The Apostolic Administrator for Kampala Archdiocese Rt. Rev. Paul Ssemwogerere has called for thorough investigations into the assassination attempt on the former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Katumba Wamala.

Bishop Ssemwogerere made the clarion call during the celebrations to mark the martyrdom of Christian converts at Namugongo Catholic Shrine. The Uganda Martyrs are a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom who were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887. They were killed on orders of Mwanga II, the Kabaka (King) of Buganda

Gen Katumba was on Tuesday shot at by unknown gunmen who were riding on motor bikes along Kisota road in Kisaasi. The incident left both his daughter Brenda Nantongo Wamala and his driver Kayondo Haruna dead.

“We pray for Gen Katumba Wamala that God strengthens him. We also pray for his driver’s family. An attack on human life is an attack on God.”

“We urge the people in charge of security to investigate the cases of murder and put a stop to them. We pray that we all work towards the fraternity of our country through thriving for justice and peace,” Bishop Semwogerere said.

During the celebrations, Bishop Ssemwogerere urged believers to have faith amidst all the challenges they are going through just as the Uganda Martyrs did.

“We thank the Late Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga for the good work at this Catholic Church. We pray for all people we have lost during this period,” he said.

He urged Ugandans to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of washing hands, social distance, and wearing face masks noting that this Covid-19 disease is real and deadly. “Let us be vigilant and do what is expected of us,” he added.
