Distribution of masks, sanitizers, sanitary pads, mosquito nets, condoms by UPDF excites Kamwokya residents

Kamwokya Residents looking at Army and LDU soldiers before giving out Items.

Excitement is all over among residents of Kamwokya a city suburb in Kampala central after receiving a number of items from Uganda Peoples Defense Force-UPDF, ranging from Masks, sanitizers, mosquito nets, sanitary pads and condoms.

Uganda Peoples Defense Force-UPDF on Monday distributed masks, mosquito nets, sanitary pads and condoms to over 400 vulnerable residents in Church zone Kamwokya parish and nearby areas. These residents include pregnant mothers, elders, children and the sick.

Ruth Nansubuga, a women leader in the Church zone expressed her excitement that this initiative by the UPDF has come at the right time when most of the residents are going through hard times economically.

“There are many old people, pregnant ladies and many children here in families that cannot even manage to buy themselves mosquito nets and masks, therefore, we are very happy and appreciative for this contribution to our people ”Nansubuga notes.

She however says some residents have missed out especially those who have been found not at home, adding that there was also a challenge of finding a family with many children yet children were given one mosquito net.

Sylvia Ariyo an expectant mother who stays in Kisenyi 2 zone in Kamwokya 2 parish appreciates the contribution given to people like her, saying the mask that she received is a nice one and comfortable to put on unlike those masks which were given to them by the government of Uganda during the lifting of lockdown.

Ariyo, who was found waiting for the mosquito net is optimistic that mosquitoes will help her family because her children have been sleeping without mosquito nets. The masks are products of Nyanza Textile Industries Limited (Nytil), branded with the “GOU” word.

A number of youth both girls and boys received condoms and sanitary pads as one way of helping them prevent sexually transmitted diseases also experienced their happiness towards this contribution. Stephen Owino told this reporter that some youth shy away from buying condoms and end up engaging in sexual activities without any protection, which he says has resulted in unwanted pregnancies and contracting sexual transmitted diseases.

UPDF also fumigated in water trenches, households, toilets among other places where mosquitoes and other insects bleed from and cleaning places they find dirty.

Lt. Col. James Muhumuza, a team leader of the team says, they are doing this as part of giving back to the most vulnerable communities and it is another way of getting in touch with the civilians as they have always done as part of Tarehe Sita army week activities.

UPDF will be celebrating its 40th Tarehe Sita on 6th February which will take place in Greater Masaka sub-region at the Liberation Square in Masaka city.

Muhumuza said they have been in different places like Kisenyi, Mengo, Kasubi, Kawaala, Kivvulu in Makerere and on Tuesdays they will be reaching out to people in Kawempe division. Muhumuza could not reveal how many items they come with to give out. He said they bring and give out, and people who miss out, they arrange with local leaders to see how they can deliver to those missed out.

According to UPDF first division spokesperson Mal Bilal Katamba this year’s theme is “Celebrating UPDF at 40, fruits of a fulfilled partnership of maintaining and consolidating the people’s security, stability and prosperity. He says they are undertaking different projects in Kampala metropolitan area and greater Masaka as a way of giving back to people.

What if Uganda sponsored US political processes?

It is the most tantalizing ‘what if’ Uganda sponsored political processes as well as civil society groups in the US especially during an electoral cycle! If we did, then we would be condemned with sanctions, called a rogue state and the entire west would be mobilized to tow the same line.

Ironically, during the entire life of the Donald Trump administration, Russia was deceitfully hounded especially by democrats, even if inquiry upon inquiry found the accusations against that country baseless, for electronically influencing the outcome of the 2016 US general elections in favor of DJT, the Republican contender and against Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate. Which in a sense contradicts what those wonderful people do elsewhere on the globe for instance in China, Venezuela and Cuba and now in Uganda!

