The Independent Electoral Commission has set a new date for nomination of mayoral aspirants for Kampala just hours after Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was arrested and blocked from accessing EC offices.
Lukwago who started driving from his home at Wakaliga with his supporters was destined for EC head office to protest the delayed nominations of mayoral aspirants in Kampala due to the proposed amendment in the law that would change the voting pertains.
However, midway he was intercepted by police who arrested him and drove him to Naggalama police post as a journalist and a politician were injured in the scuffle.
Now EC Chairman says nominations for Lord Mayor will be between November 18-20, 2015.
“Following a consultative meeting by the Minister for Kampala with Electoral Commission, held today Monday November 16, 2015, on the above matter, the EC announces resumption of the electoral process for Lord Mayor, Kampala Capital City Authority, under section 9 of the local government Act and the local government Act cap 243 (as amended) nomination of candidates for Lord Mayor will therefore be conducted from 18-20 November at the office of the returning officer Kampala, Minister’s village plot 9 Muwafu Road Ntinda Kampala starting at 9.00 am until 5.00pm” reads Eng. Badru Kiggundu’s statement.
