President Museveni reconciles warring Muslim factions

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has since time immemorial preached unity among the people because they discovered that unity is strength. He said this while commending the Moslem community and leaders for uniting and he was happy to see that the Muslim community had reached this unity.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon while meeting Moslem leaders from all sects of Old Kampala, Kibuli and Nakasero who called on him at State House, Entebbe.

The delegation headed by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje was at State House to brief the President about an agreement reached between the factions and uniting as one body.

Sheikh Mubajje, told the President that they signed a Unity Agreement between Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), the Kibuli group and the Nakasero group to unite as one body at a function held at Gaddafi National Mosque in Kampala.

President Museveni commended the Moslem groups for this action and noted that different people have different talents and abilities which are useful only when they come together.

“The eight years I spent fighting Amin, I was actually helped by Moslems like Abbas Kibazo of Kibuli, Zubair Bakali, among others, therefore uniting with all groups including Moslems helped us win because unity is power,” the President emphasized.

Responding to the Moslem leaders appreciation for the appointments of Moslems in key Government positions, the President said that he looks for good people from wherever they are found.

He promised to support upcoming activities of Moslems that include, the Annual General Assembly (AGM) where they will elect new leaders and the ongoing collection of ideas from around the country for their Constitutional review process.

President Museveni asked the Moslems to actualise the idea of constructing a seminary that will help to train Moslem leaders here in Uganda.

Mufti Mubajje thanked the President for sparing time to meet them and commended him for his tireless efforts to unite all Moslems in Uganda that has in the end yielded good results.

“Thank you, Your Excellency for your efforts of uniting all Moslems in Uganda and  thank you also for trying to unite the region and Africa. You have helped us to see that Moslems unite since the time you initiated the Kabwegyere commission,” Mubajje said.

Mubajje revealed the genesis of their conflicts that started when a Moslem property at William Street was sold to local business man, Drake Lubega, until President Museveni intervened and rescued the property back to Moslems.

“First, the disunity was as a result of William Street property. It was in the courts and after, you agreed to pay off Lubega and the property is now helping us. Money from that building is now helping the regions to run some activities,” he said.

The Mufti added, “We have sat down on both sides to forge a way of uniting and talking to each other. We now confirm that we have reconciled and that’s why we are here all together to inform you of this development.”

He said that the Kabwegyere commission recommended a lot of things to implement and they have agreed upon them all together because they now believe in unity and development.

“We signed a document agreeing to unite. We even left Old Kampala together. We are now all together as the Uganda Moslem community,” Sheikh Mubajje explained.

He revealed that as they plan a Constitutional review, at the same time they are organising for the upcoming general assembly that will lead to elections of new leaders.

“I want, once again, to thank you for appointing our people in key Government positions in the recent deployments and appointments. I want to assure you that this time Moslems are happy and contented,” he assured the President.

The delegation that met and confirmed this development to the President included Sheikh Obeid Kamulegeya, Sheikh Muhammed Yunusu Kamoga, Sheikh Muhamood Kibaate, Sheikh Kasule Ndilangwa and Sheikh Hamid Umar Kateregga.

Others were Hajji Ramanthan Mugalu, Hajji Faruk Kamulegeya and Masaba Muhamood. All these leaders commended President Museveni for the efforts put in the whole process until their unity was realised.

“I am happy to see you. We are here to tell you that we have united. You are the one who put efforts in this,” Sheikh Kamulegeya said.

The delegation revealed to the President that a trustee committee is going to be instituted with an aim of looking after the Moslem properties as per his advice and counsel.

They also thanked the President for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic successfully and said he used Moslem teachings on fighting pandemics.

And then prayed together a Dua led by Sheikh Ndirangwa and requested Allah to bless the President and give him peace and good health.

Absa Bank Uganda announces Shs110bn profit after tax in financial Year 2021

Mumba Kalifungwa, Managing Director, Absa Bank Uganda.

Absa Bank Uganda has announced a profit after tax of Shs 110 billion for the year ended December 2021, representing a 169 per cent growth in profitability from the previous year.

“Despite a tough operating environment, economic recovery was faster than anticipated evidenced by the remarkably resilient performance and expansion of the economy by an estimated 5.3 per cent. Private sector business growth was underpinned by a rebound in activity in agriculture, construction, and public administration. We registered a significant drop in impairment of 77.8 per cent as a result of increased improvement in the construct of our loan book indicating a faster than anticipated recovery from the adverse economic impact of the various Covid-19 containment measures,” said Mumba Kalifungwa, Managing Director, Absa Bank Uganda.

The bank also delivered 15.4 per cent growth in revenue to Shs 365 billion indicating a Shs 21 billion growth from 2020 attributed to sustained customer deposit performance throughout the year, coupled with market liquidity.