Just recently, US’s congressman, Elliot Engel urged the US Treasury to invoke the Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and sanction Ugandan individuals over alleged human rights violations in disregard of the already concluded due process of our laws on the matter. He went ahead with his diatribe to request the US Treasury to among others “…support human rights defenders…independent journalists and…civil society organizations…! Fortunately, Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa has responded most robustly to those double standards explaining how things are done here in accordance with the cobweb of our laws. Of all Uganda’s post-independence governments none has respected peoples’ human rights like the Yoweri Museveni government which for the very first time in the country’s history instituted the Uganda Human Rights Commission that regularly issues status reports – has Elliot Engel read them?

And the litany of accusations? The 2016 Kasese raid, the 2017 raid on Parliament, imposition of the digital tax in 2018, the arrest of Bobi Wine and Zaake after the Arua debacle and the November 2020 riots that are all, according to Engel, violations of human rights! So, that means from now on whenever goons break the law, we must consult Engel and company before we act! Our security forces must wait in their droughty corridors for Engel’s authorization before stopping criminals in their tracks. Really! And the dual of fifth columnists namely Kiiza Besigye and Jonny come lately, Bobi Wine are most ecstatic about the west’s overbearing and intrusive stance because that soothes their cognitive-deficit ridden minds! That shouldn’t surprise patriotic Ugandans because the saying goes “a drowning man clutches at a serpent!”

That shouldn’t surprise patriotic Ugandans because the saying goes “a drowning man clutches at a serpent!”

First, the most whimsical thing is for Elliot Engel and his ilk, USAID’s Richard Nelson to forget that Uganda is an independent country: that sovereignty cannot be wished away by the stroke of a pen, never. In the execution of matters of state, we will not consult anyone, not even the goliaths of this fallen world where liberals, homosexuals and others hold some sway. Uganda is neither a colony nor a protectorate of anyone, we are a sovereign state.

Secondly, the actions of our gallant security forces regarding the raid in Kasese (where an armed rebellion was underway) and on Parliament (where some Ugandan made democrats including Bobi Wine et al were captured in a clip using microphone stands to beat up NRM MPs who are assumed to have no right to protection) were carried out within the realm of their mandate namely to restore law and order. And in Arua, the same group blockaded President Yoweri Museveni’s motorcade, pelted it with stones and beat up NRM women voters to stop them from participating in the then by-election! To Engel, the NRM women folks are less of citizens than those who belong to the opposition. For Richard Nelson, if he had been a Ugandan living in the US and indulging in that country’s political processes he would have already had his visa and work permit revoked. Relatedly, the actions of our security forces being condemned by Engel are the very reason why his country is not issuing advisories to their nationals to limit their travel to Uganda. Libya, where the dim-witted and hare-brained actions of the west were invested, has currently neither an effective government nor peace and stability! It is all a game of war lords in charge of swathes of sand-dunned lands!

Thirdly, the most hilarious accusation against Uganda was that it imposed the digital tax to gag the opposition! Well, even the NRM supporters pay it! Looking at it differently, should the country always consult Engel before parliament carries out its legislative obligations? If the digital law was unjust, Engel and his proteges had an opportunity to seek judicial redress rather than stampede Uganda’s electoral processes. And when violent Kizza Besigye and his side kick, Bobi Wine. talk about plan B, they are essentially talking about a foreign-backed insurrection whose miniature, fortunately, came into the public domain in November this year by way of rioting. And when some from the civil society who are funded by foreigners, liberals and homosexuals had their accounts frozen, Engel et al jumped into the fray because their project and proteges were being nipped in the bud.

It was an alluring coincidence that while Elliot Engel roared from the US, Richard Nelson was painstakingly demanding that Uganda’s Financial Intelligence Authority unfreezes the national NGO forum account. Relatedly, Nicholas Opio was caught pants down withdrawing cash amounting to USD 340,000 (Shs1,244,400,000) from his chapter 4 Uganda bank account in Kampala! This is a man who has been billed by the west as a human rights defender. The first name of that level of intrusion from the west is subversion and the last is money laundering both leading to prosecution. That level of impunity cannot even be tolerated by the US and the entire west. There are several cases of Ugandan nationals who were locked up in the US over similar misdemeanors and deported afterwards.

