ROOTs Campaign: Uganda Breweries staff plant over 1000 trees in Luweero District

Over 1,000 trees have been planted by a section of Uganda Breweries staff at Bethany Land Institute found in Nandere Parish, in Luweero District.

This planting exercise is part of the Running Out of Trees (ROOTs) initiative that is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment with support from other organisations in the private sector.

The ROOTs Campaign was launched in February 2020 as a 5-year project which aims at bringing private sector companies onboard to support Government’s initiative to restore forest cover. For the past two years, the campaign has managed to attract the support from various corporate companies and cultural institutions which include; KCCA, Tree Adoption Uganda, Stanbic Bank, ATC Uganda, MOGAS, MTN, Buganda Kingdom to mention but a few. These have supported the cause through purchasing tree seedlings as well as taking part in the tree planting activities across Uganda.

The tree planting activity is part of Uganda Brewery’s efforts to meet the global 2030 targets which are in line with the Spirit of Progress of Agenda.

“At Uganda Breweries we believe that tree planting has huge potential of tackling the climate crisis we are experiencing that is why we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and acting on climate change,” said Suleiman Ngondi, Uganda Breweries Sustainability and Communications Manager.

Bethany Land Institute was founded by three Priest friends, Frs. Emmanuel Katongole, Cornelius Ssempala and Anthony Zachary Rweza as a response to some of the challenges affecting society including food insecurity and environmental degradation. It’s on this land that UBL staff planted trees in Lazarus Forest, a 162-acre natural forest which serves as a base of ecological education and reforestation at the Institute.

The tree planting exercise is in collaboration with Tree Adoption Uganda who will be mapping all the trees planted using the ROOTs App as well as monitoring them till they’re fully grown.

“With this planting exercise we believe that we are gradually closing in on 4 million trees that have been planted only this year under the ROOTs campaign. We believe that we would have doubled this number by the close of this year,” said Angella Kasiimire from Tree Adoption Uganda.

Ngondi, who led the UBL staff to the planting exercise also appreciated the staff that withstood the scorching sun to plant the trees and help reafforest the area.

“I thank the staff that took part in the exercise as well as the team at Tree Adoption Uganda that coordinated the planting exercise and Bethany Land Institute who welcomed and hosted us for a full day. With simple gestures like these and commitment, we shall realize our goal of planting the 40 million trees by 2025.” Ngondi said.

“Trees are crucial to our livelihood as they contribute to the environment by improving the air quality we inhale, conserving water and soil, as well as supporting wildlife.” Ngodi added.

The Running out of Trees Campaign also seeks to respond to Uganda’s International obligations per the Bonn challenge where the Government pledged to restore 2.5million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2030 through forest protection, afforestation and sustainable biomass production measures under Uganda’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

Oulanyah Trust Fund set up to support needy children

The Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny Dollo has revealed that a ‘Jacob Oulanyah Education Trust Fund’ has been set up to educate the former speaker’s children and other who depended on him.

He added that the Fund will be chaired by himself and composed of members like the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

“It is our vow, our determination that Jacob Oulanyah’s children will not be able to see Jacob now physically, but their dreams and their pursuit of education will continue as if Oulanyah was still alive. Those who are studying outside will not come back to study in Uganda, they will continue to the highest level of their pursuit,” he said.

Owiny Dollo also said that they will extend this support to all those who depended on Oulanyah, adding that this will be possible if the love which has been shown by the grief of Ugandans is converted into a contribution to the trust fund. He pledged to account for all the finances they raise for the cause.

He says that Oulanyah remains alive through his children left behind.

“In my tradition, there is continuity in Jacob Oulanyah in his children. How can we then prove that the outpouring of our grief, the massive show of our love was not just for the moment, but it was a true endearment to someone who accomplished so much in a short time,” Owiny Dollo questioned.

The revelation by the Chief Justice followed a moving eulogy by Prossy Kaka Oyella, a senior three student of Seroma Christian High School who Oulanyah was sponsoring.