“Our net customer assets stand at Shs 1.3 trillion, marginally up by 0.1 per cent which can be attributed to weak credit demand caused by the adverse effects of the pandemic. We continued to extend financing to key sectors that drive the economy including manufacturing, trade and agriculture. Considering the full reopening of the economy and projected economic growth of 5.5 per cent for 2022, we expect a rebound in business activity across all sectors and anticipate that we will lend more to the private sector,” Michael Segwaya, Executive Director and CFO said.

The bank’s customer deposits grew by 2.7 per cent to Shs 2.421 trillion, maintaining a 10.6 per cent cumulative annual growth rate for the third year running. There was also a 21.6 per cent rise in total equity from 2020.

“We managed to grow our customer deposits despite a challenging year reflecting increased customer trust in the Absa brand. Our position in the market is stronger and we are even better poised to support economic growth across all key sectors as the economy expands. We are well capitalized with our total capital ratio at 24.3 per cent, well above the 15 per cent regulatory limit,” Mumba added.

Total costs remained flat year-on-year as a result of improved cost management and reduction in brand separation costs.

“Our commitment to be a strong force for good is unwavering as we look to deliver shared value within the communities that we operate. Our people are our greatest asset and we invested significantly in human capital development and enhanced staff productivity to drive business growth. Whereas our costs went up, they remain under control and in-line with inflation,” Mumba stated.

Absa Uganda intends to continue to leverage digital technology to deliver seamless customer experiences and drive business growth as innovation remains key to the realization of its ambition to be a digitally led bank.

“We remain cautiously optimistic in our outlook for 2022. Full reopening bodes well for economic rebound and monetary policy remains supportive of the recovery of the economy. We remain committed to providing,” he said.

Minister Baryomunsi blasts Enanga, says Oulanyah’s father needs counseling not Police summons

Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi

The Minister for Information, Communication, Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has asked Police spokesperson Fred Enanga to stop dragging his name in the alleged drama of poisoning the fallen Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah.

Yesterday, Police summoned the late Speaker’s father Okori Nathan, former Minister Godfrey Suubi Kiwanda, Chris Baryomunsi who was mentioned by Kiwanda, Gilbert Olanya, Santa Okot, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine, Bosmic Otim and others to explain the allegations that Oulanyah  was poisoned.

Oulanyah died on March 20, 2022 in Seattle, USA barely two months after he was admitted in February this year. He was laid to rest on the April 8, 2022.

“I am not mourning in vain. I want to state clearly that Jacob Oulanyah was poisoned. He told me. The doctors tried to deal with the poison. It affected his health so badly that he could not recover,” Oulanyah’s father said at the send off of his son.

Speaking earlier today, Dr. Baryomunsi blasted Mr. Enanga noting that he should be professional in the way he does his investigations and avoid dragging their names into the drama of poison.

“Police should be professional in the way they do their work. Jacob Oulanyah’s father needs counseling to come to terms with the loss of his son, not police summons. At this rate, Fred Enanga may end up summoning Jacob Oulanyah from the grave,” Baryomunsi said.

He said according to Enanga, the investigation is focusing on individuals peddling information that the late speaker was poisoned and therefore there is no way his name can be mentioned since he never said it.

According to Enanga, Oulanyah died of multiple organ failure of the heart, lungs, liver and kidney from the University of Washington Medical Centre, in Seattle, USA.

“The Former Speaker had also attended other hospitals in Germany, the Uganda Cancer Institute and other hospitals, after he was diagnosed with Cancer in 2019. From all these hospitals, there was no trace of poison, in the systemic circulation and or body organs, as per the medical records.  The deceased was treated in hospitals in Uganda, Germany and the US, under constant supervision, with numerous samples being taken regularly.  All samples did not refer to any clues for poisoning,” Enanga said.

“Rising Woman grew my business’ brand equity” – Manuela P. Mulondo

Manuella Mulondo Pacutho who emerged 1st runner up in the inaugural Rising Woman Initiative

For the past five years, dfcu Bank in partnership with Daily Monitor and Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) have run a program dubbed ‘Rising Woman’ which is aimed at recognizing, celebrating, and promoting a culture of mentorship among women in business in Uganda.

Manuela P. Mulondo, the 2nd runner up winner of Season 1 of ‘RisingWoman’ in 2018, shares her journey of participating in the competition and her passion to see a Uganda where women succeed at the workplace while enjoying motherhood.

1.      Tell us about yourself and your business.

My name is Emmanuella Pacutho Mulondo, I am the CEO and the founder of The CradleChildcare. The Cradle is a childcare and education service designed for the workplace. OurVision is to see a Uganda where women are free to maximize their potential professionally and still be able to raise well-adjusted children. We partner with organizations, families, or businesses to set up spaces for childcare at the workplace.

2.      Describe your experience, participating in the Rising Woman competition?

It was quite an exciting experience! Meeting the sponsors of the initiative and the defense of my proposal stood out for me because it’s not always easy to translate your passion into words.

