SC-Villa logo

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended newly appointed SC Villa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brenda Nambalirwa Kawuma from taking part in all football related activities nationally.

Members of the SC Villa Trustee board last week confirmed the re-instatement of the interim committee to handle the club’s affairs a heads of the new season. Chairman Eng.William Nkemba confirmed the appointment of Nambalirwa as the new club CEO replacing Shawn Mubiru.

However, FUFA has banned her for taking football matters to ordinary courts of law before exhausting the internal Association football legal processes.

In August this year, Nambalirwa filed a complaint to court that stopped the SC Villa presidential elections with over 1000 of the club members having already cast their vote.

“The FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee initiated disciplinary charges against Ms. Nambalirwa Brenda Kawuma relating to her actions for taking football matters to ordinary courts of law before exhausting the FUFA judicial processes,” a statement from FUFA read.

The FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee has asked Mrs Nambalirwa Brenda Kawuma to submit a written statement by 11th October, 2021 for contravening FUFA, CAF and FIFA football rules and regulations.

“Nambalirwa took football related matters to courts of law before The Ethics and Disciplinary committee has henceforth written to Ms. Nambalirwa not to take part in all football related activities nationally until the disciplinary case is concluded.”

SC Villa remains under the leadership of an Interim committee that was introduced in 2018 following the resignation of the then club president Immanuel Ben Misagga.

Museveni urges African leaders to focus on Politics of Interest not Identity

Museveni speaking at Meskel Square in the Ethiopian capital Addis-Ababa

President Yoweri Museveni has urged African political leaders to shun the politics of identity that characterized most of post-independence Africa.

The President was speaking at Meskel Square in the Ethiopian capital Addis-Ababa where he addressed a mammoth rally of Ethiopian people that was also attended by many other African leaders to mark the inauguration of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a new five-year term.

Museveni said politics of identity that was mostly based on tribes and religions were counterproductive, diversionary and led to the emergency of many failed states in post-independence Africa.

President Museveni who made the opening remarks for the Heads of States and Government said as an observer of African politics for the last 60 years, he had identified politics of identity especially of tribes and religions as one that greatly affected democratic and political progress of many African countries and hindered the continent’s social economic transformation and development.

He called upon the people of Ethiopia and the African continent in general to do away with politics of identity and focus on politics of interest and support leaders based on their political agenda as opposed to their tribes or religious affiliations.

“I have been observing and participating in African politics for 60 years and politics of identity especially of tribes and religions have caused many problems to many African countries including Uganda. Uganda just came up after we had shunned politics of identity and substituted it with politics of interest and I would encourage Ethiopians to always remember that,” President Museveni said.

President Museveni commended the people of Ethiopia for conducting a credible democratic election and congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for being given the new five-year mandate to serve his people and country.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to work and bring about total peace for all Ethiopians especially by ending the war in the Tigray region which he said had made Ethiopia pay a “heavy price”.

He pledged to work with all peace loving Ethiopians to bring about peace and prosperity for all Ethiopians.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended and addressed by Presidents of Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti and South Sudan as well as delegations from several African countries and representatives of the international community.

Dubai Expo 2020: Obore bashes MPs for recording Uganda’s empty pavilion

Mr Chris Obore

The Director of Communication and public affairs at Parliament Chris Obore has bashed Ugandan MPs for recording a video showing the country’s empty pavilion during the 2020 Dubai Expo.

The MPs later showed how pavilions of other countries were fully packed noting that the country is locally and internationally disorganized.

Obore said even if the opposition paints the worst picture of Uganda using every opportunity they get, the country still remains the pearl of Africa.

“Any comparison with other countries will never change what Uganda is because the beauty of our country is natural while for other countries is just mere makeup,” Obore said adding that, “It won’t stop Uganda from being the Pearl of Africa. Any comparison won’t change what Uganda is a beautiful country. It’s intrinsic. Others can do make-up but it’s temporary.”

He said the Dubai Expo 2020 is only to tell a story to those who don’t know that Uganda is the most blessed, peaceful and the best place for one to make an investment urging investors not to listen to the fake propaganda being spread by political opportunists from the opposition who think by painting a bad picture about Uganda would attract foreign powers to come and Oust the current sitting government out.

Pandora papers: Jim Muhwezi on the spot for hiding his wealth in offshore accounts and tax haven

Maj.Gen.Jim Muhwezi.

Uganda’s Security Minister Jim Muhwezi has been named among global leaders hiding their accumulated wealth in offshore accounts and tax havens.

Jim Muhwezi is related by marriage to Uganda’s longtime President Yoweri Museveni. In 2021, Museveni appointed him Security Minister, granting him power over the country’s widely feared security apparatus.

A former guerilla fighter, Muhwezi served as Uganda’s spy chief before being elected to parliament in 1996 and awarded a junior ministerial position. In 2001, he became minister of health, a position he held until 2006. The following year, a Ugandan court charged Muhwezi with embezzling money donated for children’s vaccines. He denied wrongdoing and was acquitted. Muhwezi served as minister of information from 2015 to 2016, when he lost his parliamentary seat. He was re-elected to parliament in 2021.

Muhwezi owned and held shares in two shell companies.

In February 2015, Muhwezi became one of three shareholders of the British Virgin Islands company Audley Holdings Ltd. The company’s directors authorized it to manage bank accounts in Europe.