Oulanyah had through his effort secured bursaries for over 100 students at Seroma Christian High School in Mukono and was part of the student’s life, mentorship, and inspiration as demonstrated by testimonies from the school.

During the service to celebrate the life of Oulanyah at his residence in Muyenga on Sunday, 03 April 2022, some of the students poured out their hearts to their sponsor, Oulanyah.

Oulanyah’s body which was flown in on Friday from the USA was ushered into his Muyenga residence by members of the Uganda Bikers Association, a charity organization that he was part of. The bikers presented a white helmet as a symbol that the Speaker is no more, while Bwola Dancers from Acholi performed the royal bwola dance all through the service celebrating his life.

MPs were clad in bow ties, memorizing the late speaker.

An emotional tribute by a senior three student, Prossy Kaka Oyella left mourners in tears after she expressed fears that her hope for education was gone.

Oyella said that although Oulanyah is gone, he has left them in a better place compared to when he started supporting them 10 years ago. She said that although Oulanyah was her sponsor, Oulanyah was also her father and mentor.

Oyella said that she last spoke to Oulanyah in 2020, but was saddened with disbelief over the announcement that her sponsor had passed on.

She said she wished she had a second opportunity to speak to Oulanyah saying he used to tell them that Christ was everything, and was born again.

She called on Government, and specifically Parliament to continue with Oulanyah’s effort of sponsoring them saying the deceased would give them everything.

“He picked me in 2019; hope for education was gone because I passed well, but I thought I would end up not going to school, the way other people had ended up, but he built hope in me for education. I first said, ‘Lord you know everything’, but my worry is this might be my last time to go to school, please help us.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among said that the children of Oulanyah will now be a responsibility of the Parliament of Uganda.

Among said that Members of Parliament will contribute to the Jacob Oulanyah Education Trust Fund that will be used to sponsor Oulanyah’s children in school, but also other needy Ugandan children.

“We want to pledge to you the children of Jacob, we as the Parliament of Uganda, we have got an additional responsibility of Jacob’s children, you are our children,” Among said.

She hailed the Parliament of Uganda for foregoing several things and ensuring that Oulanyah was taken for treatment.

In the same event, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena hailed the NRM for allowing Oulanyah to shine. Akena said that whereas Oulanyah had the potential, UPC didn’t have the platform to enable Oulanyah to become Speaker.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem said that people had unimaginable hope and expectation in Oulanyah. He said people hoped that he would transform northern Uganda, and he had just started and tested it.

Rev. Dr. Joel Obetia who presided over the service in Muyenga asked mourners and Ugandans to make peace with God so that they are ready when the Lord calls them.

“Let us make peace with God so that we do not have any what-ifs, but or anything else and all these things that we say to show that we still want more time. We are praying for Jacob, some even wish for his return, but he is in a better place,” Obetia said.

Thousands of refugees stranded in Uganda following violent clashes in DR Congo

Refugees

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the government of Uganda and humanitarian partners, are assisting some 10,000 refugees in the country’s southwest Kisoro district after they fled violent clashes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which began on 28 March 2022.

Thousands of children, women, and men have arrived from Rutchuru territory in the DRC, some eight kilometres from the Bunagana border crossing in Uganda’s Kisoro district.

According to UNHCR, nearly 36,000 people have been displaced within the DRC. Most are being accommodated by host families, or in markets and schools. Security conditions are making it difficult to reach those affected, but a task force led jointly by UNHCR and the World Food Programme is being established to organize the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

“As people arrived in Uganda on 28 and 29 March, artillery fire and gunshots could be heard from across the border, indicating that clashes were ongoing. Six people arrived with gunshot wounds and were taken for treatment,” UNHCR said in a statement.

UNHCR and Uganda’s Office of the Prime Minister which manages several transit centres for asylum seekers along the Congolese border are responding to the emergency in coordination with district and local authorities and our partners. UNHCR has already relocated some 2,350 asylum seekers to the nearby Nyakabande transit centre.

