariho early on June 22 in at Norvik Hospital on Bombo Road in Kampala EagleOnline has learned exclusively. Uwitware’s boss also confirmed the exciting news.

“The baby is extremely healthy and is surrounded by friends and family at Norvik,” a source said. “Gertrude and Rodger are ecstatic to be parents.”

The award winning Living Life, Tetenkanya Obulamu and Health Focus reporter has made no secret of the fact that she couldn’t wait to become a mother in past interactions, and gushed about her hopes and dreams for her family in February.

“Oh, my God. I want to be a mother, and I anticipate loving my children quite fiercely,” she shared with a fellow journalist. “I think about it all the time, though it’s a silly thing to think about because the kind of mother I’ll be depends on the kind of children I have. I can’t wait to meet them.”

Born in Kamwokya/Kyebando over 27 years ago,  Uwitware first worked at then struggling Kamwokya-based Record Television in 2009 before she was alerted for a graduate trainees’ program by a relative and current boss Maurice Mugisha (they share a partner grandfather from Kisoro District) to join the Serena based NTV in 2013 where she has cut out her niche as a unique story-teller.

She introduced her man to her family along Entebbe Road last month. Much of the function was conducted in Kifumbira, English, bits of Luganda and many other languages. Unlike the Kiganda kind of introduction where the groom’s entourage is made up of many friends and well-wishers, in the Kifumbira type of introduction, the parents of the boy come along.

Congratulations to the new parents!