In 2015, an Israeli businessman sued Muhwezi’s co-shareholders in a Ugandan court, disputing the transfer of shares in a similarly-named company, Audley Ltd, which owns two casinos in Uganda. The lawsuit did not name Muhwezi, and the court later ruled to stop the share transfer. Audley Holding Ltd. is the holding company of Audley Ltd. in Uganda, a company shareholder told ICIJ media partner, The Daily Monitor.

Regulators closed Audley Holdings Ltd in 2016 for failing to pay registration fees. But in 2018, the Panamanian law firm Alcogal, which set up the company, reported Audley Holdings and its shareholders, including Muhwezi, to BVI regulators in a suspicious activity report after a database search revealed the eleven-year-old embezzlement allegations against him. Alcogal told regulators it resigned as the BVI’s company’s registered agent.

Under BVI law, firms like Alcogal must keep records about their clients for five years after the business relationship ends. It’s unclear what, if any, due diligence Alcogal conducted before accepting Muhwezi as a client in 2015.

Alcogal said that it complies with requirements where it operates and “performs enhanced due diligence on a client who is determined to be a high-risk customer, regardless of the nature of the relationship or service.”

Muhwezi also owned Sukari Loma Investment Holdings Ltd, created in Cyprus in 2013 through the offshore provider SFM. The company provided “financial services,” Muhwezi wrote on a signed beneficial owner statement, adding that its funds came from “salary savings” and his hotel and radio stations. It was closed in 2015.

When contacted by an ICIJ reporter, Muhwezi said, “I don’t know what you are talking about and I can’t make any reply.”

MTN Uganda announces intention to float 20% of its shares on Uganda Securities Exchange

MTN has announced its intention to float 20 percent of its shares on Uganda Securities Exchange (USE). The announcement was made by the chairman of MTN Uganda, Charles Mbire.

“I announce MTN’s intention to float 20 percent of its issued shares through an Initial Public Offer (IPO) of existing ordinary shares, a process which has already been approved by Capital Market Authority (CMA) of Uganda,” Mbire said.

Mbire said the listing is in line with the Group’s strategic priority to create shared value, partly through ensuring broad-based ownership in its operating subsidiaries. It is also in line with the provisions of MTN Uganda’s NTO licence, which require its listing by end-June 2022.

Last year June, 2020, the Government of Uganda through Uganda communications Commission (UCC) renewed the National Telecommunication Operator Licence of MTN Uganda and thus extended its stay in Uganda on condition that they would sell 20 percent of its shares to the public of Uganda.

MTN Uganda was first granted a Second National Operator License for the provision of telecommunications services on October 20, 1998 for a period of 20 years. The telecommunication giant paid $100 million for renewal of the license for 12 years.

In 2019 President Museveni urged MTN Uganda to list on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) so that some of the revenue stays in the country as opposed to all moving out. At that time National Social Security Fund (NSSF) had acquired 4 percent of the shares and the Fund remains a potential purchase of the extra stake.

According to a source in the telecom service provider, MTN has been in discussions with the NSSF to acquire more shares.

Speaking earlier today, the Vice President South and East Africa MTN Group, Yolanda Cuba said Uganda is an important market for MTN Group and they are proud of partnering with Uganda and Ugandans to foster and ensure faster and inclusive growth through digital transformation with Uganda.

“Uganda for welcoming MTN Group 23 years ago. We have another 23 years to build again but this time it won’t be just MTN and shareholders in South Africa but MTN with the people of Uganda,” Cuba said.

“We firmly believe that our success as a group rests on a healthy and meaningful relationship with this country. Uganda is actually one of the first countries that we   ventured in outside South Africa,” she said.

“Over the next 3 years MTN will invest over Shs 1 trillion to extend coverage and ensure every Ugandan has access to voice & data. Our ambition is to reach 90 percent of this population,” she said.

France President Emmanuel Macron

Unlike the previous summits that have been classified and unique to head of states, diplomats, their entourage and other government institutions. This time around, the Africa – France will host youths from various professions to share their experiences on how to bolster and re -orient their relationships in economic development, political and cultural ties between the African Continent and France.

This was declared by President Emmanuel Macron while in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in 2017 during his visit in the West African nation.

The two-day summit that was postponed to this year due to the #Covid-19 pandemic under the theme “Re- inventing our Relationships together” will run from October 8-9, at Sud de France ARENA in Montpellier.

Speaking at his residence in Nakasero, H.E. Jules Armand Aniambossou, the French Ambassador in Uganda emphasized that some selected Ugandans were invited in order to deal with the young  present generation who are actually  doing the real work.

“President Macron realised that is not all about governments but people from Africa and these are not just words but to listen to  others so that it benefits all of us and it is not a relationship between  the donor and the recipient but to go beyond with a new spirit,” Jules Armand added.

At the same function, over 20 attendees from Uganda had an opportunity to mix and mingle with their colleagues in preparation for the summit that started in 1973.

More certainly, it will create opportunities to facilitate access to school and higher education, including  mobility, provision of support to entrepreneurship, innovation, enabling and forging of new common consciousness, strengthening their remembrance ties, accompanying Africa on the frontline in climate transition, working to renew development assistance in order to foster  relationship of partnerships among others.

Additionally, the summit shall have a dialogue for everyone to contribute to addressing shared challenges presented to the President of France and representatives of African Youths which will be led by Achille Mbembe a prominent Cameroonian philosopher, political scientist and an intellectual based in South Africa.