UNHCR said heavy rains have made conditions even more difficult for people who arrived with only the few belongings they could carry. Currently, Uganda has closed the Bunagana border to trade but is thankfully allowing asylum seekers to enter the country. Other asylum-seekers are using irregular border crossings.

“We have also observed many unaccompanied children, older people and wheelchair users among those fleeing the violence. Most of the new arrivals are sheltering in and around the market and elsewhere in the community. As with many previous incidents, they want to stay close to the border so they can more easily get news of what is happening in their villages, in the hope that the violence stops and they can return home.”UNHCR said

The refugee agency has established a system to identify and fast track people in need of emergency assistance. Several partners are also responding to the emergency including the Kisoro District Local Government, Care and Assistance for Forced Migrants, Medical Teams International, Médecins Sans Frontières, Save the Children International, African Initiatives for Relief and Development, Uganda Red Cross, and Friends of Kisoro.

UNHCR commended Uganda once again for allowing those seeking safety to enter the country.

They revealed that so far this year, UNHCR has received only 9 per cent of the overall funding needs of US$343.3 million (Shs 1.2 trillion) for our operations in Uganda, a country that hosts more refugees than any other in Africa.

In addition, the humanitarian needs of over 5.6 million internally displaced people in the DRC remain largely unmet due to lack of funding. UNHCR’s operations there are only 8 per cent funded out of US$225.4 million (Shs 807 billion) required.

BBC Africa Eye reveals how religious cults in Uganda reject some Christian conventions

Faith under Fire - BBC Africa Eye

In an exclusive investigation, BBC Africa eye uncovers how rogue pastors exploit the trust and belief of their followers for profit and power in Uganda.

For hundreds of millions of Africans, Christianity is the cornerstone of their existence.  But an increase in rogue pastors has led to a fight for the soul of Christianity in Africa

BBC Africa Eye reporter Peter MacJob travels to Uganda to meet the new religious movements rejecting Christian conventions, the traditional pastors working hard to maintain their flocks, the families who have suffered tragic losses at the hands of rogue pastors, and those who have abandoned religion altogether.

Over 80% of the population in Uganda are Christian. Churches offer blessings, life changing miracles and exorcisms’ of evil spirits.

In 2000 a cult in Kanungu, Western Uganda called the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God – believed the new millennium signaled the end of the world. Over 500 members of its members were put in a church. The doors and windows were nailed shut and the church was set alight. Everyone in the church died.

In Kagadi, Western Uganda thousands of followers belong to a religious sect known as ‘Faith of Unity’. Their leader Omukama Bisaka perceived himself as God with supernatural powers. Despite passing away one year ago, many of his followers believe that he will return.

Faith of Unity is so popular that it has support from the government, including the President.

Their teachings reject the bible as they are of the view that it has been introduced to distort the minds of Africans. Instead they use a version that was written by their former leader Bisaka. In theirs Jesus does not exist and their leader is portrayed as a Deity

Asiimwe George William was a senior leader in the Faith of Unity for over 20 years.  He tells Africa Eye: “When I read the characteristics of a cult I discovered that we actually belonged to a cult.”

He admits things were made up; “Things we used to concoct, but they did not harm directly anyone. We wanted to sustain our faith. That’s why we concocted them.”

BBC Africa Eye put these claims to Faith of Unity but they declined to comment.

Pastor Rodgers Atwebembeire has spent years looking at new religious movements across East Africa. He breaks down how these leaders act.

“Their word is as authoritative as the Bible.  When they speak, God has spoken. Their followers are expected to obey them without question.”

Despite there being over 40,000 evangelical churches in Uganda. Many are struggling to maintain their memberships.

Peter met a family who opened up their home to a pastor and his wife. Their 4-year-old daughter was allegedly murdered by the couple for a human sacrifice.

The mother says:  “When you looked at him you would think he was a man of God. He used to praise, worship, and clap his hands. He would pretend to be spiritual, but it was all a lie.”