UPDF launches Tarehe sita activities in Metropolitan Kampala area

Gen. Mbadi and KCCA ED Dorothy Kisaka during the launch.

The UPDF Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi has launched Tarehe sita activities in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

While enumerating a number of interventions that will include sanitation, engineering works and medical outreaches across Kampala’s divisions, Gen. Mbadi equated UPDF to the biblical ten lepers who were given resources but only one came back to appreciate and account for what was given to him.

He added that UPDF comes back year to give back but also account.

“To celebrate this day, the UPDF has since adopted and customized the tradition of celebrating Defence Forces week and Tarehe Sita on regional rotation basis where it carries out various Civil Military Cooperation activities intended to recognize, thank and give back as a token of appreciation to the people of Uganda for their support to the UPDF by reconnecting with the masses and symbolically accounting to the population” Gen. Mbadi said.

This year’s Tarehe Sita will run under the theme; ‘Celebrating UPDF at 40; fruits of fulfilled partnership of maintaining and consolidating peoples’ security, stability and prosperity”.

According to Gen. Mbadi, the theme speaks volumes to the struggle in regard to Social – Economic Transformation of Uganda and Kampala city’s expansion from seven hills to over now 21 hills which is a manifestation of development. “Indeed Kampala Metropolitan area has experienced significant urban growth, as an industrial centre, commercial hub, an educational centre all which are vital to the countries’ social economic transformation and growth”, he added.

The choice to launch the activities of Tarehe Sita in Kampala was to recognize that the protracted peoples’ war that was launched on  Feb 6, 1981 to liberate Uganda was planned and commenced from this very city.

It is therefore important to ensure these efforts do not go in vain since UPDF has continued to build capacity and proficiency to keep the country stable and contribute to regional peace and stability.

The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban development Ms Olive Namisango Kamya who was the chief guest informed UPDF officers and men that the community is ready to participate and support UPDF in all the activities. She was proud that the activities are taking place in her own home of Lubaga Division as well and that as a former wife to a fallen comrade UPDF is always her home.

Kampala Executive Director Ms Dorothy Kisaka in her remarks to the gathering thanked UPDF for the timely intervention to address the city challenges of sanitation and waste management as a social corporate responsibility. She praised UPDF for being people centric.

She applauded UPDF for playing a role in food distribution and security during #Covid 19 crisis.

KCCA gave support of equipment and assorted items to use during activities worth Shs 15 million.

Does Major. Gen. Paul Lokech know that there was Gen. Kale Kayihura at the helm of police?

RIP Gen. Lokech

Major General Paul Lokech seem to be exited at his new assignment given the speed at which he is implementing decisions.

Just within a week after his appointment, he appeared on the screens and airwaves assuring the country of how all will be well during and after elections. But as he moves fast, does it occur to him that he is actually the Deputy Inspector General of Police whose boss is Martin Okoth Ochola?

Does he remember that just week, there was another Major General Sabiiti Muzeeyi in that very office and that his predecessor had never held a presser to communicate an event like he has.

Not yet to be outdone by the Police Spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga, Lokech issues another statement how police won’t allow journalists that haven’t been accredited by the Media Council to cover elections. How does the work of the Media Council end up being communicated by the Deputy IGP? At least it should have been Media Centre. Anyway, this is a matter before court and it should be left to court to decide.  But here is the scenario, why is Lokech who seems to be media hungry communicating the suspicious regulations? Why at the time when journalists and media lovers have been turned into boxing rings for operatives?

Ugandans have high regards for Gen. Lokech despite the allegations that he slapped a traffic officer as she carried on her duties. But as he carries out his duties he should remember that at one time, there was Gen. Kale Kayihura and by the way a four-star general heading Uganda police and the question should be where is Gen. Kayihura?

Like Gen. Lokech, Gen. Kayihura also liked the media and oftentimes he as well took over Enanga’s job.
