Exiled Eritreans want President Afwerki indicted by ICC

Eritrean demonstrators in Israel

About 2,000 Eritrean migrants demonstrated in central Israel in support of a UN human rights accusation of Eritrean leaders for crimes against humanity.

The protesters, some of who called for the indictment of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, gathered outside the headquarters of the European Union’s delegation in Ramat Gan near the coastal city of Tel Aviv to show support for the report published on June 8.

According to the UN report, between 300,000 to 400,000 people have been in slavery in the country in the past 25 years.

Meanwhile, UN human rights investigators accused the Eritrean leaders of crimes against humanity, including torture, rape, murder and enslaving hundreds of thousands of people.

ā€œAtrocities had been committed since the country’s independence in 1991 and were continuing,ā€ the U.N. Commission of Inquiry said in the report that was immediately rejected by the government.

According to the UN agency, Eritrea’s poor treatment of its own people has motivated many thousands to flee the country.

If indicted Afwerki will become the second African sitting Head of State to face ICC sanctions after Sudanese President Omar Bashir, who is accused of genocide and war crimes in his country’s western region of Darfur.

AU peace team in Burundi

Burundi's former President Domitien Ndayizeye addresses #PSC in Bujumbura; reiterates need for inclusive dialogue.

A delegation of the Peace and Security Department of the African Union Commission (AUPSD) is in Burundi for a three-day peace mission to assess the security situation in the country.

On their arrival, theĀ AUPSDĀ met with stakeholders of Burundi’s peace process to analyze the situation and find a lasting solution to its problems.

According to a source the mission is expected to meet also with the head of state Pierre Nkurunziza. During the three-days, theĀ PSCĀ will also have consultations with government bodies, the opposition and civil society organisations.

Led by the Permanent Representative of the Congo to the AU, Lazare Makayat Safuesse, the mission met with Burundi’s former President Domitien Ndayizeye who reiterated the need for inclusive dialogue.

The peace mission of the AU Peace and Security Council follows that of February embarked upon by five African heads of state to the country.

TheĀ AUPSDĀ during the crisis in Burundi had advocated for the sending of 5,000 men to end the cycle of violence. This recommendation was not agreed upon by the summit of heads of state in January after vehement rejection by the Burundi government.

Burundi was plunged in a serious crisis when President Nkurunziza announced his candidacy in April 2015 for a third term before he was re-elected in July. The violence claimed more than 500 lives and forced more than 270,000 Burundians in exile.

Etihad Airways wins prestigious global award

Following a string of recent awards for its funding activities and treasury practice, Etihad Airways has swept top honours at the Treasury Today Adam Smith Awards in London.

Etihad Airways’ treasury team collected the highest honour, winning the Top Treasury Team Award for overall excellence. The team also picked up the awards for Best Financing Solution and Best Cash Management Solution.

Winning the Top Treasury Team Award, against a field of strong international competition, Etihad Airways’ Treasury Department was recognised for its innovative transformation and centralisation programmes that have made an outstanding contribution to the airline.

Presented at a gala luncheon in The City of London’s historic Gibson Hall, the awards were collected by Ricky Thirion, Etihad Airways’ Group Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer, Adam Boukadida.

James Hogan, Etihad Aviation Group President and Chief Executive Officer, said: ā€œInnovation is at the heart of everything we do at Etihad Airways. These latest awards are a testimony to the talent in our finance team. Our strategy is clear and finance is a core enabler of that strategy – a business model that focuses on organic growth and minority investments in airlines around the world. Our equity partner strategy is creating a total which is greater than the sum of its parts, a grouping working together to improve revenues, reduce costs and uncover exciting new business synergies.ā€

James Rigney, Etihad Aviation Group Chief Financial Officer, said: ā€œThe performance of our treasury team this last year has been remarkable. These highly coveted awards, especially the team of the year award, are very well deserved. The success they have had is a catalyst for Etihad Aviation Group’s plans for further growth and investment.ā€

Angela Berry, Co-founder and Group Publisher at the Treasury Today Group, said: ā€œThe Adam Smith Awards are the ultimate industry benchmark for achievement in corporate treasury, Etihad Airways is to be congratulated for sweeping so many of this year’s awards.ā€

The Best Financing Solution Award was in recognition of the landmark Etihad Airways Partners’ (EAP) US$700 million debt capital markets transaction completed in September 2015. Seen as the first joint financing deal of its kind in the airline industry, the ground-breaking transaction was aimed at funding EAP’s expansion. A further US$500 million has since been raised in a second transaction completed last month – reflecting the financial markets’ continued confidence in the Etihad Airways Partners story.

The implementation of an innovative global cash management solution that unlocked liquidity, introduced cost savings, and allowed Etihad Airways to manage, control and report global cash centrally, was recognised with the Best Cash Management Award. The new solution brought about greater economies of scale, increased operational efficiency, enhanced financial returns and immediate solutions to local needs across the airline’s worldwide operations.

