Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced Apollo Senkeeto to 10 years jail after being convicted of obtaining execution performance bond of Shs16.5 billion from Insurance Company of East Africa and UAP by guaranteeing them a pending payment for the Mukono-Katosi road.
Apollo Senkeeto is one of the six suspects who were arrested in July 2015 and charged with 24 offences of fraud, corruption, abuse of office and influence peddling and yesterday appearing before Justice Lawrence Gidudu, Joe Ssemugooma, the former head of finance at Uganda National Roads Authority and Wilberforce Ssenjakko were found guilty of theft.
However, on grounds of not causing financial loss when the Inspector General of Government (IGG) stopped the contract, Justice Gidudu acquitted former Works Minister Abraham Byandala, former URA’s lawyer Marvin Byaruha and former UNRA Acting Executive Director Eng. Benurado Kimeze Ssebugga of all charges that were leveled against them.
Appearing for their sentencing, Senkeeto was handed to 10 years jail and five years to each of two former UNRA staff, Joe Ssemugooma and Wilberforce Ssenjakko.
Prosecution maintains that Senkeeto obtained execution of performance bond of Sh16.5 billion from Insurance Company of East Africa and UAP by guaranteeing them a pending payment for the road. It also alleges that UNRA officials led to the loss of Sh24.7 billion when they effected payment to Eutaw without establishing its authenticity.
