KYAKWANZI Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has told fellow cabinet colleagues and Permanent Secretaries attending a retreat at the National Leadership Institution (NALI) in Kyankwanzi to consider paying civil servants well or else they steal government funds.
According to a source, Gen. Otafiire, who was reacting to a submission by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, said that whereas politicians are paid well, civil servants, the people who monitor most government projects, aren’t well paid. The outspoken minister further said the low pay is a temptation for the civil servants to swindle the funds.
“Civil servants should be paid well and whoever is paid well should work. Look for a way of paying them well because you (politicians) go to the same super markets,” a source at Kyakwanzi, quoting Gen Otaffiire, told EagleOnline.
The country’s top cream is attending a one-week retreat, where among other issues, they are deliberating on how the country can achieve a middle income status by 2020.