The second week of the sensitisation of stakeholders in the Partner States has commenced and will see EALA Members continue with its outreach to regional stakeholders.Ā  The sensitisation activities which run up to the back-end of next week are themed:ā€EAC Integration Agenda: Accessing the Gainsā€.

In Uganda the Members met a number of stakeholders, with the country’s chapter’s outreach programme including courtesy calls on cabinet ministers and high ranking government officials.

During the meeting with Mr Otafiire the highlights of discussions focused on strengthening integration in readiness for the political federation, with the Minister assuring the legislators that the region was fully committed to the integration dispensation.

The EALA Chapter led by Hon Nusura Tiperu also met with the Minister for Trade, Hon Amelia Kyambadde where both parties agreed that Partner States need to ensure standardization of goods and to create an environment that facilitates trade. The legislators then paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Finance, Hon. Mattia Kasaijja and other parastatals.Ā  The EALA Members were joined by a section of their colleagues from the Burundi chapter.

Meanwhile, in Kigali, the EALA Chapter led by the Chairperson Hon Patricia Hajabakiga, held an interactive session with representatives and the membership of the Private Sector Federation (PSF) Rwanda led by the Chief Executive officer, Stephen Ruzibiza.

The PSF members urged EALA to ensure the total and complete elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers on the corridors especially the Northern Corridor.Ā  Last year, EALA enacted the EAC Elimination of NTBs Bill 2015 and the piece of legislation is currently undergoing assent in the Partner States.

The sensitisation and outreach programs of the Assembly in the Republics of Kenya, Burundi and the United Republic of Tanzania were also on course.

This is the second phase of the outreach programme following a successful phase held in the Partner States in April 2016.Ā  The three-week activity hopes to sensitise EAC citizens on the overall integration process and to promote liaision with key stakeholders in the process.

Stakeholders include representatives of local Government associations, and Universities and learning institutions. Other stakeholders are media, Parliaments, women and youth councils, the Private Sector and the women and youth organisations.

Sensitisation is a key component of EALA’s work.Ā  The EALA Strategic Plan (2013-2018) envisages a people-centred approach to widening and deepening of the integration agenda.

UN South Sudan peacekeepers to be reprimanded over camp attack

An unspecified number of peacekeepers from Rwanda, Ethiopia and India could be headed home soon after the United Nations accused them of Ā ā€˜lack of responsiveness’ during a bloody attack on a UN-run camp in South Sudan in February.

UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous acknowledged today that an investigation had found ā€˜inadequacies’ in peacekeepers’ response when gunmen in military uniform stormed the camp in the northeastern town of Malakal on February 17 and 18, firing on civilians and setting shelters ablaze.

The attack on the camp, where about 48,000 people were sheltering, left at least 40 dead and 123 wounded.

Nearly 20,000 people lost their homes after they were torched by the attackers based on the occupants’ tribal affiliation.

“There was a lack of responsiveness by some, a lack of understanding of the rules of engagement by some,” said Ladsous, who refused to single out any individuals.

“I will not name names but there will be repatriations of units and of individual officers.”

At the time of the attack, the peacekeeping force was made up of contingents from Ethiopia, India and Rwanda.

“I can assure you that there will be a follow-up as there has been in other theatres of operation,” Ladsous said.

Initial findings of an internal UN investigation found that “there was confusion with respect to command and control” and “a lack of coordination among the various civilian and uniformed peacekeepers” during the attack.

A UN military official in Malakal said that Ethiopian peacekeepers had abandoned their postsĀ during the attack.

The same official said that the peacekeeping contingent from Rwanda had asked, in writing, for permission to fire their weapons as the base came under attack, even though peacekeepers are licensedĀ to use force to protect civilians.

Many of those who sought shelter at the UN site in Malakal arrived shortly after Sudan’s civil war began in December 2013 after President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar, who he had sacked earlier that year, of plotting a coup.

Civil war broke out when soldiers from Kiir’s Dinka ethnic group disarmed and targeted troops of Machar’s Nuer ethnic group. Machar and commanders loyal to him fled, and tens of thousands of people died in the civil war that followed.

A peace agreement signed in August collapsed and fighting continues in many parts of the country, despite both leaders joining a unity governmentĀ two months ago.

The attack in Malakal threatens to deepen the conflict further. Leaders of the Shilluk ethnic group, the third largest tribe in the country who hail from Malakal, say that if they are not given their land back, fighting could ensue.

Kenyatta signs anti-doping law

ORDERED DEPORTATION?: Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mr Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya was now waiting for the World Anti-Doping Agency to declare it compliant with its rules – a move which will open the way for Kenyan athletes to take part in the Olympic Games in Brazil in August.

ā€œKenya has always supported clean sport and will continue to do so,” he added.

Kenya, an athletics giant, missed two Wada deadlines to show it is tackling cheating in sport. The country won 11 medals at the London 2012 Olympics and topped the table at the World Championships in Beijing last year with 16 medals.

But the country has become mired in doping and bribery allegations, with more than 40 athletes failing drugs tests since 2011. Wada placed it on a “watch list” of nations at risk of breaching its code and gave it until April 5 to comply.