Due to the rise of rogue pastors many Ugandans are turning to other secular forms such as Humanism. Its core principles are based on accepting everyone regardless of religion, culture or sexual orientation.

Pastor Rodgers Atwebembeire says: “I really do think that in the coming 10 years or 15 years we are going to see a very huge shift. We will see a lot of Humanism, not only taking over our institutions of education, but also even what used to be Christian churches and congregations.”

With charlatans and con men preying on the faith of millions, what is the future for believers in Uganda and across Africa?

South Sudan’s rival leaders Kiir and Machar agree on unified army command

President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar

South Sudan’s rival parties on Sunday reached a breakthrough and signed an agreement on the formation of a unified armed forces command.

The deal was reached in Juba following mediation by neighbouring Sudan.

A deadlock between the parties to the South Sudan peace agreement on security arrangements had been holding up the implementation of the 2018 peace deal.

Tensions between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and SPLM/A-IO leader Riek Machar have spiralled recently, triggering fears of a return to conflict in the country.

“It is important that we silence the guns so that South Sudan can prosper…Not everything is perfect but we want to say that we want to move the country forward,” said Minister of Mining, Martin Gama Abucha, who signed the deal on behalf of Machar’s party the SPLM/A-IO.

“This is to inform everyone that we have agreed today to unify the military command. We have agreed to divide the positions because peace is precious. We have to agree so that we develop the country,” added Kiir’s national security adviser Tut Gatluak Manime.

The deal sets out terms to integrate opposition commanders into the armed forces. The parties signed a matrix for the creation of a unified armed forces command within a week. They also agreed to graduate and deploy the unified forces in training camps within a period not exceeding two months.

The parties also agreed on a regular meeting between President Kiir and his five deputies to build trust among the parties.

Counting Uganda’s dividends from Expo 2020, Dubai, UAE

Ambassador Henry Mayega

The Yoweri Museveni administration, for good reasons and with sharper focus, took a decision to take part in the Expo 2020, Dubai and the dividends from that involvement are staggeringly pleasing given their metric importance and nuance to Uganda’s economy as it re-emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

As usual the nay-sayers from Uganda’s recessing pessimistic titans, in their quackery, tried to disparage our involvement in that epochal event yet they have only themselves to blame for their ineptitude having been caught flat-footed given the below achievements. The Expo in Dubai, was named by the bureau international des expositions and it began on October 1, 2021 and it will end on March 31, 2022.Themed: “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,” the expo has had sub-themes as well; Uganda’s pavilion shared the sub- theme of “opportunity” with the UAE and is located in the Opportunity District.

Firstly, from the political point of view, the expo has had that rather qualitative upping of Uganda’s bilateral relations with the UAE and concomitantly the wider Gulf Cooperation Council member countries. President Yoweri Museveni visited here, met Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as well as the ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum(who also doubles as Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE), and officiated at the Uganda’s National/Honour Day. The then Speaker of Parliament, late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanya plus the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Lukia Nakadama, several ministers and members of parliament have also variously attended expo events.

Secondly, regarding the education sector, Uganda scooped 24 scholarships from the government of the Emirate of Sharijah that will go a long way in plateauing the people to people interaction via academic institutions plus navigating into the rather new collaboration at the technical level.

Thirdly, and as indicated in our earlier New Vision columns, Uganda’s missions abroad were tasked to prioritize economic and commercial diplomacy (ECD) in addition to traditional savoir-faire in our respective host countries; consequently the following litany of achievements have been made in the last six months of the Expo: the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed a bilateral development assistance agreement with Uganda to enhance the rural electrification project under the ministry of energy; other agreements/MoUs were signed on avoidance of double taxation, protection of investments, agricultural and economic as well as technical cooperation and manpower and labour services exportation; Elite Agro company is destined to set up seven tea processing factories (in Kisoro, Zombo, Buhweju, Kabarore, Rukiga, Bushenyi and Mitooma worth $500m); while Amea Power is to set up renewable power stations in Arua and Moroto worth $300m.

