Kadaga opponent pressured into withdrawing petition

Must read

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga’s supporters told her opponent who had run to court asking for a vote recount over the Kamuli District Women’s seat to pull the plug.

Independent candidate Ms Deborah Mwesigwa Mugerwa, whom Ms Kadaga in the February 18th elections defeated with over 60,000 votes had appealed to Jinja high court on 4th April contesting the incumbent’s win on grounds that that she had bribed voters and also used her position as Speaker of Parliament to manipulate and influence the electorate having occupied the seat since the 1980s.

But the electorate was not impressed when they heard Ms Mweigwa was bent on fighting Busoga’s Super Woman, which resulted into numerous intimidating calls forcing her to withdraw the petition or get isolated.

‘People were calling from all over the region asking me why I was trying to fight Rebecca (Kadaga),’ Mwesigwa said. ‘Not when all my agents who shore affidavit were being persecuted threatened and intimidated.’

The withdrawal comes as relief for Ms Kadaga who is facing the biggest political battle of her life against her deputy Hon. Jacob Oulanyah for re-election as Speaker of the 10th House.