Kibaki appointed UNESCO Special Envoy

A certificate for the appointment was presented to him on Wednesday at his private office in Nairobi by Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who picked it up on his behalf in Paris, France.

Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has formally started work as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Special Envoy for Water in Africa.

A certificate for the appointment was presented to him on Wednesday at his private office in Nairobi by Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who picked it up on his behalf in Paris, France.

The former Head of State welcomed the appointment and stressed the need for stakeholders in the water sector to work together to realise effective management of the resources in the continent.

ā€œWater has been the source of numerous inter-community and trans-border conflicts in Africa. It is therefore imperative that the office of the Special Envoy promotes the cause of water for peace and people’s development in Africa,ā€ Kibaki stated.

The former President expressed hope that the initiative will ensure proper water governance processes in Africa.

ā€œIn discharging the mandate of UNESCO’s Special Envoy for Water in Africa, we recognise the role of the African governments, the private sector, citizens of each African country, and international partnerships. We are keen to work closely with all relevant institutions in the water sector in Africa,ā€ he said.

He noted that progress in the sector will unlock Africa’s potential for faster job-creation, poverty eradication, and socio-economic growth and development.

ā€œAs you may be aware, water has been the source of numerous inter-community and trans-border conflicts in Africa. It is therefore imperative that the Office of the Special Envoy promotes the course of water-for-peace and people’s development in Africa,ā€ he said.

Wamalwa described the appointment as a breakthrough in creating the much needed awareness of the scarce commodity not only in the region but in the whole continent.

ā€œThis objective to be achieved through expansion and construction of water supply schemes in urban and rural areas will ensure that all Kenyans are better served,ā€ he said.

ā€œHis Excellency Mwai Kibaki’s role will among other goals entail drawing attention of Heads of State of governments and civil societies to the importance of sustainable management of the available water resources,ā€ he explained.

Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya who was also present assured Kibaki of governors’ support in all the counties.

ā€œMay I on behalf of the Council of Governors pledge my support. We would like to work closely with you in pushing this agenda of making water accessible to everybody in Africa a reality and water provision being largely a devolved function, we think your appointment will give that agenda impetus as we continue in this struggle of realising the dream of everybody,ā€ he said.

UNESCO Regional Director Mohammed Djelid called for stronger cooperation among all water actors in the continent in order to tackle various challenges affecting water management in Africa.

He noted that his organisation was ready to work with all partners to see that water issues were effectively managed in the continent.

The function was attended by other key players in water matters including the Millennium Water Alliance, Water Services Trust Fund and diplomats among others

Major EMBOLO blow to Manchester United amid Schalke rumours

Manchester United are reportedly set to miss out on FC Basel striker Breel Embolo, with the youngster said to be close to signing for Schalke 04.

That’s according to GianlucaDiMarzio.com (translated by David Amoyal), which has stated that a deal for the forward will be done ā€œrapidlyā€ after the Bundesliga side jumped ahead of the Red Devils and RB Leipzig in pursuit of Embolo.

Whitney also cited Dirk g. Scharlmann of Sky Sport, who reported the player rejected the offer on the table from the Red Devils.

Embolo is considered among the finest talents in the game and has afforded the continent a glimpse into his ability with some sharp cameos at the UEFA European Championship. He started Switzerland’s last game against France, as the team secured their spot in the knockout stages of the competition.

The Switzerland international certainly possesses all the raw tools to go a long way in the game. He’s been dynamic, skilful and capable of operating in a number of positions across the front line for Basel and his national team. He has an eye for goal too, with 10 netted in each of the last two league seasons.

It’s easy to see why United would be keen, as he’d fit in well with the club’s forward options. Like Embolo, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are vibrant young talents who can cause chaos in the final third. They all need guiding and refining, but the potential is there for each of them to become a world-class player.

As noted by Tom Coast of Sport Witness, with Martial operating on the left and Rashford through the middle, Embolo could take up a familiar berth on the right flank

However, at a club like United, there would be a lot of expectation on the youngster, not to mention a fair chance of him not featuring frequently, especially under a manager like Jose Mourinho, who values experience in his starting XI. At Schalke, it’s likely he’ll play a key role.

The focus will not be relentlessly trained on the youngster at the Veltins Arena as it would be at a true juggernaut of the European game. Under new manager Markus Weinzierl there will be expectations, but they will not be too lofty and thus allow Embolo’s game to develop naturally.

Schalke seem to be building an exciting side for the 2016-17 campaign, too. Alex Chaffer of DW Sports has been impressed with the business they’ve conducted under sporting director Christian Heidel.

Of course, there are green facets to Embolo’s game that need to be worked on, most notably his touch, decision-making and work rate. However, he’s shown he can be a big threat at the elite level, and provided he continues to develop as anticipated, he can become an elite forward.

United will be disappointed if the teenager has chosen to further his career elsewhere, as the Red Devils are always in for the most exciting attacking talent around. The club certainly aren’t short of sprightly strikers ready to take the Premier League by storm next season, though.