Elsewhere, both Uganda Airlines and Air Arabia flights were launched last year thereby burgeoning both human and cargo transfer from Uganda to the UAE in addition to other carriers already plying the same route. Relatedly, the Dubai liaison office, which will later become a consulate, was inaugurated late last year by, the Special Envoy, Rt. Honourable Ruhakana Rugunda- he was clustered with a couple of ministers, and it is purposed to offer consular services to the ever-burgeoning Ugandan population in the northern emirates as well as protocol support to Uganda government officials transiting through Dubai and UAE officials, nationals and others. It is vitally important as well to note the contribution of the Ugandandiaspora in development; the president while visiting the UAE last year, met them and augmented the embassy’s efforts of mobilizing them; they are currently repatriating over $400m to the pearl of Africa. While GB Lubricants are going to set up a $10m lubricant plant in Namanve Industrial Park, the Global Gases Group based in Dubai is planning to build oxygen and gases plants to supply those badly needed agents by medical facilities.

The volume of trade between the two countries has increased from 30 to 500 metric tonnes since the start of the expo preparations in 2018 and the arrival of Uganda’s carrier, Uganda Airlines fostered that volume of trade further. The two countries are also planning to share vaccine technologies in order to eventually manufacture them locally in Uganda.

The country has also been given a contract to supply 1000 heads of cattle per month for six months and Al Rawabi Dairy Farm is going to establish a $600m dairy farm in Mubende, yet the Streit Group company is setting up a technical facility in Nakasongola to produce highly sophisticated equipment to be used by the government of Uganda and the East African region.

Two arrested in connection to fire outbreak at Ministry of Agriculture drug stores

Police at Wandegeya on Sunday March 3, 2022 registered a fire outbreak at the Ministry of Agriculture stores located along Buganda Road at about 11am.

Two suspects were arrested by the police in connection to the fire that gutted the agrochemicals and equipment stores.

Police have identified the suspects as Ajambo Jerry and Namusimbi Eunice, both cleaners. The duo have been arrested to help with the investigation.

“Our fire prevention and rescue services responded at the scene on time and are currently dealt with the situation,” Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said.

“However, the cause of the fire is still unknown,” he added.

Preliminary information gathered by the officers indicates that the storekeepers always burn rubbish every Sunday and it is suspected the wind could have blown the fire inside the store since the burning point is close to the stores.

The facility has been storing different agrochemicals for weed control, animals and even spray pumps that are sent to other parts of the country.

“We are one in God,”says Chairman Lee Man-hee of Shincheonji church

The pastors from various countries in the world who established MOUs with Shincheonji church invited to a press conference on the 2nd of April

“We can learn the revealed word because God dwells in Shincheonji church,”says the pastors

Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus, under the leadership of Chairman Lee Man-hee) hosted a press conference with pastors from various countries in the world who established MOUs with Shincheonji at 5:00 PM(KST), on the 2nd of April. It was well attended by 1,500 pastors from all over the world along with reporters and journalists on ZOOM.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus hosted this event to share the progress in the online seminars that began from last year, MOUs established thus far, along with some case examples. Kim Shin-chang, the Head of the Department of International Missions stated, “Many participants from Africa in the Bible Seminar from August last year reached out to establish MOUs with us which led to the first MOU in September with the Worship in the Presence of God Church in Uganda,” explaining how Shincheonji first started to establish MOUs with other churches.

Some case examples and testimonials from pastors who established MOUs with Shincheonji were shared during the press conference.

Dongsu Kim, the head pastor of Peace Church confessed, “In the past all I preached was that everyone must believe in Jesus and by sharing grace in this way would lead to salvation. Without fulfillment, I thought heaven was somewhere one went to after death. I thought there was resurrection after death,” expressing his incorrect beliefs about salvation.

