How Entebbe International Airport is being used as drug trafficking point

The drug traffickers across the globe are using Entebbe Airport as a transit point to move drugs from different parts of the world to Japan, China and India.

According to Entebbe Airport security sources, the drugs come from Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Afghanistan and enter Africa through various entry points and end up in Uganda before they are transported to Asia.

“The biggest market is in Japan and India and other eastern Asian countries. These drugs enter Uganda as cargo or unescorted luggage,” a security source told Eagle Online in an exclusive interview in May.

According to security sources at Entebbe, the drug traffickers are using Mozambique, Ghana and Somalia to move the drugs into Africa and later move to Entebbe Airport and possibly to other airports in Africa.

These countries have coastal waters which the drug dealers probably use easily to connect from South America and be able to enter Africa. With exception of Ghana, Mozambique and Somalia are also experiencing instabilities which have disabled the states in these two countries to manage and control security along the coastal lines.

” The perpetrators can send the cargo a day before and for them they arrive the following day with collaboration with their contacts in Uganda that help to keep the ‘unclaimed’ cargo” the security operative said.

A security operative who has been involved in the operation to arrest some traffickers says the perpetrators bribe the airport security to enter Uganda.  “They even use Clearing agents to move these drugs. It’s a well syndicated racket that involves different players in national security,” he said.

The security agencies operating at the airport include; police, Immigration, Internal Security Organisation, Military intelligence, External Security operatives and Aviation security.

For example, in February a joint team of Internal Security Organisation and Police arrested two Indian men Balvir Singh and Nadeem Ullah after trafficking 62 kilograms of Cocaine to India as cargo but the Indian police managed to impound the drugs in New Delhi.

The drugs were impounded by the Indian police in an operation code named Black and White before the New Delhi police communicated with their Ugandan counterparts to arrest Balvir and Ullah who have been disguising as businessmen dealing in exporting fruits.

A police CID officer based at the Airport confirmed the arrest of the two Indians who are now battling a court case at Entebbe Magistrates Court.  ” It’s true, they are facing charges,” she said.

Police are also investigating reports that an international courier company which we cannot name for using its stores in Namanve to store these drugs before they are moved to Asia.

When drugs enter Uganda, the perpetrators pay some Ugandans to take the risk of transporting these drugs to the chosen destinations. ” Each transporter is paid 10,000 to 15,000 dollars and that’s why there are many Ugandans in prisons in China and India.

By the end of last year, there were 40 Ugandans in Indian prisons and 30 are in China with some on death row for trafficking drugs.

Some of these drug traffickers have either married female Uganda police officers or their relatives in order to get protection or information.

In March the Airport police burst a drug trafficking racket involving one of their own and immigration officials. The police seized a consignment of 9.8 kilograms of cocaine on March 1, 2023, whose destination is yet to be established.

The consignment had been cleared by security and immigration staff, disguised as coffee packets, according to Airport security sources. As a result, Denis Mugabi Mwamba, an immigration officer, Dan Banan, an Internal Security Officer, Caroline Orishaba, an immigration assistant, and police constable No 46879 PC Florence Awino were arrested in connection with the incident.

The drugs were being trafficked by Nigerian national Raphael Pius Madu who was traveling on Passport No B0041124.

#Covid-19 infection forces Museveni to delegate power

President Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has delegated the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to officiate Heroes Day celebrations which will take place tomorrow at Kasaala Catholic Parish Grounds in Butuntumula Sub-County in Luwero District as he goes into self-isolation.

Yesterday Museveni revealed that in the morning, he noticed some mild flu-like symptoms which forced him to call doctors to assess the condition and one of the PRCs was positive.

Museveni has been very cautious with coronavirus, as seen severally putting on masks, but due to allergy he stopped wearing them.

“After the very useful interactive retreat in Kyankwanzi, I was already immersed in the activities in Kampala. However, on Tuesday, I started experiencing mild flu-like symptoms. I ignored the feeling and had my meetings in Entebbe as well as working on my voluminous State of the Nation Address,” Museveni revealed.

“Yesterday morning, however, I noticed some mild flu-like symptoms in one of the nostrils (the right one). That is when I called my doctors to take samples and rule out Corona. They took three samples- one rapid and two PCRs. The rapid one was negative and so was one of the PCRs.” he said.

He said one of the PCRs was positive. Taking precautionary measures, he traveled to Kololo, with a separate car from Mama’s car as the samples were taken back for reconfirmation. When he came back from Kololo, it was confirmed that he had Corona.

Museveni applauded security forces for blocking all the terrorist activities and ensuring that the huge celebrations (like those of the 3rd of June), took place without incident in spite of the terrorists operating in Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique, etc.

“As everybody knows, I have been very cautious with Corona. However, recently, I had to give up masks because they have been causing me allergic reactions in the eyes and also in the throat. Do you remember when I lost my voice twice during the elections? That is part of the allergy,” he said.

