Kampala International University (KIU) has been cleared by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to offer lectures to its students online as one of the safety measures to safeguard against the spread of COVID-19 within the country.
KIU, which rolled out its e-learning platform for its students across all programmes at the beginning of the national lockdown, was officially cleared by NCHE to offer online studies after the reopening of schools for candidate classes and gradual lifting of the lockdown.
In an official communication on its website, NCHE spelt out the need for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to adopt the Open Distance and e-learning (ODeL) system to reduce the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The NCHE takes cognizance of the readiness to reopen expressed by the majority of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and has developed guidelines for aiding HEIs to resume their teaching and learning activities remotely, since students and lecturers can be able to interact without necessarily coming into contact, during the lockdown,” reads the communication.
Godfrey Lukumu, the e-learning administrator at KIU Western Campus said he has been carrying out training sessions for students and staff since the university reopened to finalists so that they can use the ODeL system effectively.
“I have been carrying out training in the Biomedical block for students and staff so that they can be conversant with the e-learning system,” Lukumu said.
