Denis Onyango signs new contract with Mamelodi Sundowns

Must read

Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Masinde Onyango has today signed a new four-and-a-half year contract extension with South African Premier Soccer League side Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper joined Sundowns in 2011 and with the contract extension, he will have spent more than decade at the Tshwane-based team.

A statement from Sundowns read: ‘Mamelodi Sundowns and Denis Onyango agreed on a contract extension of four and a half years. The Ugandan goalkeeper is currently the best goalkeeper in Africa having been named in the Confederation of African Football’s Best XI.

Onyango was the only African based player in the star-studded XI.

This contract extension means that Onyango will spend more than a decade at Sundowns. Onyango joined the Brazilians in 2011.

During that time he worked his way up to become the club’s undisputed No. 1, winning three league titles and the CAF Champions League title in 2016 as well as the CAF Super Cup the following year.’

The Uganda Cranes captain is hoping to add more medals this season as his side are in the PSL title race and are still involved in the Caf Champions League.

Masandawana are currently third with 36 points with two games in hand.

The Brazilians are next in action on Wednesday when they host Cape Town City in a PSL clash where a victory for the men in yellow could take them to the summit of the table.