“I have, therefore, got the second forced leave in the last 53 years, ever since 1971, when we started fighting Idi Amin. One other time was when I had a sinus problem and I had to lie low for some days at Mweya,” he added.

Museveni has therefore, delegated the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to lead the Heroes Day celebrations slated for tomorrow in Luwero.

“I have therefore, self-isolated at Nakasero and I have delegated my work for today and tomorrow (Heroes’ Day in Luwero) to Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanjja,” he said.

Museveni however, assured the country that by God’s Grace all is well, and he is only experiencing mild symptoms. Adding, “I always prefer to err on the side of caution and self-isolate for now.”

Why opposition MPs snubbed state of the Nation Address

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP) Mathias Mpuuga

The opposition legislators led by their leader in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga have snubbed the State of the Nation Address at Kololo ceremonial grounds.

The MPs were protesting the continuous #Covid-19 testing despite the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) declaration of an end of the pandemic as a public health emergency.

“Our Cabinet noted that more than Shs6 billion is going to be lost in #Covid-19 tests for both State of the Nation Address and Budget Speech yet WHO declared an end to #Covid-19 as a global health emergency,” Mpuuga said.

Mpuuga said the State of the Nation Address which marks the opening of the third session of the 11th Parliament of Uganda, will attract more than 2,000 people including MPs and guest will cost over Shs3 billion and therefore, we resolved that they will miss the both the state of the nation address and the budget speech.

He urged that in the coming budget for financial 2023/24, the government will borrow more that Shs6 trillion, but at the same time, government is misusing funds yet there are other critical sectors which were given less money.

He said #Covid-19 testing exercises are given to various individuals connected to the first family and the state house.

“President Museveni and his family should receive #Covid-19 booster doses as per WHO recommendations, to enhance their immunity and alleviate concerns about the virus and increase social distancing measures during his interactions, aligning with WHO guidelines.” He said.

He proposed that Museveni should minimize physical meetings and resort to video conferencing platforms like Zoom just as he did during the #Covid-19 pandemic.

Dfcu bank urges SMEs to incorporate sustainable business practices

Dfcu bank has urged SMEs to incorporate sustainable practices in their business plans so as to protect the environment and attract funding.   Speaking during a training workshop for over 150 SMEs in Kampala on Tuesday, 06 June 2023, Josephine Mukumbya, the Managing Director of Agribusiness Development Centre, emphasized the value of SME readiness in terms of government relations and funding opportunities.   Mukumbya emphasized the need for SMEs to adopt sustainable practices that minimize their impact on the environment on top of striving to create inclusive work environments and prioritizing the well-being of their employees, ultimately making a positive impact on society.   Earlier this year, dfcu Bank in collaboration with ADC and GOPA Worldwide Consultants committed to skill 200 SMEs under the ongoing Business Accelerator Program (BAP). The training is to help attendees (SMEs), to understand the factors that affect the sustainability and future performance of their organizations. The training comprises 150 SMEs in several sectors including Agribusinesses, Manufacturing, processors and hospitality among others.   The new ESG module will be incorporated in the BAP curriculum being implemented by ADC and fully sponsored by dfcu.   Martin Birungi, responsible for projects at Besepo Ug Limited, shared his journey. Besepo initially operated primarily as a lumbering company. However, they soon realized the alarming rate at which forests were being depleted, prompting them to initiate a reafforestation program.   Besepo said he made a strategic decision to convert their waste materials like offcuts, branches, and sawdust from timber production, into briquettes. Briquettes not only contribute to the reduction of charcoal consumption, but also provide an alternative source of clean energy.   Jimmy Byaruhanga, the GOPA Representative, highlighted the impact of the program on SMEs, as evidenced by numerous testimonials.   “The program plays a vital role in assisting SMEs in obtaining certifications from UNBS and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO),” he said.   Byaruhanga urged SMEs to take the time to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors that may hinder their access to finance, emphasizing the importance of implementing an ESG strategy. By incorporating sustainable practices into their operations, SMEs can be more competitive.   Ronald Kasasa, the Head of Business Banking at dfcu, emphasized their commitment to ESG principles. It is expected that businesses comply with the ESG standards, and in case of any shortcomings, measures must be taken to rectify the issues within a specified timeframe to get funding.   Ronald Kasasa, the Head of Business Banking at dfcu, emphasized their commitment to ESG principles. “To support businesses in this regard, dfcu has established a dedicated unit that provides knowledge, guidance, and advisory services to both internal management and customers, assisting them in aligning with ESG principles and enhancing their positioning,” Kasasa said.   By implementing continuity plans, he said dfcu aims to provide innovative and sustainable financing options.   “For example, by investing in assets with long-term returns such as solar energy, this approach allows dfcu to remain flexible and support businesses in their sustainability efforts,” he said. While closing the event with a certificate awarding ceremony, Kasasa emphasized dfcu’s commitment to ESG principles and the organization’s continued efforts to foster partnerships with businesses that prioritize sustainability
