The Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and National Guidance Frank Tumwebaze has today unveiled a seven-man team to oversee the revamping of the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr. Tumwebaze named renowned media professional Dr. Peter G Mwesige as chairman of the UBC review committee, to be assisted by Ms Peace Piwang, a human resource expert; media expert and academic Dr. Adolf Mbaine, lawyer Andrew Kibaya. Others are seasoned journalist and media practitioner Peter Okello Jabweli; public relations and communications specialist Odrek Rwabwogo and Engineer Kato Bitarabeho, an ICT expert and entrepreneur who has worked with broadcasting entities in Uganda, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Zambia.
According to the minister, the team, which is expected to carry out the task in between one and two months, will review the operations of the UBC, with the overall aim of ensuring it national broadcaster covers the whole country.
Also, the team will among other issues focus on assessing UBC’s organizational and innovative capacity; quality of content and services of all UBC channels and, benchmark ways on how government can support national broadcasters.
Mr Tumwebaze said the team will carry out its tasks in collaboration with the staff and board of the UBC.
‘UBC has a great potential to shine both within the country and on the airwaves worldwide. It is my intention therefore to have a strong and well managed national broadcaster able to cover the whole country, fully close the gap left by the private players and help tell a true story about Uganda’s rich heritage,’ Mr. Tumwebaze wrote.
Started in 1963, the UBC was previously under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
