CAF increases 2019 Afcon prize money

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made public the amount of money to be received by teams in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Egypt.

The prize money to be shared between the teams participating in the Africa Cup of Nations has been increased from the previous tournament.

All the 24 participating teams at the competition will in the start pocket home at least US$260,000 to help in preparations for the final tournament.

The winner of the 2019 AFCON trophy will take home US$4.5 million (approximately Ug shs 16.9Bn) in addition to the trophy they will win on July 19, the grand finale day.

Runners-up will pocket US$2.5 million, semifinalists US$2.0 million and US$800,000 for the quarterfinalists.

US$ 475,000 will be for the teams that will be eliminated at the group stage.

All the countries competing at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt will receive at least $600,000 each.

Last edition’s winner and defending champions, Cameroon got $4 million for winning the 2017 AFCON. Runners up, Egypt received $2 million, while Burkina Faso and Ghana, the two semifinalists, went home with $1.5 million each.

This year’s Afcon will be the 32nd edition of the international men’s football championship of Africa and will be hosted from 21st June with the final to be played on 19th July 2019.

Uganda was drawn in group A alongside hosts Egypt, Congo DR and Zimbabwe.
