Queries have been raised after some companies allied to powerful individuals have been allowed to export labour while others are restricted by officials at the Ministry of labour especially the Director Labour Martin Wandera.
Exportation of labor was suspended by the government as a means to curb the spread of #Covid-19. However, sources say that some companies linked to powerful individuals who continue operating under ‘black market’.
Exportation of labor is a highly lucrative trade with companies minting millions of shillings from exporting workers to the Middle East.
According to Baker Akantabira, the chairperson of Uganda Association of External Recruitment Agencies (UAERA), the prolonged suspension of labour export has increased human trafficking in the country since over 150 people have been intercepted at the airport.
“The slight delay of reopening for externalization of domestic workers is because, government would like to put in place additional measures aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of domestic workers abroad,” Labour Ministry revealed in a statement.