3.      What was your key highlight from your participation in the Rising Woman competition?

My highlight was the grand finale. Receiving the recognition and prize as1st runner up was very important to me.My prize also came with a book titled “The Manicure” which transformed my life. Also, later that evening, I was traveling to South Africa for the Obama Fellowship, so I had double excitement as you can imagine.

4.      Looking back to when you started, how did the Rising Woman program change/impact your life?

I can think of two things that made significant differences to myself and my business: going to Nairobi, Kenya, and the practicality of the Rising Woman Program. The practicality of Rising Woman is what impacted me the most, because we metsuccessful and influential businesswomen who have transformed the economic landscape of Kenya. To date, their dedication and drive continue to inspire me.  I met and made mentors during the trip to Nairobi, and I am still thankful for that.

5.      If you were to go back in time, what would you have done differently?

I don’t think I would do anything any differently because given the information I had then, I gave the competition my best and I was among the winners. Maybe I would have done more, but not differently.

6.      What lessons did you pick from your experience with the Rising Woman Initiative?

My biggest lesson was seeing the successful entrepreneurs we met in Nairobi being able to balance work and life. Both my roles at home and at work are equally important to me so understanding how to make them coexist successfully was quite critical for me.

I also learnt that it’s possible for us as women to change the economic landscape in the country.

7.      Have you realized any opportunities or benefits because of your participation in the Rising Woman competition?

Rising Woman was a stepping stone for me. The publicity raised our brand equity as The Cradle. The good book says, “Why light a candle and put it under the table?” Our brand was more visible because of Rising Woman.

8.      What advice would you give to a woman entrepreneur whos’ still undecided about taking part in the Rising Woman Initiative?

I say;go for it! Even if you do not make it to the top participants, Rising Woman helps you refine your dream and business. The feedback from the judges gives you direction on how to grow your enterprise, no matter its size or area of focus.

Again, GO FOR IT!

9.      Please share some tips for anyone planning to join the competition

It’s important to understand that the organizers of this initiative aren’t seeking perfect proposals or a certain level of expertise. Passion and the desire to communicate your short and long-term goals is what will make you stand out. So, I would say be raw and candid in your presentation, be confident in your dream and give your business a chance to benefit from this program.

Monitor Publications Limited’s (MPL) flagship brand Daily Monitor in partnership with dfcu Women in Business Program and Uganda Investment Authority-UIA are running the fifth season of the Rising Woman campaign. The objectives of the campaign include; recognizing, celebrating, and promoting a culture of mentorship among women in business in Uganda.

Kabaka’s 67th birthday celebrations postponed to May

Kabaka Mutebi

This year’s Kabaka birthday celebrations and run have been shifted to an unspecified date in May as Kabaka Mutebi is still in Europe and is not expected to be back by his birthday. This has been revealed by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga at Bulange Mengo when he was addressing the media.

According to Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Kabaka Mutebi is not expected to be present in the kingdom by the 13th of April 2022. The birthday celebrations cannot, therefore, kick-off without the presence of the main celebrant Kabaka Mutebi.

Kabaka Mutebi II left for Europe on the 29th of March 2022 to meet medical experts and business partners of his Kabaka Foundation and he is still on this trip until May this year when he is expected to return.

The Kabaka’s birthday is not only held to celebrate his life but to also advocate for a specific health-related cause according to the theme set by the kingdom that year.  This has now also been pushed to May.

The Kabaka usually flags off the run at the Mengo palace with a Buganda and Uganda flag. People then begin to run setting out from the Mengo palace along the Royal mile and ending at the palace.

Traditionally, the run is the biggest bash of the year with over 50,000 people participating every year donning red kits. It is held on the Sunday preceding Kabaka’s 13th April birthday to mobilize funds for a specific health-related cause.

The run was started in 2014, focusing on fighting fistula and by 2016 enough money had been raised and given to Kitovu Hospital to help treat women with the condition.

In 2017, the run was directed at fighting against Sickle Cell and as at 2019, proceeds totaling to Shs550 million had been raised and given towards the fight. In 2019 the run was directed towards fighting HIV after Kabaka Mutebi was appointed the UNAIDs HIV/AIDs Ambassador. This theme continues till this year.

According to Katikkiro Mayiga also, the birthday run kits which were supposed to be worn for the run are still held by the customs as Airtel Uganda has been unable to clear them on time to be used for the run which was expected to take place on Sunday 10th April 2022. Airtel which as the main sponsor of the run is still working on having the kits cleared by May so that the run will be held then.

This is the first time for the Kabaka’s birthday not to be celebrated on the 13th of April since the kingdom and monarchy were restored in 1993. Since the reign of Kabaka Daudi Chwa, the birthday of the Kabaka has been celebrated publicly.