Pastor Kim is presently teaching Shincheonji’s Revealed Word to his own congregation. He also stated, “The time has come for all the pastors to come and learn so that they may live a life of faith in the correct truth. I want to share Shincheonji’s Revealed Word to my fellow pastors. I want them to learn the Word and realize that their ideas of salvation is incorrect.”

Pastor Willifred Endohu, a pastor who has been leading his church for 11 years in Cote d’Ivoire, introduced himself stating, “I studied theology in a seminary and was trained to be a pastor through prayer meetings and began ministering a church in a very small room. Thankfully enough, 11 years later my congregation has grown to be about 500 members. I am also a lecturer at a seminary institute as well.”

Pastor Wilifred Endohu is currently learning Lesson 16 of the Introductory Level in Shincheonji’s Zion Mission Center. Pastor Wilifred Endohu stated, “My thoughts and knowledge about the Bible have been broken and is changing through the lessons I’ve been learning in Shincheonji. Jesus and the Word that has become flesh has struck a chord in my heart. I also want to preach the Revealed Word after I’m done studying. I want to share this Word to the people in my congregation that have been following me for the last 8 years,” showing his aspirations upon completing the courses in Shincheonji.

He also added, “I want to express how thankful I am for the Chairman because that’s how I could receive the Revealed Word from God. He could not have taught such a profound Word if he had not met God and Jesus. I want to tell my fellow pastors that what I have seen and verified is that all the answers are in the Bible and Shincheonji is testifying those answers according to the Bible. Please come and check for yourselves.”

Chairman Lee spoke about how he has come to share the Word and the role of pastors today.

“Revelation is about re-creation. If you look at Revelation 21, the first heaven and the first earth pass away and a new heaven and a new earth are created. It is about creating people and all creation again,” Chairman Lee stated, explaining that those who are born of God’s seed are harvested and sealed to create God’s new kingdom and new people at the time of Revelation.

He also added, “Writing the word of all the chapters of Revelation in people’s hearts is harvesting, sealing, and nurturing those who have been born of God’s seed and making them into the citizens of God’s kingdom. [This is why] Jesus showed me the events of all the chapters of Revelation and commanded me to testify to all the churches,” as he explained the role of the promised pastor today.

In his concluding remarks, Chairman Lee stated, “We must become freedom fighters of God’s kingdom that restore what God lost. Let’s fight and overcome the devil with the blood of Jesus and the word of testimony and create the people of God’s kingdom so that God may finally come and reign over the world after 6000 years. This is what [God] has made known to us through the Bible. I hope that everyone engraves the words of all the chapters of Revelation—which is the law of heaven—in their hearts. There is only one God, one Bible and one hope. We, as those who believe in God, are also one. We are one!”

Some case examples of what happens after establishing MOUs were also shared. A church named, The Early Church of the New Era in the United States of America, has invited an instructor from Shincheonji, where some 100 members of the church is learning the teachings of Shincheonji Church of Jesus. A Filipino pastor is teaching his congregation after completing the Bible courses from Shincheonji Church of Jesus. A seminary school in Pakistan has opened up courses in the institution after its dean established an MOU with Shincheonji.

According to Shincheonji Church of Jesus, 2155 pastors, 22 seminary schools, 958 churches in 67 countries have established MOUs with Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Shincheonji Church of Jesus is providing theology materials and instructors for the churches and seminary schools that have made MOUs with them to educate people of the Bible as mutually decided upon in the agreement.

This event is available for viewing on Shincheonji’s official Youtube Channel (https://bit.ly/SCJyoutube)

Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been teaching Revelation and the secrets of the kingdom of heaven through online seminars since October of 2021. The 12 tribe leaders followed suit in Chairman Manhee Lee’s first lecture on Revelation and they are all available in 24 different languages on Youtube, with over 1.5 million views to date.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been broadcasting the Intermediate Level lessons on Youtube from the 31st of March which is to end on the 27th of June, 6AM every Monday and Thursday, twice a week on their official Youtube channel.
